But look at something like DJ Hero or Band hero, compared to the earlier games in the platform for a better analogy.

Wii Balance Board?

That's a better analogy. But that came with a must-have app (fitness through gaming!) and was at the right price-point. But then, how many of the millions that bought one still use it? I guess it all depends on the kind of game that's bundled with Natal.

That price (if correct - I still doubt it) will be the kiss of death. For a camera controller to cost $150, especially when the competition is bundling camera + controller + game for $100, is crazy. I'm sure it's impressive technology, but I have a hard time believing it'll sell at all well at that sort of a price point. It's not just that it's a hardware add-on, but it's a camera one to boot. The PS2, PS3, 360 and Wii have all relased camera peripherals already. You can find them at the Sears clearance rack sometime. How often do you see them used? And every one was WAY cheaper than this. If it's $100, I'll buy one. If it's $150, I won't. And I think many other consumers will likely feel the same way.

 at the idea that Wii Fit was a "must-have" app. If I want exercise, I go for a walk. If I'm feeling lazy, I play video games.

Yep. The reason the Wii's motion controller has been "accepted" is because it came with a cheap system and you were forced to use it. Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 motion controllers will never be more than niche this generation. They should have both waited for their next consoles.

Oh, I totally agree - but soccer moms and lazy fatties ate that shit up!

If this is $150, it will be an utter failure from day one. Even $100 is pushing it, IMO.

Doesn't matter. It was a huge success, negating your earlier point that every hardware add-on has failed.

 I lost almost 20 pounds using Wii Fit and watching what I ate for a few months. And I'm neither a soccer mom or a lazy fattie. It's just like any other piece of decent exercise equipment....you see results if you actually use it.

I think it's telling that for six months we completely ignored this thread, and we're the target audience for the thing.

Re: Project Natal

I still don't get how its going to work in the long run.

The only things I saw running with it were WiiSports types games and a driving game.

Jumping around like and idiot trying playing dodge ball would be fun for about 5 min.

Expecting people to hold their arms out in front of them grasping some "phantom" steering wheel failed with MarioKartWii. Its neat if you are 3 years old racing cartoon cars. Using it for Dirt, or GTA, or other driving games or racers on an HD console its just not going to work.

I can see it working for RB to add band effects or video effects of some sorts. It would enhance the stage environments w/o interfering the core gameplay.

I don't think so, there really hasn't been any news or hype for quite some time so there hasn't been anything to talk about.

We're not the target audience though. We talk about videogames on the internet, let alone play them all the time. This is going after people who are too intimidated to even hold a controller in their hand. ;)

The outlet for those people, CNN and various other news sources for example, won't pick up on it till right before it's release. Then their target audience will be activated.

From that video, it looks like the target audience will be sad loners and/or creepy old men.

Seriously, who would dare complain about a $150 price tag when you can get gaming experiences like this :

As awful as I think that video is, one thing I instantly noticed sorta made me smile. That kid in the red, at first he doesn't seem impressed. Look at his face at the start of that gif. Then as he turns around and he sees his parents going crazy, when he turns back around he has a big pleased grin on his face.

I agree, and I hope this doesn't delay the next generation.

Then again, maybe by offering it separately now, they can find out if it has viability and whether it should be included in the next console or not.

I know a lot (read: all) of the videos so far make you look like a seizuring monkey while playing this "block the ball" game, but couldn't that be just people not knowing how to play? Weren't the first videos of Wii Sports pretty hilarious as well?
