From what I read on DBSTalk, DirecTV's reason for not allowing it is that they're totally revamping their On Demand offerings...supposedly it will be pretty close to what HBO Go offers, but via your DirecTV receiver.

It's not really up to DirecTV to offer everything HBO directly does, is it? No. HBOGo will always be > any cable/sat/third-party provider's "on demand".

That UFC app was pretty slick. It was a lot of fun to watch the fights and see how my Friends predicted them. I have almost zero familiarity with the fighters so I didn't vote, but the experience was cool and if a bunch of online Friends watched it at the same time in a Party, I bet that would be a lot of fun.

Not sure what you're getting at. I'd prefer DirecTV to allow their subscribers to access HBOGo via Roku, 360, and whatever else. Sounds like they aren't going to. So at least they're going to make their (now very shitty) On Demand offerings MUCH better.

I'm saying that while it would be nice for cable/sat providers to not block those sort of offerings by HBOGo, etc on other devices (Roku, 360, and whatever else), they don't have to. They think you should be using their bought/rented/monitored devices. They don't see the need for you to have access to that stuff on your TV when you should have it already subscribed and coming in on your tv through their boxes.

With me so far?

There are reasons the HBOGo iOS app (as well as the TBS and other such) explicitly override core functionality of the device and prevent you from pushing it from the iPad/iPhone to an AirPlay point, like the AppleTV to watch it on your TV. Cable/sat providers don't want HBO allowing you to watch it on the big screen outside of their own devices.

So, to offset that, they need to work with HBO to expand the "On Demand" offerings, but HBO doesn't necessarily need to let them have as expansive of a library as their own HBOGo offers. It's a game between the providers and we lose.

Imagine if HBO could offer Go subscriptions without needing a cable/sat provider? I'd buy in. That's going a long way to "a la carte" that cable/sat is reluctant to do. They're a dinosaur and this sort of restriction is evidence that they're scared of the internet.

Well sure, I figured it kind of went without saying that it'd be nice if the cable/satellite providers wouldn't be able to tell HBO who and where they can offer their content. It sucks. But it's what we have to deal with.

I am getting a 2nd 360 for the kids for Christmas and want them to be able to play the XBLA games I have on my console. I was excited about the HBOGo app coming to the 360 so that I could watch some of the movies and back catalogue from HBO streaming on my TV in widescreen and not on my 20 inch PC monitor or on my Android phone and not downloaded to my DVR hard drive eating up valuable space.

But, whatever, if Directv won't authorize it, I'll deal with it.

It's never going to happen. HBO's President said yesterday in a story I read that they are never going to allow their content to be available ala carte. You have to be a subscriber or buy the DVDs and Blu-Rays.

Crap, I'm using my parents account which is through Comcast. It works on my android phone. Makes no sense that Comcast lets it run on Android but not Roku.

So should we be anticipating that Comcast won't particpate with Xbox either?

HBOGo via Comcast also works on the iPad. They seem to like mobile devices, but hate set-top boxes.

I don't know. I'm really hoping it'll work, but haven't seen anything to confirm or deny it. On the positive side, the Xfinity app seems to include most (maybe all) of the HBOGo content.

I just logged on and still no update yet. I checked Major Nelson's Twitter feed as of 2 hours ago and he says they are still working on getting the update out.

I believe yes. Epix is one of the channels that is coming and on the Roku box you have to be a subscriber to the service.


Major Nelson just tweeted that the update should be rolling out in the next few hours.
