so you are saying when you play the single player campaign, the load times (between chapters or first boot up) are slower and that is it? i won't see slow down or framerate issues during gameplay?

Longer load times. That's it. Enjoy.

Load times will be slower, period. The difference between multi player and single player is that during single player... you are waiting, and quite frankly nobody else cares. During multi player, the rest of us are waiting, and well, we do care.

Try it and see what it does, but the bottom line is that you will not have the optimized experience running it from the hard drive.

Is there any other option for transferring saves and stuff from one hard drive to another besides the memory card? I can't find them anywhere.

There's the transfer cable. Is that what you're asking about? They used to hand them out for free, but now I think they charge for them.

Edit: I misunderstood. I didn't realize you meant transferring back and forth. Just thought you meant a one-time transfer.

if i delete a game i played from hard drive that was transferred from disc, do i lose my game saves if i go back to playing from disc?

No. Does that even make sense to you? On most computers you can delete files individually from a folder without deleting the whole folder, right?

I heard about that, but when is the spring update?

Nobody knows for sure, but our best guess is sometime between yesterday and June 21st.

Of course, the spring update may become the fall update too. Wouldn't be unprecedented.

with your analogy, i take it as the folder is the actual disc and the individual file is the save game. if i delete the individual file/save game then yes, i would lose if i went back and played from disc itself.

i really am just confused about how the whole install thing works. i guess since you put it that way it makes sense- you play the actual disc and saved game must get stored on hard drive, but when completely install and play from hard drive didn't know if stored in same place as just an individual game played from disc.

pinata242 03-21-10 01:28 AM

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

You can't write save games to the disc so in no way does my analogy imply that.

When you "install" the game to the hard drive, it's merely creating a soft copy (image) of that disc. That's a file that resides on the hard drive. The hard drive is grouped by content (folder). Save games, DLC, and disc images all go in the same logical folder on the hard drive. Deleting the image has no effect on the other files in that folder. Playing from the disc or the image is seamless to the system and you, the user.

They're two completely separate items on the hard-drive, and can be kept or deleted separately.

Yeah scott1598,

I keep Lost Planet, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Bayonetta, and 2 or 3 other "currently being played games" on my 120G HD at all times. When I'm done with a game I simply delete it and all the saves, cheevos, and downloads remain on the drive. And they'll stay there for as long as you keep them there.

Scott don't read. No need to worry you or confuse you.

Spoiler:

All that being said, if you go into the memory tab on the dashboard, navigate down to a game, and choose delete all. Doesn't it then delete the save game? I know it gets rid of all the DLC, updates, game files etc. but I have never went back to see if the save file was gone. I thought i did something like that with Oblivion when i was done because the saves alone were multiple gigs and were killing me when i had a 20 gig HDD.

Playing Mass Effect 2 the other night (thank god it was the second playthrough) and my Xbox started locking up with a checkerboard pattern. Couldn't get more than a minute or so into any game. I rebooted it several times, left it over night, and then popped the HD off and started it up, then put the drive back on and started it...RROD.

My second one so I suppose I'm luckier than most. I'm still rocking my original 20G drive which hasn't been a big issue but I gave serious thought to buying an elite and selling my refurbed Premium. Just to have a newer console.

Already packed it up to send away for repair. I guess I was due. :(

I had my launch console go RROD on me a few years ago. It's like you know it when it happens. Repeated freezing, checkered boxes, etc.

I hold my breath everytime my Pro system has a freeze

It was made in 2008 though, so I am not sure it's prone to doing the red ring dance.

As I sit here waiting for my 4th 360 to arrive from MS, and as much as I love the 360, I have to admit that I think it's better to assume it will at some point. People say they've reduced the amount of RROD's, but it's still an issue. If anything, and this is just my personal opinion, I think they're simply figured out a way for consoles to last longer before it happens.

So, I just got ODST and hopped online to play but it won't connect saying information could not be retrieved from the halo 3 server. Anybody had this happen? Halo 3 works just fine for me.

You do need to be careful sometimes (perhaps always), the game install and the save file are kept in the same game folder under the Memory section. While it's certainly possible to delete the game install without deleting the game save, if you're not careful you could accidently delete the entire folder including the saves. I know it happened to someone in this thread. Just make sure you don't delete the entire folder and you'll be fine though.

Do all new consoles have a three year warranty for the RROD or just the earlier ones?
