Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Everything is based around an open world concept. Instead of having a user-friendly menu where you simply choose what race you want to do, you drive to an intersection and spin your wheels. And if you haven't raced there before you won't even know what sort of race/challenge you're going to get until you actually go there.
And how about car customization? In a normal game you have a menu driven "Garage" where you pick out your car, choose the color, and off you go! Burnout: Paradise is a little different. First, you drive to a "junkyard" to get your car. Then you have to find a paint shop to paint it. Want to choose a color? Nope, sorry. It's random! Want to fix your car? You have to find a ANOTHER location (a garage for that). Want to refill your boost? Yet another location for that!
Basically, there's a lot of unnecessary driving around when a simple menu system would be better. If you've played Fable 3, it's the same idea of taking easy menus and turning them into a tedious "experience".
The races are inside the open world, and nothing is blocked off. So instead of just being able to enjoy the race, look for shortcuts, etc you have to also navigate to the finish line. Not nearly as fun as the races in the previous installments...quite aggravating, in fact.
Also, they got rid of crash mode for some reason. That was my favorite part of Burnout 3. Instead you can try to do damage at random intersections and beat the record...not nearly as fun as the carefully constructed Crash levels they used to have. Looks like that will be corrected in the upcoming "Lobster Monster" game.
The actual driving and crash mechanics are still fun, and look great in HD. It's the wrapper around everything that I hate.

I never played a Burnout game before Paradise, but this articulates my feelings perfectly. I was suckered by the good reviews, but I got tired of playing it pretty quickly for all of the above reasons. Give me arcade racing with simple menu selection and closed-form tracks any day.
BTW - I played the crap out of San Francisco Rush 2049 when I worked at a Movie Theatre in high school. It was such a good game.

I was actually the opposite. I had played Burnout 3 and wasn't impressed, yet I loved Burnout Paradise.

I've put in about 80 hours into Burnout Paradise and I need to make a few corrections.
First the intersections all have icons so you'll know what kind of race it is. Second, car customizations are all done in the Junkyard where you can even pick the paint color. Fix your car? That's only during Marked Man or Road Rage where the car has a limited amount of damage it can take before the event ends.
The goal of Burnout Paradise was to be more about exploration. Half the fun of the game is going online with friends to find new locations you haven't yet discovered and keep messing around with different events.

I understand the goal and can even see why some people might really enjoy that, but it simply was not for me. I have a very limited amount of time for gaming so I have to make the most of it. Spending time learning the map so that I could navigate the city intelligently and take the correct route in races was just not rating on my fun meter.

There's fun to be had in the exploration mode, but I don't want to do it all the time. I think a good compromise would have been to have a "Quick Navigation" mode for traditional Burnout players.

I recall everyone complaining about Paradise initially. It's definitely a game that grows on you. Plus the changes made to the game certainly made it better. There's no way you won't get your $8 worth from this game. Give it some more time.
We should organize another online meet-up for the game. I think the last one was pretty well attended.

Thanks for the Heads-up. Looks like I'll be burning my $20 Infamous 2 Kmart gaming coupon on a PSN card!
In for : BTTF, Swarm, PJ Shooter 2 and maybe Dead Space Extraction and Tales From Space : About A Blob.
Seriously, they just had Shank on sale for $5 for a full month, ending July 5th. Do they really need to put it back on sale a week later?
BTW : Both Shank and Swarm are 1200 point games ($15) on XBLA, making these deals even better.

Definitely in for Tales from Space : About a Blob, I remember trying the demo out and enjoying it. I will probably get BttF, PixelJunk Shooter 2, and Swarm (that's the one with the little blue lemming-like dudes, right?) also.

Capcom Readying Resident Evil 15th Anniversary Box
Lots of Resident Evil in one box.
Posted on 07.08.2011 at 16:05, by Anoop Gantayat
Capcom has quite the bundle on the way for Resident Evil's 15th anniversary. Set for release exclusively through e-Capcom is the Resident Evil 15th Anniversary Box. This includes the following:
Resident Evil Directors Cut (PSX)
Resident Evil 2 (PSX)
Resident Evil 3 Last Escape (PSX)
Resident Evil Revival Selection (PS3)
Resident Evil Code: Veronica soundtrack
Resident Evil 4 soundtrack
15th anniversary items: Pins & Stickers (STARS & Umbrella)
Spacer for PS3's Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition
Revival Selection is the upcoming PS3 release that includes HD versions of Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 4. This means that you're basically getting all the past main RE games, except for RE5. The "spacer" mentioned above is meant to be replaced with your copy of RE5 or Gold Edition so you can complete the set.
The soundtrack CDs are the same as the bonus CDs that were included with PS2's Resident Evil Code: Veronica Resident Evil 4 Value Pack.
The Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 games are the original games on PlayStation executable discs. The discs themselves have a special design just for the package.
All this Resident Evil can be yours for ¥7,800. The bundle will be released on September 8. It's an exclusive e-Capcom item, so visit the e-Capcom listing for ordering instructions.

So, install times are taking about 10 times as long, so it's not a fair trade off. Been waiting for Beyond Good & Evil demo to install for over 10 minutes, and it's only at 40 percent.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Guys just a question.
I was B-Specing a 4-hour endurance race on Gran Turismo 5 to level up and about 2 hours into the race I turned the TV on and the screen was breaking up like crazy, for about 5 minutes. It's happened about 2-3 times as I've done that event a few times (since it's happened a few times *I* don't think there's anything to worry about). Then just earlier I had finished downloading/installing some DLC off of the PS Store and as I'm backing out onto the XMB, the whole screen freezes. So when that happens you hit restart on the console (never pull the plug out), I see the restart light start flashing but the PS Store screen is still on the TV, until it decides to totally restart like it normally does. Maybe I backed out too quickly as that little clock icon on the top right hand corner was doing something.
Is there anything to worry about? I'm not thinking YLOD as the PS3 hasn't completely turned off, it's only frozen which doesn't indicate YLOD. NBA 2K11 has frozen trying to back out of the MY Player menu, which heaps of people have complained about. This is the first time the PS Store has frozen on me and I really cant explain the GT5 one. Has anyone had that happen to them?
And yes, my console is in a well ventilated area and is a slim console. Admittedly, the past 3-4 days I've probably used it for 6+ hours on those days, but a $500 console should be built to last. I don't want to be scared into not playing my console as much as I want to.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
My PS3 froze while playing Uncharted 3 Beta last night. Rebooted, got back into UC3 but the game froze up and then the PS3 forced a restart. After that, it wouldn't load the XMB, just sat stuck on the flowy wavy images. Looked up online, did a "File System Restore" which seemed to take a long time and the system started making some really weird noises. 8 hours later, it's no longer advancing.
Powered down. Powered up. It's the hard drive making thoise weird beeping and scratching noises and then it says can't find the HD.
I'm fine replacing a hard drive, but does anyone know how to get data off the drive? Like my save games? Anyone done that before?
I was 20 hours into Red Dead and almost done.

Did you by any chance upload your game saves to the cloud while on Playstation Plus? If so, you can re-download them onto another HDD. Otherwise, you're probably screwed.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I still have my old PS3 which I haven't used in 8 months that has a bunch of old saves on it. But from those 8 months I've lost:
Red Dead Redemption
Dragon Age 2
Sly Cooper 1, 2, 3
Enslaved
inFAMOUS 2
LA Noire
Rock Band 3
LittleBigPlanet 2
Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time
Dragon Age Origins DLC
LEGO Rock Band
Probably more.
My biggest concerns are the Dragon Ages (that's over 100 hours of gaming) and then Red Dead (which I've put 20 hours so far) since I had just gotten to Blackwater and was so close to being done with the game. Also R&C because I wanted to go through on the Challenge mode.

Ok. Maybe some good news.
I decided to plug my PS3 into the wall directly and now at least the hard drive isn't making those noises anymore. The screen comes up saying my hard drive is corrupted and it will restore it.
Hopefully this takes and it works. Maybe my surge protector is going bad or something.
