Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
I had similar issues until I configured my router to Nat Type 2.
Here is a link to post on the playstation boards that helped me fix it:

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
Just out of curiosity, do you know what speed his router is? When I first got my PS3, I was still using an 802.11b router and had some serious connection issues (also speed issues, obviously). Upgrading to an 802.11g solved all my problems. I also went from WEP encryption to WPA2. Not sure which of those 2 changes fixed it, but I haven't had any problems since. Just thought I'd throw that out there as well.

I run my PS3 on an 802.11b router using WEP encryption and have zero issues personally.

That sucks, chess. How did you know it was coming? All I remember is you were convinced after your friend's failed. Anything else?
I'd hate it if mine died. It wouldn't kill me financially to buy a new unit, but that BC is such a nice feature even though I rarely play PS2 games on it.

Sorry for your loss Chess. Will you at least be able to recover your save files when repaired? I know that's been a flaw of the ps3 in the past. Has Sony fixed the problem via Firmware?

Is the yellow light due to the harddrive dying or some other factor?

I just ordered a slim on Amazon, and I'll hang on to the 60GB to see if there's movement on the "Sony admitting it's a problem" front.
Meanwhile, my Wii migrated back into the living room.

That said, I'm not too worried about it. Worst case, it messes up a couple of trophy hunts (the cumulative type).

So how much is the repair job? And can they guarantee that you'll get your own 60 GB back if you send it in?

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
I'm considering my ACTUAL utilization of backwards compatibility, and it's a marginal loss at worst. It's nice to know it's there, but as a practical matter, I never use it. Heck, if I sent it in, I'd probably be happy with a refurb slim.

Just barely cheaper when you consider a new slim comes with an extra controller ($40), a bigger hard-drive, uses less electricity, runs cooler (so might last longer), and is NEW. My instinct is that the controller and the electricity alone will make up the difference over the life of the unit.
My plan is to hang on to my 60GB in the hopes of a class action suit pressuring Sony to man-up like Microsoft did. Alternatively, I might let the not-wife send it in for repair/slim so she can watch Blu-Rays in the bedroom.
Again I ask, what is the cause of the yellow light?

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
Luckily, I have MOST of my important game saves backed up...just missing the ones from the holidays.
Saves I have (or at least the ones that require "unlocking" of content):
Rock Band
Burnout Paradise
LBP
GTA IV
Lego Games
Bioshock
Saves I'll lose:
Uncharted 2 (don't mind doing that one again
)
Batman (ditto)
Infamous (this one hurts a bit...349 shards)
God of War Collection (maybe a third of the way into the first game)
Beatles Rock Band (needed an excuse to play through again)
Williams Pinball Collection (should take an evening to unlock all of the tables)
Fallout 3 GOTY (my game was 100%, so I would have started fresh anyway)
The really painful thing will be redownloading all of my PSN content and game updates. Probably the first games I put in will be Warhawk, Burnout Paradise and LBP...just to get massive updates out of the way.

So if you have a full backup, can't you just restore it to the new PS3? Chess, in your case I'm assuming you haven't taken one in a bit based on which saves you'll lose.
I did one not too long ago when I swapped my 60GB HD out for a 250GB. I supposed it would too easy for me to pop my 250GB into a new PS3 and just have it work.
Now I get to wait and see when my fails I guess.

Locked game saves won't restore to a new system, unfortunately. The newest firmware will allow you to transfer everything to a new system, but your old system has to be working. This has been discussed on here hundreds of times, and I guess Sony is never going to change it.
It's up to the developlers as to whether the game saves are locked, but I wish Sony could somehow make it so they are locked to your profile and not the system. That way, you could move it whenever you wanted, and backing up your saves actually did some good.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
I sent my 60gb back a few weeks ago. They wanted $180 for a repair, or $150 for a new slim. I would received a refurb 602gb not my system, so I was going to loose my data anyway.

It may be easier to swallow if you just do it on demand, rather than trying to get everything right back the way it was ASAP. Don't download the games/updates until you feel like playing them again. I got my replacement system about four months ago, and I haven't bothered to download more than half of it because I haven't played some of the games since then.

Godspeed if you own PAIN and have to redownload all those updates. Might take you three weeks to get them all installed.

I'm gonna call them today and (hopefully) get a slim for the bedroom!
