Re: Official Dragon Age: Origins thread
I'm about 7 hours in after spending a lot of time playing this weekend. It's enjoyable and I find it addicting to keep going back to play, but so far I've enjoyed Mass Effect more. The interface bugs me and seems overly complicated, both in action and going through your basic inventory/character/quests. So far as a Human Warrior, it's been pretty easy bashing my way through all the fights though. Does it get more difficult or is it just because Warrior is easy to play?
With all the origin stories it will be hard to resist playing this at least 2 more times through though. Solid game, but so far it still has me looking forward to ME2 in a month.

Re: Official Dragon Age: Origins thread
just installed it last night.
graphics are pretty outdated.
hopefully the gameplay will makeup for it.
Each origin story has a different cutscene?
If so, i might try each char in the beginning to get the stories/cutscenes.
no way i am playing thru each since i read that it takes 80 hours to complete.

Re: Official Dragon Age: Origins thread
I just started as a Human Mage, but expect I will play the other origins at some point (Human Noble, Dwarf Commoner, etc.) Even if I don't continue past Ostagar, each one is probably good for 1-2 hours of playtime.
One thing I like is that your Origin story is incorporated into other parts of the game. For example, in the main storyline, I have now returned to the Circle Tower (site of the Mage Origin story) and people are recognizing me and referring back to the time I left the tower, etc. I imagine the same thing happens elsewhere in the game for those with different origins. It really adds to the experience.

The only Bioware games I have played are Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. I loved KotOR, but I quit playing ME after 5 hours or so (bored). Since my two experiences with Bioware are polar opposites, do you think I would like Dragon Age?

Re: Official Dragon Age: Origins thread
I played this game for about 3 hours last night and i'm already hooked.
its really fun. i love the real time combat. Just like the Baldur's Gate games.
Is the latest patch a must install on the PC?
I don't see an option to upgrade to the latest version inside the game.
Also don't see anywhere to download the patch from bioware's website.
Where is a legit place to download the latest patch for the PC?

So there are two points of data which disagree and you want us to predict from it? Pull out a coin.

I see that the link goes to patch 1.01b so it isn't the 1.02 latest patch (though it says it's 1.02).
Gamershell (I trust this site and get stuff from here often) has it Here.
1.02 Patch notes
Patch 1.02 Notes:
Many of the fixes affecting balance, gameplay, or plot scripting are already included in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 versions of Dragon Age: Origins.
Balance
* Daggers now apply 0.5 points of damage per additional point in dexterity and 0.5 points of damage per additional point in strength, as originally intended. This increases dagger damage for high-dexterity characters.
* During combat, mana or stamina reserves now correctly regenerate more quickly when reserves are low. This allows players to occasionally use an talent or spell in the later stages of lengthy fights.
* When exploring, mana and stamina now regenerate more quickly at higher character levels. This reduces downtime between fights.
* The spells Force Field, Crushing Prison, Cone of Cold, and Blizzard now have shorter durations and/or longer cooldowns. This ensures that combatants can no longer stun-lock each other by repeatedly casting the same spell.
* The cooldowns for several low-level sustained abilities are now shorter. This ensures that players are not penalized for accidentally deactivating them.
* Certain battles were not scaling properly, resulting in excessively difficult fights. They now scale as intended.
* Enemy corpses now drop health poultices and money more appropriately, resulting in less clutter in the player's inventory.
Gameplay
* In rare cases, enemy corpses were selectable when they contained no loot. This no longer occurs.
* Party members whose combat tactics were set to defensive behavior no longer stop attacking after using a spell or talent.
* In rare cases, combat tactics conditions could fail to determine whether a character had enough mana or stamina to use an ability. This no longer occurs.
* The Rally talent no longer repeats its audio effect if it is active during certain conversations.
* The Rally talent no longer deactivates upon area transitions or conversations.
* The Shimmering Shield spell now deactivates when the character is out of mana.
Plot *Spoiler Warning*
PC Specific
* Controlling a summoned creature (like a ranger's pets) during certain special area transitions no longer results in odd behavior.
* Creating a character in a custom module did not create a folder for saves. This could result in corruption of main campaign saves. This no longer occurs.
* In some cases, the class icon was set incorrectly for characters imported from the downloadable Character Creator. This no longer occurs.
* The options menu now includes a setting to automatically download previously purchased content that is not currently installed.
* After installing new downloadable content, the game now always reminds the user to restart the game.
* The icons for some promotional downloadable content items were missing. They now appear correctly.
* The screenshot upload GUI would stop working from time to time on the client. There was a memory override that was fixed. It is a client fix. It doesn't affect the other problems we have seen on the server.

I'm having fun with this game, about 8 hours in. I'm a human mage named Etrigan.
What did everyone name the dog (if they rescued him)?

I tried thinking of some good names but just went with Dogmeat. I figure I'll get more creative with my 2nd playthrough.

That's too bad. For me, the dog ended up being the most powerful fighter. If I was ever over my head in a fight, he'd be the last one alive and sometimes took out 5-6 people on his own to make it through the battle.

Re: Official Dragon Age: Origins thread
Is money important in this game?
Should i buy equipment from the vendors or wait for drops?
Also, i am running out of space. Will there be a place where you can store all your stuff later on in the game? (I am on Lothering right now)

I didn't realize until reading earlier in the thread that some vendors sell Backpacks to increase the amount you can carry. I just bought one and it was fairly expensive. The lack of money kind of sucks, but it seems like most of the equipment I can find is as good or at least somewhat comparable as the ones being sold.

Re: Official Dragon Age: Origins thread
Does anyone know if you can get Shale if you've already started a game? Before I started playing, I used the code for him and the blood dragon armor but stupidly forgot to download them. After DLing both, the armor is now in the game but I don't see Honnleath on my map.
