Can't believe their servers are still down. But at least they're fixing the issues.

Now if only they came up with a solution for their constant updates that seem to take my PS3 4 hours (on most occasions) to download before I can watch Netflix on the damned thing.
your internet must blow, system updates don't take long at all for me, maybe like 15 minutes for the longest one I've ever had to install. I agree though it's still annoying.

Actually it's blazing fast on the 360, web surfing, streaming, downloading, etc; but for some reason the PSN is always a drag (every once in a while it perks up, rare though). Both wifi and wired.

There's no question that PSN is slower than Live. Neither service displays bandwidth rates, but I know it in my gut. Switching from wifi to wired helped a lot, though.

I haven't measured it, but it seems like when I am downloading big files (> 1 GB), Xbox is faster than any other service or site save really well seeded torrents.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Encryption? We don't need no stinkin' encryption.

In an update on the PlayStation Blog, Sony's Patrick Seybold passes along the bad news that service renewal has been delayed to an unspecified time. "When we held the press conference in Japan last week," Seybold said, "based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system." He didn't flat out say this week is out of the question, but that's definitely the implication.

Seybold apologized for the delay. To those of us (all of us) waiting to get back to our online services, he said "trust me when I say we're doing everything we can to make it happen."

I'd say that news actually warrants this:

At least Microsoft and Apple tell consumers "we are working on it" instead of "your shit will be done in a week or two."

Taking bets now on which will happen first:

1) PSN full service restoration

2) Duke Nukem Forever released

Probably Duke Nukem, but lets be honest. At this point we almost should have a third choice

3) Starcraft Ghost released

/sigh

Is anyone else now unable to watch Netflix on their PS3? I was using it earlier this morning, but when I turned it back on, I now had to re-enter my netflix account info. After doing that the account loads up but when I try watching something it says that "PSN is undergoing maintenance" and after pressing circle another box pops-up saying "There was a problem communication with the Playstation Network. Please try again Later." I click ok, it takes me back to my Queue. WTF

A few of my friends are having the same issues as me. I took a quick video to show you what happens when I try to load a video.

I have been having problems watching Netflix the past few weeks. I'm tempted to ask for a refund but I know they'll come back with the "You can use it on your PC bit". However, I didn't sign up for Netflix to watch movies on my laptop so that should me a moot point.

What's so annoying is that Sony keeps promising that it will be up within a certain timeframe and then not delivering. They would be much better off telling us a longer timeframe, one that they didn't expect. The best thing about that is if they tell us, "three weeks" and it's ready in two, everybody would be happy that they got it out a week "early". I'm just a little taken back at how completely incompetent the people running Sony are. Mind blowing, really.

Well at least now the ps+ members will get the free month in addition to downtime credit. So 2+ months credit for ps+ members at least.

I'm also pissed at Sony, but am willing to take them at their word : they expected to be back up by the end of this week, then found out about another breach and had to revise their system even further. At this point I just want everything fixed up right this time. An extra few days or even weeks are okay in my book if they're really devoted to fixing things properly -- I don't think they're just pulling dates out of their ass.

BTW : They really aren't throwing out all sorts of dates. At first they said "as soon as possible", then they gave the timeframe of "the end of next week", before the current apology. Maybe it's because I just finished a 10-month house remodel that went through three different contractors and probably a hundred different completion dates, but to me these few date revisions aren't unreasonable given the circumstances.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Encryption? We don't need no stinkin' encryption.

Does anyone really think that it'll be secure once it comes back up? They've pissed off a group of people with nothing better to do. Even if there was no animosity, I would not be surprised to see it be a challenge to bring it down again.

Every time any company puts out new firmware that patches old holes, be it Sony or Nintendo or Apple, it's only a matter of hours or days before it's hacked again. Those are usually on the client-end, though, where it doesn't affect everyone.

Doesn't matter how long PSN is down or how vigilant they are in plugging the holes, they won't get them all and it'll happen again.

I expect it'll be considerably more secure. Airliners aren't hijack-proof today, but they're a lot safer than they were on 9/10/01.

It's just a matter of time. Hijackers can't bend the rules of physics like hackers can bend the rules of code. Hacking isn't a suicide mission. Hacking happens much faster than hijacking, with many more attempts.

Yes, it'll be more secure (not that that's saying much now, is it?). All I'm saying is that as soon as it goes up, it's prime target for attack again. If for no other reason than "Hey, look, we can still do it".

Honestly with sony having the DOHS and the FBI helping them track these guys they would have to be pretty fucking stupid to try again, especially any time soon when the fbi may be still monitoring the network.

I agree with you that I want them to take as much time as possible to get it done right. However, one of the biggest criticisms of Sony is how poorly they have handled this situation by letting their customers know what is going on. On that we disagree, I don't take them at their word at all.

No doubt. But cockiness is a helluva drug. I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised.
