What I heard is that the regular turntable is wired and the Renegade version is wireless. The Renegade edition also comes with a case that turns into a a stand for the turntable, plus an Eminem/Jay-Z soundtrack.

The wireless part is something I heard in a podcast - I can't find a good source for that, though. The rest of it is in the product descriptions at Amazon and Gamestop.

Also the controller is more metal less plastic. Looks awesome, but I'm not sure $80 more awesome. Although I love the case.

I'm pretty sure both versions are wireless.

Yeah, the differences look good, but not $80 good, especially when even the "basic" model is $120.

If it wasn't for that Amazon "trade in games and get 50% off any item" deal from a few months back, there's no way I would've been able to afford this game.

Could be. Perhaps the Giant Bomb guys were misinformed.

What I meant to say is it better be fuggin' wireless!

Okay, looks like you might be right, fro. On the official Guitar Hero store, both versions list "wireless connectivity" as a controller feature. It sounded strange when I heard it in the podcast, but I didn't think to follow up and look into it further.

I like the mashup bits I've heard so far, but looking at the patterns, I think there is literally no chance I could play this game. I'm too much of a klutz. I think I'll just keep saving to buy a Native Instruments Maschine instead.

They had a demo of this set up at my local Best Buy when I went there earlier today, so I just had to give it a whirl.....I went through the tutorial first (since I really had no idea how to play otherwise), then I played through the three song set it offered....I gotta tell ya, this was WAY more fun than I thought it was going to be! I think I'm going to ask for it for Xmas now, as the mashups sounded good and I was really getting into the whole cutting and scratching thing....also, the controller was surprisingly a lot more solid than I expected too....

Thanks for the heads up! I stopped by my local Best Buy and they had it set up. I went into the tutorials, but the TV was set to SUPER LOUD and the Grandmaster Flash dialogue was sort of embarrassing in public, so I skipped back and just jumped into a set on Medium.

There's definitely an adjustment period as you get used to the new controller and the onscreen user interface, but when you get into a groove, it's amazingly fun. If you don't like mashups and DJ culture, this probably won't win you over, but otherwise it seems like a winner.

The controller has a nice sturdy feel, though it's a little tricky to get the crossfader to settle into the center position reliably, and it's also kind of awkward to scratch using your ring finger on the right-hand button. Those quibbles may be resolved with sufficient practice, and I walked away from the demo even more excited for the game than I had been before. I'm even thinking of going back tonight to play it again.

Even if you're like me and you despise the Neversoft-produced Guitar Hero games, you should give DJ Hero a shot. It's made by a completely different developer, and it's different enough from the other music games out there to make it a unique experience. Can't wait for the 27th!

This is awesome. Thanks for the impressions! Really great to hear that stuff coming from someone that was already looking forward to it. I'll have to make a stop there soon and see if ours is setup as well. Before it gets broke that is.

As for using the controller...I always envisioned myself scratching with my thumb and my pointer, middle, ring fingers being used for the buttons. Is that doable? Maybe I'm way off on the setup, it's kind of hard to get a feel without actually doing it hands on with this kind of stuff.

You might be able to do that, but given the size of the "record" portion of the controller and where the buttons are placed, it might be a tight fit. Since you have to hold down either the leftmost or rightmost button while you scratch, it feels like bringing a thumb into the equation would be a little awkward.

I'm not sure though - I'm guessing that different people will use the controller in different ways given their personal preferences and what feels comfortable to them.

Do you have to hold one earpiece of a headphone set to your head the whole time?

Can other people around you text into the game to get shout-outs put on the screen for their friends to see?

I don't think you have to, but I don't know why you wouldn't want to.

I have confirmed my local BB will not be demoing DJ Hero. Cause they hate me.

I played it again last night, but I think that's it for me until I get the full game. The demo only has three mashups, and I don't want to wear those out.

Hey Gramps,

What level did you try at? Easy? Hard? I want to know where to start kicking your ass ;)

I played the demo too.

It's fun. I might be sold on the game but I have LESS THAN ZERO interest in the music, so it's hard to validate a purchase.

Oh yes, one FATAL flaw in the game.. or at least the demo. The cross-fader has to CLICK in the middle for it to register in the middle position. Anything slightly off of that will count as in the full left or full right position. It was pretty difficult getting it to stick in the middle during gameplay. Of course, this also works the EXACT opposite of how a real cross-fader works, heh.

Medium. Even at Medium, I was only getting 2 or 3 stars after two separate play sessions. I can't imagine jumping right into Hard.

For me it seemed to have a little bit of give if you were at least close to the center point, but it was hard to pay attention to that while playing the game, so I can't be 100% certain about it.
