Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose
Limbo is great so far. I am really enjoying the art, the enviroment and the nice flow of the platforming and puzzles. A very unique experience and I have no regrets buying this game. This and Deathspank has made for a nice couple weeks of arcade releases.
I'm not to sure on any of the other SoA releases but Limbo is a nice treat. |
Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose
I made it through the first two hours of Limbo and am just not feeling it. The previously mentioned subtle puzzle took me a couple minutes to figure out, but the rest of the puzzles I've encountered usually just take an initial death and then I get through them on the second try. So far, it feels like a free flash game, but with superbly executed art direction. I haven't read how long it is, so maybe I'll get enough out of it to feel like they earned my money, but right now I'm feeling a little ripped off for 1200 points.

I'm about halfway through Limbo and I think it's awesome at any price.

I gave up after trying to kill the damn spider at the end of the demo. Cool game but I'll wait until it's half off.

LOL@ the thought of a dragon avatar pet comparison being the deciding factor for which version of the game to get.
Need to download Limbo demo. |
Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose
Whether I use my dragon hatchling or not, I certainly see $15 of value in DeathSpank. After my playtime with the Limbo demo, I decided that I wanted to play DeathSpank more right now, so I bought it and played for a couple of hours last night. No big surprises, the demo is a very fair impression of the full game (except that you don't get to mix & match your weapons like you do in the full game, which is very fun). Overall, it certainly isn't anything earth-shattering, but it's certainly fun. I'm happy with the purchase and see myself playing this one a lot in the next few weeks.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose
The actual gameplay mechanics of DeathSpank seemed way too loose to me, there's almost no feedback in your movement or combat (both in giving and receiving). With everything else the game has going for it, to fall apart on the single most important aspect seems astronomically sloppy to me.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose
I'm not sure I understand your criticism, Pixy. I accept it as a button-mashing dungeon crawler. I stand near a baddie, press the buttons and he dies. The blocking mechanic (Hold R trigger) works better than most games -- if nothing else, it's way easier for me to use than most games that require a quick press of one of the bumper buttons.. Manual targeting can be a little wonky, but that's the case in many games. Camera can occasionally get stuck, but it wasn't much of a problem for me. What problems were you having?

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose
It's a "feeling" thing, maybe even subtle, I guess. There's no distinctions in the character's movement from moving, attacking or being attacked. There's no feedback in what your character is doing. There's no feedback in hitting something or getting hit. It's an extremely amateurish system from a development point of view and completely unsatisfying from a gameplay point of view.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose
My issue with DeathSpank was the camera distance. At the very least in the demo I could not figure out how to move closer to the action. The camera for me was set at a Diablo distance, which works on a computer since you're sitting right there, but when I'm ten to fifteen feet back it made it hard to see what I was doing.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose
I felt that way about the game's text.. fine for sitting at a desk but way too small for a TV.
You have SOME control over the camera with the right analog stick, you can zoom in and out to some degree. |

It certainly isn't a perfect game, but I do indeed like it. It's cool that I've found an action RPG that not only do I like, but one my daughter can actually play on her own. I'm a sucker for this kind of game and I think this one pulls it off well enough for me. BTW : You guys need a bigger TV. I haven't had any issues with either text size or camera distance. :) Oh yeah, Pixy, I was curious for your take on Limbo. Please share your opinion if you've tried it out yet. |
Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose
I, for one, appreciate you buying Deathspank, Decker, thereby ensuring the sale happens sooner rather than later. And kudos for passing on Limbo knowing that a sale for that is already guaranteed.

Yeah, that is subtle, but I get what you're saying. I died several times without realizing I was taking damage because I wasn't watching my health bar close enough. Though since your penalty for dying is somewhere between Lego Star Wars and Bioshock 1, it didn't really affect me that much.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose
As for not enough feedback on DeathSpank, just do what I did, and turn on the damage numbers in the options. That way you see how much damage you're taking and how much you're dealing.. Plus, seeing numbers is cool!

Yeah, it's missing that visceral, crunchy kill-feel prevalent in good shooters by Treasure or even games like Gears/God of War.

Just think of it like a JRPG or MMO. Most of those you don't even actually have to connect to hit, just be in the vicinity.
