Getting back to Rock Band talk, last night I played through the Country songs I downloaded from Pepsi and my sightread, I got 100% on Free & Easy on Hard. I was happy with that.

Maybe we're not meant to be...

Their follow-up was quite disappointing though.

 I agree 100%. It's great from beginning to end. I still spin it from time to time. 10,000 Horses and It's Alright were great songs as well. Some of those other bands don't belong there either, like Live, POTUSA, & Collective Soul.

We had a similar discussion 3-4 months ago and I mentioned Theory of a Deadman for DLC(I only remember it because Shag said he had never heard of them). What's funny though is their first/only hit at the time of the discussion was roughly 10 years ago. I had no idea they were still around and then out of nowhere they have this huge ass hit, Hate My Life.

That's odd. Women have to sing, too!

I burned a few Pepsi caps on some female-fronted DLC because my 5 year old niece likes to watch me play the game, especially if there's a woman singing. Well, that and I like the songs.

True, but the majority of people would probably, um, lump them in with all of the other 90s alt rock one hit wonders. Well, I guess "Peaches" had some success, too (when will that song be available as DLC?). That's why I paired them with Lit above. Everyone else from that era originally included in RB2 seems to have a more enduring popular legacy.

I'm not hating, though. I still have an old "Visualize Lump" bumper sticker on my steamer trunk.

And count me among those who don't know who Dexter Freebish is/are/was/were. I watched that video and the song didn't ring a bell. And I'm all about 90s corporate alt rock.

Now that I think about it, we really need some Cake DLC. (Not that I think they should be included with the aggressively bland - love that term :) - bands above; far from it. We're just way over due for their stuff and it just popped into my head.)

Re: Live and Collective Soul... there's a definite drop off in quality for both. If we're talking Live up through Throwing Copper... no, they don't belong in this conversation. But their career is like that of two completely different bands. Anything after Throwing Copper, I couldn't even listen to. And I'd consider Mental Jewelry one of my top 10 favorite modern rock albums. I don't know what I'd do if HMX ever released "Pain Lies on the Riverside." I'd lose my head.

Collective Soul, well, their first two CDs were quality. And Dosage was solid, but they've released a lot of crap since 1999. They are so fair game for inclusion on Buzz Ballads.

I was just going through some old stuff on my iPod and I was wondering why hasn't anyone tapped some Stabbing Westward? "Shame" on Rock Band would be ballistic. There's a handful of SW songs that demand a revival. Or some Urge Overkill from Saturation? "Sister Havana" for godsakes.

Okay, I'm done. Just musing while I wait for Mad Men to start.

Secret Samadhi wasn't for everyone, but I enjoyed it. However the Distance to Here, I thought, was classic Live. V and Songs from Black Mountain... meh.

Edit: I just went to wiki for shits and saw that I missed Birds of Pray. Falls in with V and SfBM. Also, I thought this was hilarious:

The members of Live have announced that the band will be taking a two-year hiatus as they work on other projects. Kowalczyk plans to release a solo album and the other band members are rumored to be recording an album with Kevin Martin of Candlebox.

Absolutely. Mental Jewelry is also on my list of top albums - it still holds up phenomenally well.

No shit! That is a fucking fantastic song. I never understood why it never got really popular. Did it even hit the Top 40?

If that was on RB, it would get played as often as "Hysteria" by Muse does.

Didn't someone on the Rock Band board contact Cake for them to be in Rock Band 2 and they said that Harmonix really wanted the Distance but Cake didn't want to give them that song or something?

Whitesnake's "Fool For Your Loving" with Steve Vai on guitar would be incredible.

Also you should get extra points and stars for playing guitar or bass with your crotch like they do in the video.

That would be news to me. There is a decent size Cake thread on the RB forums and I haven't seen any posts from HMX about it.

I have a weak spot for female-fronted power-pop bands, so I actually have a long, long list I wish HMX had included. :) I don't think they picked the greatest selections from some of the XX bands in the game itself and would say they've done a much better job with downloadable content.

Combine some girl fronted vocals with some older hardcore. Bring some more of the riot grrl stuff to Rock Band...

We have Bikini Kill.... now we need some Spitboy.

Per Wikipedia, Shame's highest position was #69 on the Hot 100 Airplay (#14 on US Modern Rock Chart) but couldn't qualify for the legit Billboard Top 40 because Stabbing Westward never released an official single for either "Shame" or "What Do I Have to Do." They released a string of three really solid albums between '94 and '98 and then poof, they were pretty much forgotten. "Save Yourself" from Darkest Days would be pretty sweet too.

And while we're on the industrial rock conversation... what about Gravity Kills? "Guilty," "Blame" or "Enough" from the self-titled CD. Or some KMFDM? I know it wasn't their post popular song (at least among the KMFDM fans I knew) but I loved me some "Juke Joint Jezebel." With the exception of NIN, I really think the 90s industrial scene is an untapped wealth of resources.

Talking about these bands almost cleanses the palate after all that Eve 6 chatter.

I suffer from the same affliction. There's no other explanation for my fondness for Paramore... other than that the Penguins used "crushcrushcrush" during the pre-game video at the Mellon two seasons ago.

The site that's powering the Rock Band Network seems to be soliciting for bands on Twitter. For example, they're trying to persuade Weird Al to submit tracks to the new service.

@alyankovic "Weird Al" in Rock Band? Yes, please! Check out http://www.rockgamerstudios.com #RBN and hit us up!

You should check out "The Reputation". You will not be disappointed.

Ha. I'm familiar, actually. (I was a fan of Sarge a million years ago and still keep "Dear Josie, Love Robyn" and "A Torch" in particular in pretty heavy rotation.)

Sub Pop's drive to bring their music to RBN hopefully means Velocity Girl isn't too far down the pike, and if that dog. or Tuscadero improbably made it in, I think my head might explode.

I think that's one of those upstart companies (read: groups of Rock Band players) who are offering to create a band's RBN tracks for a fee. There are 3 or 4 of them already.

As a fellow huge fan of the “Chick Rock” genre as I like to call it, my top 3 dream full DLC albums for Rock Band would have to be:

1. Veruca Salt: 8 Arms to Hold You
2. Letters to Cleo: Wholesale Meats and Fish
3. The Donnas: Spend the Night

The PAX schedule is out:

http://www.paxsite.com/schedule.php

I'll be attending the Harmonix panel, and I'll post a recap afterward.

Saturday, 5:30pm – 6:30pm, Serpent Theatre
Harmonix Panel
Rock Band Network is a groundbreaking initiative to empower musicians to put their songs into Rock Band themselves. But here’s the thing – it’s also pretty hard if you don’t know what you’re doing. Come see members of the Harmonix RBN team give a demonstration of the process from charting songs to playing them. With Special Guest – Jonathan Coulton.

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 09:45 PM.
