As far as the demo to Limbo goes -- I'm torn. I certainly appreciate the style of the game. It's atmospheric and spooky as all get-out. I like the disquieting feeling it induces. Then again on the other hand, I didn't think it was much fun. Solving puzzles somehow felt less rewarding than in other games as you immediately just move to the next one. I know this is a "it's not you, it's me" sort of criticism, but the game wasn't as enjoyable or entertaining to me as I had expected. I do love the sudden and shocking ways death finds you -- I jumped the first time it happened. It certainly seems to be a clever high-quality puzzle game; I admire the effort involved. If I had gotten a review copy given to me for free, I'd probably gush too. But I hesitate to spend 1200 points on it. It's not a game that after playing the demo I feel the need to rush out and buy the full game right away, especially at that price. I'm not sure I'd get enough enjoyment out of it -- if anything, it's making me lean towards buying the fun, humorous and meaty DeathSpank instead.
Limbo to me feels a lot like Braid - I game I admire more than I actually enjoy.

This sounds pretty much like the non-gushing recommendation I made. Glad you were able to suss that out from the demo and/or subconscious warnings.

I just hope the rest of the world doesn't immediately buy into the hype and then piss and moan that they didn't get $15 worth out of the game. I fear a huge backlash on this one, especially with all the "high scoring" reviews.

It deserves that praise from a technical and artistic standpoint, but comes nowhere close to an A for value.

How long is the demo and of what sections is it? ie. which puzzles?

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

pinata, I didn't mean to imply that you were gushing over the game or were influenced by a free copy. I just meant that as an original gaming experience it's pretty impressive, but when it comes to actually pulling the trigger to buy it, I just didn't feel the urge. Perhaps not the greatest comparison, but when I played Splosion Man, I was only a few minutes into the demo and pressed the start button so I could buy the game right away -- I couldn't wait to keep playing it. This game, I felt that trying the demo gave me the flavor of the game, so I "get it", but I didn't really feel compelled to keep on playing right away. I know I'll pick it up eventually, but right now there are other things I'd rather spend points on, and honestly other games I'd rather spend my time playing right now - including DeathSpank.

You addressed the length of the game, which is another important issue and one that you'll have no idea about if you don't read some reviews. That's a concern to me too. If there's a backlash over this game, that might very well be part of it. Three to four hours of gameplay for $15 with little replayability could very well be an issue for some people.

Also, it'll be interesting to see how MS reconciles their new family-friendly profile with a game like this that seems innocuous and is high-profile, but is a game that is CLEARLY not for kids.

I had to turn it off when my four year old son came in the room, but it seemed to be the first 20 minutes or so of the game. I made it past several bear traps, used the boat, climbed some ropes, stuff like that.

I let my kids play it :) It was great as they worked together to solve the little puzzles, but once they got to a certain point about 10 minutes in they were done. I knew it was coming so I just watched them for the reaction which was

Spoiler:
simultaneous shrieking, my 9 year-old literally launching the controller up in the air, and each of them curling themselves up. Then my 6 year-old said "This game is too freaky, I'm going to bed."

It was awesome.

I let them play as part of the review because it seemed so simple and pick-up-and-play like Super Mario Brothers. Just hand someone a controller with no fancy buttons or dialog boxes or text to read or cutscenes to sit through. I just handed it to her and said play.

Desitnation Arcade is out. I wonder if this is supposed to be a precursor to Kinect kind of stuff.

There are two avatar unlockables. A hoodies for starting it up, and then after you search around for awhile a dragon avatar pet unlocks. (I got it by searching through friend recommendations.)

I knew about the first avatar award. Didn't know about the dragon -- will have to look for that. BTW : There goes some motivation for buying DeathSpank. I mean how many dragon pets does my avatar actually need?
edit: Now that I think about it, they pushed Destination Arcade back a week. I wonder if this was the reason : It's pretty clear they give you the pet dragon avatar award in the demo to motivate you to buy the game. Can you imagine if people saw that in the demo not five minutes after unlocking a free pet dragon avatar award in Destination Arcade? Those publishers must have been pissed. This way they at least got a week with the exclusive dragon pet.

I posted above that Destination Arcade is pretty clearly targeted at the Kinect navigation functionality. For those using a controller, it looks pretty ugly, IMO.

If only they'd let you have more than one pet active at a time so they interact/fight.

pinata is a sick man who traumatizes his kids! ;)

Actually, I was playing with my nine year old daughter. I think it's okay for her, since there are no blood or guts visible. It's still pretty gross and disturbing though. No way my little one will be watching me play this.

There is a option in Limbo to turn off the gore.

Anyone with both the DeathSpank dragon and the Destination Arcade dragon have a comparison of the two? The Deathspank dragon had me leaning towards the 360 version of deathspank but if the DS and DA dragons are essentially the same, then I'll just get it for the PS3 when it's on sale.

But the 6 year-old is the street-smart one and figured out the puzzles. They have to play together ;)

I think the DA dragon is way better, the DeathSpank one is to fat.

DA Dragon

Played Limbo for about 30 minutes at lunchtime today. No regrets over buying the full game without trying the demo. I'd pay $15 to watch someone else play this game, it's that beautiful.

(And no, I will not pay $15 to watch you play it now that I already bought it, but thanks for thinking about offering. :D )

LOL@ the thought of a dragon avatar pet comparison being the deciding factor for which version of the game to get.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

Played around with Destination Arcade a bit, and while I think the interface does need some work, it does have some things I really like. I like that different filters that can be used when looking for games, the most important being price, and that the filters are stackable, like being able to look for multiplayer, E rated, 500 point games. A few of the complaints other than the interface just feeling a bit off are, it would have been nice to be able to launchh straight from the dash in the Game Marketplace row, sorta like last.fm, zune and those type get launched. I also would have liked a way to see larger screenshots. I can't believe there's no way to buy the DLC for any of these games in here either.
It's funny I would have probably liked this more even with all of its issues if it was the entire marketplace instead of just the arcade games, since marketplace as a whole needs the update. Afterall, yesterdays add-on new release list, all 20 slots were Blaz Blue CS or Record of Agarest War, and last week had an insane amount for NCAA. How difficult would it be for them to just show the one boxshot for each game and when you click on it it defaults to the sorted by most recent list???

Played Limbo through the part where you
Spoiler:
rip the last leg off the spider
and I'm really liking it so far.

I felt like an idiot though at the part where
Spoiler:
you have to move the box under the vine and jump from branch to branch. I must have spent 10 minutes trying to cross the water with it before I noticed the vine

Just wait until later when the even more subtle puzzles are there. I got so pissed at a couple puzzles, it's not even funny.
