Yeah, that was a favorite of mine as well. Did that one on Veteran too. Oy vey!
Only took me a few tries but man oh man was that fun. Felt like the last stand at the Alamo just hiding in that corner by the bumper cars picking of mobs, lobbing grenades, throwing them back, stopping the bum rush of soldiers and dogs. Whew. It was fun and not very tedious like my personal hell of the trying to get the Mile High Club achievement.

I gave up on Devil May Cry 4 for similar reasons, though there was a bit of the "too hard" element to it as well. I originally gave up on Bioshock because the Normal difficulty was way too hard for me. But I eventually went back to it and played through on Easy and I'm really glad I did.
The only game I've played in recent years that I can think of that doesn't fit into the "too hard" or "too boring" categories is Wind Waker.

I found Bioshock normal mode a little easy (since you could save anywhere and reload quickly...PLUS the Vita chambers). One of the few games I've finished in recent years.
I loved Zelda:WW and played about half of it. But I got sick of the stupid sailing mechanic and eventually stopped playing it. It was just too irritating to get around to anywhere.
I'm doing better with JPRGs now if I don't worry about completing everything and every side quest. I killed the boss character in FFX in like 5 minutes and that was without level grinding - but I did do like every single sidequest. Now I just play the game, consult a FAQ once in a while if I'm stubborn about getting to a treasure chest or something, and don't worry about completing everything. After walking right by the Bahamut materia in FF7 long ago and missing it I got kind of paranoid about getting everything. I've gotten over it.

well if the game gets better i might stick with it then. currently i am frustrated like hell on the bomb the ships section. there are like 10,000 enemies firing from all different directions while i am trying to find these damn bombs. i wish i could zoom the camera out some -- i usually get killed looking around trying to find out where the bullets are coming from.

DMC4 had just the right balance of difficulty IMO although a bit easier than the first one. It just got a little tedious when they recycled the areas backward. Then again DMC1 did a little of that.

On Bioshock, I basically got my ass handed to me anytime I took on a Big Daddy, so by the third one I just gave up on the game. Eventually went back on Easy and found it much more enjoyable, but I should also mention I'm not the seasoned gamer I once was and this was the first FPS I'd played in probably 5 years.

I guess I should have mentioned that DMC4 was the first of the series that I'd actually played, so it was all new to me. And the part that specifically had me thinking the game was hard was the one where you had to swing across the ceiling and if you didn't make it to the end point, you fell to the room below and had to kill a bunch of enemies before trying again. I think there were a couple of parts like that and they were just annoying and frustrating.

Bioshock: the Big Daddy's are supposed to be really hard, especially in the beginning, where you have to use some brains if you want to take them down. Later on in the game, you become so ridiculously overpowered that they're cupcakes.

Another vote for "stop when the fun stops". This usually isn't even an issue of difficulty, but rather one of simple enjoyment. With Metroid Prime 3, it wasn't that I was stuck or hated the game, but I wasn't completely drawn in, and then Bioshock came out and drew my attention away. On the flip side, I enjoyed Condemned but got to a point halfway where the game irritated me - a combination of difficulty and the novelty of the premise wearing off - so I gave it up. Two years later I picked up Condemned 2 and played through it and enjoyed it. So I gave Condemned a second chance, and whatever issue I had with the game the first time was gone.

I would just throw grenades at the Big Daddy, die, come back and throw more at him, die again. The game remembered the damage that was previously done so eventually he goes down.

Re: At What Point Do You Give Up?
Last night, I was ready to throw in the towel on Tales of Vesperia. After 50 hours and about 60% complete, I am completely stuck on this insane puzzle level called Heracles.
Yet, the completionist side of me tells me to keep going at it. Study the whole area, and eventually, I'll find my way out of here. I would feel like I've just wasted hours of my life if I quit now.
But the problem with this level is the developers thought it would be great fun to toss in battles every 3 seconds. The enemies block the access routes so you can't just avoid them.
And if I clear an area, exit and come back, the enemies have all respawned. I've had to to fight the same battle over 100 times in this freaking level. I tried watching youtube vidoes of the level, but it's the same problem. I have to sit through 20-30 minutes of watching the same battles.
This is just not fun IMO, and a major stink of mine with JPRGs. Combine the frequent battles with lack of save points, and this game has been more frustration than fun.
So when a game loses the fun factor, do you give up? Have you ever invested a lot of time in a game, but couldn't beat it?

Did you ever get past this part? I am playing Tales now, and after reading your post I went into this section thinking it was going to kick my ass, and found it to be not that bad at all....
