I'm pretty sure it had to "click" in the center when I played.

If that's the case, it will certainly increase the learning curve. I've seen conflicting accounts online, so I don't know. Maybe I was breaking streaks and not realizing it? Or I was just getting used to it and hitting the actual center most of the time.

It's fun. I might be sold on the game but I have LESS THAN ZERO interest in the music, so it's hard to validate a purchase.

And that'll be it's biggest barrier. The genre of music. With GH/RB you can vary up styles and mix and match and still keep almost everybody entertained on some level. For DJ Hero, if you don't like mashups, you're not going to like the game from the jump. I hope they're able to combat that, or that people like the gameplay enough that they actually maybe even start to enjoy the music experience as well. I know there's a ton of songs in RB that I play and actually enjoy that I never would've even listened to before. Maybe that can happen with an entire genre?

So I tried the demo at Best Buy today. I went through the tutorial, but I'm still not scratching correctly. Whenever I get to a scratching section, my combo always breaks. Is there a proper technique? Do you have to scratch a specific amount of times? Do it at a particular pace? Or maybe my rhythm was just that messed up.

I tried the demo too. It's pretty cool, especially in the sense that you really feel like you're creating something new (even if you're really not), as opposed to GH/RB where you're really just unlocking tracks you've heard many times before. It's not easy, that's for sure, but it could be fun. I have no idea where a controller like that could be kept -- it's quite the eyesore in the family room.

And there was definitely a click in the middle of the fader.

Oh yeah, there's definitely a click. I was just saying that I thought that the game will count the crossfader as being in the center even if it's not clicked in. I could've sworn that there were times where I was near the "click point" and it was still counting me as being centered.

What was messing me up was either stopping too soon or not letting go of the button at the end. If you're on Easy or Medium, I think you just hold down the button at the start of the section, continuously scratch until the end of the section, then let go of the button. I'm not sure whether it counts the number of scratches on Easy or Medium, but I tried to match the pace and rhythm of the audio and the visual cues, and I started getting more consistent with it my second time through the demo. I know that on Hard and Expert, they will actually require a specific number of scratches in specific directions.

If your local Best Buy doesn't have the demo, you might be in luck. Looks like a bunch of GameStops will have a demo this Sunday (the 11th):

I got word last night that my local BB will in fact have it set up today. ROCK OUT! I'm moving in!

Got to check it out tonight and I thought it was great. Didn't have a problem spinning with my thumb on the side and actually found myself using two fingers mainly over the three buttons. Not sure how practical that will be once you go up in difficulty, but it worked just fine for Medium. The fader is definitely going to be the speed bump, but I'm really excited to be starting on square one with something again. I played through each track a couple times and was already getting more use to stopping in the middle. I think that's just something that's going to come with practice and knowing the controller. I didn't know how I was going to feel about "No Fail" essentially always being on, but I think it'll be great. It really took the pressure off honestly.

Activision catches a lot of shit, especially with their Hero franchises, and especially from folks more "in the know" (I'm guilty 1000 times over), but I'm glad to see they're really offering up an whole new experience here. It's fresh, new, and seems like it's going to be fun as hell. And maybe most importantly, it doesn't feel like a money grab and something with HERO slapped on just to get people to buy another plastic non-instrument.

(I want that goddamn stand it's on too.)

From SD if you put in DJHERO10 at amazon you get 10 dollars off and another 10 dollar credit when it ships. Haven't tried it so i can't vouch for it.

It's cool that you guys are giving it thumbs up all around. My problem is I just can't justify the cost on this game, even with the coupons. Unless you got the 50% coupon from Amazon, this thing still seems wildly overpriced. (especially the "Renegade" edition even with that coupon)

I'm gonna have to wait for the clearance aisle.

Yeah, I just think this will drop in price pretty quickly and I know I can wait for that. Still, it was pretty cool to actually try out. I just don't have room for it in my family room.

My first reaction was that it was too expensive, but when you figure wireless controllers still being a $40-$50 SRP themselves, it's really not that far out of whack.

Tried this out at Best Buy today and it's amazing. The tracklist is phenomenal, but I didn't want to buy it and blaze through everything because of my familiarity with other rhythm games.

That wasn't a problem.

Even only being able to play on hard, my best stats from the 3-song set are:

Accuracy - 92%
High Score - 391670
Stars - 11/15

ELEVEN STARS. OUT OF FIFTEEN. ON HARD. Granted, BB's setup had lag and it weirded me out to play based on the screen instead of the audio, but it was still really challenging. I can't wait to try Expert!

The price hurts a bit, especially with Modern Warfare 2, Brutal Legend, etc. coming out fairly soon. Renegade Edition, however cool-looking, will not be purchased by me. I'll probably cop the regular ed. on release day and call in sick with some anal glaucoma.

Yeah, I just can't see my ass coming in to work on that day. Let me know if you wanna play some versus! Judging by your tag, I'd expect more than your current RB scores, though.

Nice write-up. Now I need to go try it at a demo station.

Re: The Official DJ Hero Thread of BPMs, Faders and Scratches

I played it for a third time at GameStop on Sunday, and the setup there seemed a bit better. Either that or I'm just getting more comfortable with the controller, since I got 10 stars for the set instead of 7 or 8.

FWIW, the setup at my Best Buy had a PS3 controller, and the Gamestop had a 360 controller. I specifically messed with the fader yesterday, and it definitely had a wide "dead zone" in the middle - in other words, it definitely would count the fader as being in the center position even if it hadn't clicked in. YMMV, but that was definitely what I experienced.

Awesome! Thanks for checking on that. It was one key thing that I didn't really get to play around with.

Re: The Official DJ Hero Thread of BPMs, Faders and Scratches

Yeah, if anyone else has a chance to mess around with it, you can futz with the fader at the beginning of a song before it actually starts. Just slide it back and forth and see when the display updates. When I tried that, it had a generous section that it considered "centered". I also don't know if the PS3 hardware is different from the 360 hardware.

God, I want this game so bad.

Thanks :)

I'll echo what Gramps said about the fader having a dead zone in the middle...at least on Medium it did, perhaps it gets more finicky as the difficulty goes up?

Re: The Official DJ Hero Thread of BPMs, Faders and Scratches

I played it again yesterday (and also did DJ/Guitar mode with the girlfriend) and paid a little extra attention to that as well and there is a "dead zone" on the fader but I felt it's pretty small, I feel it's pretty difficult to land it in that zone while pressing buttons and scratching, etc. There's a lack of tactile feedback, I guess, that makes it a pain in the ass. In my opinion, of course. What I mean is that there's a stop point on the left, there's a stop point on the right, so you can slide it while paying attention to everything else.

Anyway, I dig the game itself but I can't justify buying it based on the fact that's it's pretty much all rock music. If part 2 has a stronger electronica focus (and I wouldn't even care if it catered to my specific genre, just as long as it was SOME form of EDM) I'll have it pre-ordered as soon as that option was available.

Oh, yeah...I've only played on Medium. Perhaps that does factor into it?

Actually, I think it's got more of a focus on hip-hop than anything else, though it does have a lot of rock and a bit of electro/dance thrown in for good measure.
