Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
Its a percentage of the HD, its the same for every HD. It just seems like you lose more space with a larger drive.

And thank you for your help. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
The 465/500 is due to the different ways of counting the space. The drive should be 500 billion bytes, but computers report space in increments of 1024 rather than 1000. There may also be some OS overhead.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
I think I understand. So the 465 is due to the measurement in 1024 increments and the missing 50 was taken by the operating system? Thus I was left with 415?

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
Basically no hard drive you buy is going to have exactly what it says on the box. It will always have less. My 500gb in my computer only reports 461. Pretty close to what you are getting. My 160 gig external shows 149

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
Just curious....I have a 60GB and I sometimes back it up to my external HDD. Let's say it does kick the bucket one day, can I import my 60GB onto a slim or is there a different filesystem or something? Just curious.

I'm actually pretty convinced that backing up your GAME SAVES is more important than a system restore if you have a 60GB and are being offerred a new slim in exchange. I also recommend getting in the habit of removing game disks when you turn your 60GB off, as it doesn't do the "fan check/disk recover trick" that the 40GB and 80GB do. So if your system dies, your game is stuck, unless you're pretty confident about dismantling the BRD to get to it. I wasn't confident, but I did it anyway. |

My movie jukebox on my PS3 is probably the coolest thing I've done with it this year. |

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
Actually my understanding is that the system backup utility on the PS3 will backup all of your data, including game saves, but copy protected saves (Rock Band, etc.) can only be restored to the same system. So backing up the copy protected saves is really only good for changing hard drives in the same system. There is no way to move a copy protected save to another system unless both systems are operable and hooked together via lan.

I used that and MKV2VOB (for transfer to hdd) for a while but got sick of burning everything to disc. :D Thankfully better, reasonably priced hardware solutions became available.

Unfortunately, no...or at least I don't think so. The backup just restores all of your settings and whatnot.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
Anyone else having problems w/ the Netflix disc? It worked a couple of days ago but I've tried it several times this morning and keep getting a playback error (800xxx - don't recall the exact number).

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
I had this problem a couple of times. My kids had actually managed to scratch the disc somehow. Ordered a replacement disc and I was good to go. You can also delete the info for it, (it's where the movie Blu-ray disc files end up) and start over from the activation again.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
Finally got my PS3 exchange from Sony. I have what appears to a new slim, but no box or controller. I just got the system, power cord and manual. It took a few hours to re download DLC from PSN. I didn't bother with demos, videos, etc. My initial impressions are that its quieter than my 60 gb. I should have more time to check it out over the weekend.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
That's kind of crappy that you lose out on BC because of this, sure you have more hard drive space but they should have sent you the 250 in place of a 60 at least. I assume they sent you a 120.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
So games do you guys plan the buy/rent/pass on the next two months? It is ridiculously loaded...
Feb: WKC, Bioshock 2, Dante's Inferno, Star Ocean, Heavy Rain, Last Rebellion March: Bad Company 2, MLB 10 The Show, Final Fantasy 13, Yakuza 3, God of War 3 Jesus... Definite must-buys are this point are White Knight Chronicles, Heavy Rain, MLB 10 The Show, FF13, Yakuza 3, and GoW3. I'll probably Gamefly the rest. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
Just Bioshock 2, Heavy Rain, and God of War 3 for me.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
Heavy Rain is probably the only thing I'll get and play in February, and then when MLB hits that's probably all I'll play for a while.
I still haven't finished BioShock or GOW 1&2 so I'll wait on getting those sequels. I'll pass on Battlefield - didn't like the first one that much. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken
Bioshock 2 and God of War III are the only definite purchases for me at this point. I still haven't even started playing Borderlands though, so I figure I'll finish Bioshock 2 and then play Borderlands until GOW hits.
