I think that same dog is a a commercial where it skates in the house. Not sure what it was for. The video is great.

You know, I think that's a fair assumption. This game is a BOMB. Everyone says that DJ Hero was a disappointment, sales-wise. That $120 game had 1020 users on 360voice.com on its launch day. RIDE had, wait for it....50. That's right, 50. Nobody thought it was going to have Assasin's Creed 2 type numbers on launch day (4209), but still that's shocking. Hell, even Lego Indiana Jones 2 had 107 users yesterday and that's the sort of game that skews away from 360voice users. As much as it must have cost to develop that peripheral, Activision must be shitting themselves right now.

Ride could sell zero copies and Activition will still do just fine - may I point you towards MW2?

As expensive and ridiuclous as this is. I still dont get why its selling so poorly. Aren't the tony hawk games popular? Haven't all the ridiuclous guitar and rock band games sold like crazy?

This game belongs in arcades at like $5 a pop.

Re: Tony Hawk Ride

I haven't seen a single advertisment for it. When I went to best buy for the midnight release of Star Trek, I was shocked to see that it was coming out.

Yeah, I haven't seen any advertising or attempts to build hype for this game at all. Makes me think that it didn't turn out the way they hoped.

58 from Game Informer, but a couple more 90's from other sites with weak reviews.

They devoted a big chunk of the E3 press conference to this game. I think they must have had high hopes for this game in the spring. The lack of reviews is very telling. I know Activision has some sort of early review ban, but to basically keep the game hidden from reviewers until they can go to the store and buy it, that tells me they're afraid of a bunch of negative reviews (like the one that just hit from Game Informer that dubs it "A half-pipe full of frustration").

As far as the Tony Hawk games selling really well -- they used to, especially on the PS1 and early PS2. But they diluted the franchise with too many sequels and took the series in some unappealing directions that really ended up huring sales. Skate really outperformed TH this generation.

Re: Tony Hawk Ride

I'm starting to wonder if this is even worth getting at cut-rate bargain-bin prices. Giant Bomb's Quick Look certainly didn't inspire confidence in the game.

It's really quite strange: games of this kind, by which I mean peripheral games, typically allow ordinary people to engage in a kind of assisted fantasy. This is a game that actually punctures the fantasy, one that reinforces and almost codifies the user's ineptitude. As a product strategy, it must certainly be called unique.
So very, very true.

They also suggested using something like a chair to hold on to to keep your balance to make it more workable.

Had fun when I played with it at Best Buy. It might be worth 30 bucks. I'll pick it up in a few months.

That is exactly what I thought when I saw the commercial yesterday. Most gamers don't have the balance and coordination to step in that board and play it like a real skateboard. I was just imagining a lot of broken tables, TVs, appliances and bones after watching that commercial.

True but, to be fair Guitar Hero/Rock Band takes some coordination as well, especially drums.

Well, flailing around a drum set and failing a song is one thing, falling on your ass or headfirst into your flat screen is quite another.

Re: Tony Hawk Ride

Only a 5.0 from IGN.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/104/1048292p1.html

Seems like it could have been at least decent, just really shitty execution.

Re: Tony Hawk Ride

Reading the IGN review, it seems to me that 5.0 was a pretty generous score.

I always wonder how the developers can play something like this and go "Wow, this is fun". Thank fully there are some developers out there that will do everything to make sure their games are fine, not try to "Swindle" the consumer.

No, they're really not popular these days. From about 2000-2003 they were huge, but the bottom just fell out. I think part of the problem is that the first couple of THPS games did so well that it became this big fad, and they felt they had to continue doing a sequel every year, but at the same time they had to keep it "fresh." So they added stuff that didn't fit well, and gamers didn't like it. I think the series peaked at THPS4.

As for the music games, I don't see how that's a good comparison. After all, those came later, so we'll see how they hold up...

The brilliance of Skate and Skate 2 coupled with the terrible Tony Hawk's Proving Ground kinda put a damper on the popularity of the TH series. Tony Hawk Project 8 was really the last good TH game.
