It's also starting to come out that certain combinations of items freezes the DS and you have to turn it off then turn it back on.

Picked this up today at Fry's for $24.99 (Toys R Us was out when I got there around noon... all the TRUs in Austin according to the electronics guy).

I played for around 3 hours through level 1... gold starring each level by completing them 4 different times with different sets of objects.

Definitely a lot of fun. There's control issues, but I don't think they take away from the experience.

The ultimate weapon: God riding a panda with a chainsaw. heh.

Looks like the British terminology is built-in as well (lorre, lift, etc...) in case you want to go that route. heh.

I would say the same. Only through the first levels but using the stylus to move the character sucks. Nothing like moving Link in Zelda. It isn't very responsive and at times it is difficult to get the character or items to go where exactly where you want them (esp. the main character). Can't understand why they didn't use the crosspad as an option to move the character and use the face buttons to move the camera as needed.

Anyone else notice that the Scribblenaut theme sounds an awful lot like a happy, jaunty version of "Imagine"? C'mon Yoko, sue their ass. Why should Courtney Love be the only crazy bitch widow suing the gaming industry?

I'm really surprised this won IGN Game of E3 award. Not that it isn't clever -- it is. Just the flaws are so instantly noticable that I'm stunned they could spend even five minutes on the game and not see them. Over Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Halo ODST, Modern Warfare 2 and Beatles Rock Band, they picked this? It's fun to mess around with, but it can be so frustrating. I wanted to knock a tree down with a bulldozer, but once I got into the thing, I couldn't get it to move. We're not talking about a super-complicated interaction there, but it just wouldn't work.

That said, it is fun to play with. I wanted to see if Chupacabra was there. Sure enough, it was. Then I couldn't remember what it did. I put in a bat, he ignored it. Then I put in a goat. Dead meat. :)

sequel, sequel, sequel, sequel, sequel. Sometimes originality is worth more than the best sequel, even with a few flaws.

That's certainly a point, but but when it comes to video games, Playability trumps Originality any day of the week and this game isn't really that playable. I think it's worth the $14 + tax it ended up costing me simply as a diversion, but I can't imagine anyone not becoming very frustrated with this game really quickly.

Mine froze on like 1-8. Also, put yourself in a tank or a stealth bomber and god is pretty easy to take out. I like putting people around and then bringing a vampire or zombie to turn em. lots of fun.

 I would happily trade ALL the internet memes for a more direct control system. This game has real functionality problems, though it's still pretty cool to mess around with and I'm sure to bring it with me to the courthouse in a couple of weeks when I have to report for jury duty. :(

I was thinking : Giving this game the E3 Game of the Year award is like going to the Detroit Auto show and giving the top award to a flying car that doesn't work -- It's cool in concept, but really not the achievement it pretends to be.

I think the Start screens are better than the game. I wanted to see what would happen if I got into a steam roller and ran over an egg, cockroach and whoopie cushion -- just what you think would happen.

I started playing the challenge levels. I like to complete the challenges in the most morbid ways possible

Spoiler:
In the level where you have to give the guy in the desert something to drink, i summoned Bleach. But i couldn't get him to drink it

and

Spoiler:
In the level when you have to get the girls cat off the roof I summoned a lightning storm. The rain got the cat off the roof and the lightning bolt decided to hit me instead

What sort of an effed-up world is it where you can feed brains to zombies in a game, but can't give a thirsty guy a beer?

My new favorite thing is summoning black holes to take care of things in my way. Very effective as long as I don't get too close.

I had a freeze twice so far so this game does have issues. On 2-8 I had only summoned one item, but the game still froze on me.

That parody was pretty good. I am still loving this just because it makes me think about how I want to solve the problem, not just how I am supposed to. Sure there were a couple puzzles where I just said screw it and used the standbys of Jetpack or whatever but it's so much more fun when I hit a puzzle and need to set the DS down for a bit while I go over the puzzle in my head.

I agree the controls for the character do kinda suck sometimes, but it has yet to ruin a puzzle for me. Is there a way to change the character on the start screen? One of my favorite things to do is go on that screen and interact with stuff. I just wish I could be the zombie or shaman while on that screen. Also, has anyone found another way to kill a cockroach besides setting off a nuke?

This is sure to ruffle a few feathers:

"Racial Term in DS' Scribblenauts? Unintentional, Developer Explains."

I believe the developer and don't think this was intentional or malicious by any stretch. But I do find it hard to believe that at no point during the game's development did someone speak up and say "hey, this is a word with racial connotations and it brings up what looks like a watermelon...wtf guys?"

Michael Corvin 09-17-09 02:21 PM

Reading through the Kotaku comments, that's the most surprising thing that's come out of this...the number of people who are just completely unfamiliar with the term. I'm not sure whether to count that as a good thing or a bad thing. But it makes the scenario in which nobody raised any concern during the game's development a bit more plausible, I suppose.

Still, a google search for the word "sambo" returns tons of results for the fighting style and the racist charicature, with nothing on the "fig leaf gourd" in the first few pages. So I'm still a bit skeptical, but again, I don't think it was intentional or malicious. I guess the word for it is uninformed.

On the surface, without reading Kotaku's writeup on the subject, it boils down to this: writing a racist epithet conjures up what looks like a watermelon. Based on just that alone, that's pretty offensive (though I'll probably be in the minority on that point based on past discussions on this board). I think the way Kotaku handled it is much more responsible than if the mainstream media had picked this story up.

Wow, what a disaster for them. You would think someone would have caught that in testing. Tons of bad press on a good game.

Speaking of the game has anyone found a way to get past trip wires. I'm on a level now that seems to have no way around tripping them. I know how to block the item so it doesn't get destroyed, but I wish I could deactivate the trip wire.

I tried teleporter, but ended up in another place that I guess is the developers since it has their logo on the wall. Also tried wormhole, but that just spawned an alien out of it.

I haven't played yet (my copy was delivered today -- I can't wait to get home from work and give it a try!!!!), but can you go over them somehow? Perhaps conjure up a pogo stick or a bridge?

I swear I am so tired of the PC world we live in. I have known my share of people who are racist and of all the terms I have heard them use, of all the jokes they have told and of all the stereotypes they have mentioned I have never once heard this word. Why do idiots have to make this out to be more than it is. The word means a figleaf gourd and it looks like a watermelon, so instead of creating a second image in the game they used a watermelon. I guess there are people out there offended that if you type in Zeus the same image is given as God. This is simply a case of some idiot in the media trying to break a story.

I'm pretty sure some asshole sat there for hours, typing in every offensive word he could think of and this is the only thing he came up with.

FatTony 09-17-09 05:44 PM

Re: scribblenauts anyone?

Actually, the full list of words in the game was leaked the other day:

http://rush68.net/u/files/scribfull.txt

Sure enough, "sambo" is in there, and it was only a matter of time before someone tried it out.
