No voice control for Kinect launch
by Ben Parfitt

UPDATED: Headline feature for new Xbox 360 motion camera to be activated at some point post launch

Microsoft has confirmed to MCV that Kinect will not boast any voice control functionality at launch.

Speaking at Gamescom, marketing manager for Xbox Live EMEA Robin Burrowes stated that “we will be announcing when voice control will be turned on in due course”.

Earlier demonstrations of Kinect had depicted users switching between various functions and selecting media on Xbox 360 by simply telling the console what it was they wanted it to do. The peripheral will also be able to recognise the voices of individual users.

Earlier this month the platform holder touted such functionality as one of the key reasons why hardcore gamers will be keen to be amongst the first owners of the device.

UPDATE 1: MCV can also confirm that chat software Video Kinect will also not feature as part of the accessory's launch. Like voice control, that will also arrive at a later date.

It's like they're doing everything in their power to convince us not to buy it.

Okay, now they've updated the story at MCVUK and they claim that it WILL be ready for launch.

UPDATE: Microsoft has issued the following statement to MCV.
“Voice control is an exciting part of the Kinect for Xbox 360 controller-free experience and we can confirm that it will be available at launch in November 2010. Only on Xbox 360 will you be able to navigate the Kinect Hub using your voice to control your movies, TV Shows and music. We do not have additional details to share about local voice availability at this time.”
It's still unclear what the exact situation is. It seems that English language support for Kinect will be in place for launch, but the exact timetable for other European language support remains undecided. That's all the information we have for now.
Apologies for all the confusion.

Re: Chuckd21's Project Natal thread. AKA Kinect

So people who've gotten into the Beta are saying that the Kinect update they have to download essentially breaks your avatar. Since avatars are getting a redesign because of the Kinect, what this means is, for example, if you're in the Beta and download the update, games that use your avatar will no longer work. Guitar Hero 5 / Band Hero, the millions of XBLIG games that support them, etc.

Simple solution to not break your avatar related games.... don't buy Kinect.

Oh you're in the beta? Sorry, you can't play Keflings anymore.

I can see this being used for better games in the future. Take for example a game like 'Heavy Rain' with Kinect you can have an online multiplayer where each character is played by a real player involved in the mystery. No scripted choices all the dialogue would come from the players themselves. Each game would be completely different and could have endless amount of endings.

Yup. They could even make a 'Clue' kinnect game. The only problem is Murder mystery games in general are not that popular on home consoles.

When I play a game I would like to be a be a side character working in a gun shop or something. This isn't eXistenz. Games still need structure, and "writing on the fly" probably won't work too well.

Well, that and the fact that the Kinect doesn't really work very well.

Mr. Pinata did it in the family room with a Kinect camera.

Isn't the new HP game supposed to be somewhat Gears of War-ish? I thought it was stop and pop spell duels and such. Having it on Kinect might make it like those arcade games where you have to duck to reload.

What's a movie called when it's not good enough for direct-to-dvd? Syfy Original?

Further, I hope your movie's soundtrack is nothing but Guns N' Roses songs.
