Without any new features, it's a no-sale for me. I could really care less about the size of the machine. If it had backward compatibility I would have bought one.

Hell, if it had backwards compatibility I would sell my fatty ps3 at a loss just to get one of those. Sony fucked up not making this backwards compatible. Even if it was software which likely would cost them next to nothing. They would get sales for ps2 games and the number of systems they sold would well make up for the minor inconvenience to them to add it.

Honestly they should just stop producing ps2's. When those run out then people would have no choice but to buy a ps3 if theirs broke or they wanted to play some ps2 games. Except for used, but a lot of people don't like to buy used.

When I was in Best Buy yesterday, there was a sign in the PS3 section indicating that the 80 GB was $299.99 and the 160 GB was $399.

Penny Arcade was brutal:

Reporters can't seem to decide if the three hundred dollar PS3 Slim is awesome or too awesome, when it's actually a barbed black crown of shame, and that's more or less the end of the discussion. It can't be seen as anything but a concession to a market that has consistently chosen their competitor's products - an act of contrition, the purest evidence possible that this brand is no longer sufficient to sway consumers. There is an optional stand available that allows you to stand the system vertically, on its side - making the system a literal tombstone, as well as a figurative one.

Exactly. But cheaper. To expect a $100.00 price drop PLUS more features would be a bit too much.
I would think that Sony is going to develop a software based BC and offer it as a download off the PSN store at a cost.

They're not saying it was stupid that Sony did that. They were arguing (correctly) that Sony's brand is not worth a premium this generation.

Compare this to Nintendo, who has actually increased (via the DSi) the cost-to-own of one of their platforms. (And unlike the Elite or the 160GB PS3, the DSi is a very strong seller).

I wonder how much a fat 60gig launch system would get on eBay or trade in? I might have to upgrade when this comes out.

How is selling the 60GB, arguably the best of all the SKUs, an "upgrade"?

I don't expect anything, just saying what it would take to get me interested.

EDIT: For the record I finally got a Slim on BF for $299 with LBP:GOTY and R&C:CiT included. Will be used for exclusives and as a backup Blu-Ray player which can also be moved to another room. Also got Uncharted, which is great. (Edited instead of posting b/c it's not worth the thread bump )
