Why 360 HDDs Are So Ridiculously Expensive?
- The HDD ships not only with pre-installed software (demos and/or XBLA games), but part of the console's OS itself. This = increased costs.
- The HDD must be coloured and shaped to fit inside the specially-designed housing that ensures only your 360 can use the unit. That's more extra expenditure. This is done by a "Value Added Reseller", who also take care of the HDD's retail packaging.
- Microsoft have at this point paid an estimated $100 (iSuppli can only go estimates, though as specialists in this stuff their numbers won't be far off), and then split the remaining $80 profit with retailers and distributors (a 120GB HDD retails for $180).

I call BS on part one. It does have some software installed on it for BC, but that can't possibly affect the cost to Microsoft more than a few cents.

That's a BS report.

Obviously there are extra costs when compared to a barebones hard drive, but 1) the costs are fixed, irrelevant to the size of the drive 2) the costs are a couple bucks, not $100+. MS could easily sell 1TB drives for the 360 for $100 MSRP and still turn a profit on each one.

360 HDDs are so expensive because Microsoft has the ability to exclude non-Microsoft HDDs, which means they have a monopoly, which means they can charge what they want to charge. Sure, you're paying something for the pre-loaded software and the plastic housing that snaps onto the side of your 360, but that's not what's driving the prices.

While the price is pretty bad in comparison to a regular hard drive you can buy for your computer off the shelf, it's not really anything new. Paying $30 for an 8MB memory card wasn't exactly a bargain either.

Yeah, if Sony can do it, and not have any issues, Microsoft should be able to do it. I mean, with the PS3 if you use your own hard drive piracy is not easier, there are not more issues with the system failing, games play the same, etc.

Although since 1999, when I started playing videogames again, I've never had a console die or fail on me. Not the PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Gamecube, Wii... maybe I'm that lucky.

Oddly enough, I'm scared to touch my Turbo Duo because I'm certain that a cd player can't actually last that long. My 360 has red ringed twice (on #3), and I did have a PS2 (old style) flip out on me but I blame that on myself. Outside of that though, it's been many many years since the NES days when I went through a rash of those.

People are always claiming the hard drives 'come with the OS installed' but this is the easiest one to debunk. The 360 runs just fine with no hard drive attached--The OS is internal, not on the drive.

Master Chief and Stormtrooper go on a date. You have to be open minded. I think. Or is he a she?
I want a Master Chief costume.

Fuck. My 360 locked up a bunch of times this morning. Once during a game, twice during the boot screen, and once while navigating the LIVE menus.
I guess the Red Ring Stork is on his way. I'll keep telling myself that 3 years is a decent life for a 360.
EDIT: Not a red ring but the lower right quadrant went red once and from what I understand this is a hardware failure.

Well my 2nd 360 just RRODed in the middle of a Lego Rock Band session. And of course the repair section of the Xbox site is down. I'm getting pissed.

Can anyone access the "My Information" link in the repair section of the Xbox site?

The official line is that the RROD warranty is three years from date of purchase, but they can be talked into repairing it after that. And they should.
While I love the xBox, it isn't exactly what you would call "quality" hardware.
EDIT: If you got your xBox on 9/27/07 as it states in your sig, you should have no problem getting it fixed by Microsoft.

Yeah, we'll see. It may or may not be the console. I'm at their "help with red lights" site and my 360 has given me 1 red light in the lower right quadrant and also 3 red lights. All the "solutions" point towards the power supply. I'm hoping it's just the power supply instead of the console.
But get this...
It has also given me error codes 71 and 79. Supposedly both codes deal with problems with the Dashboard and Hard Drive issues. On the same day all this started I did buy "Blacksite Area 51" which is an older game so I had to take an update with I first played it after I installed it to my Hard Drive.

My coffin shipped this morning from Microsoft. Glad they're still sending out boxes, not glad that they're still sending out boxes...
