The Official DJ Hero Thread of BPMs, Faders and Scratches

From the DJ Hero/Guitar Hero 5/Band Hero PR:

The company’s groundbreaking DJ Hero expands Guitar Hero’s signature social gaming to all-new consumers with the addition of diverse music genres including hip-hop, R&B, Motown, electronica and dance. Introducing an all-new innovative turntable controller, DJ Hero transforms players into DJs who rule the club scene by creating original mixes of popular songs and music from the world’s most exciting artists and DJs.
I guess this is a mock-up of the turntable controller:

I'm no DJ fan but I am really curious how this thing is going to work & play. Looks interesting and quite strange.

I'm VERY curious as well.. especially since different genres use turntables differently. Eletronica/Dance are mostly about beat-matching and cross-fading where Hip-Hop is more scratching and tricking. But I'm kind of doubting they're going to really represent either very well.

It'll probably just be Beatmania with popular American songs.

Spoiler:
Now why does that sound so familiar? rotfl

It looks like you hold down the button, and move the turntable / "scratch" to activate a corresponding color coded uniquely shaped note traveling down a highway.

The only recognizable song that comes to my mind that this would be fun playing along with is Rockit or similar songs of that era.

Only three buttons??

Good grief, even the DS GH games use four....

The controller has two pieces, this is only one of them.

The other piece is, of course, a cross-fader.

DJ Hero To Include Playable Guitar Sections:

Hmm.. I'm not sure on this. What's the point?

The track list is going to sell me or not. Watch it have Coldplay and Nirvana on it.

This looks a lot cooler.

From what we've seen of DJ Hero's turntable - and, granted, it's probably not all of it - it's got three buttons and a turntable. But what about rival DJ game Scratch's turntable?
As you can see here, in a marketing shot from earlier in the year that we've managed to get hold of (so things may have changed slightly since then), Scratch is not kidding around. Its got a "free-spinning, touch-sensitive turntable wheel", five coloured buttons and a small crossfader, all on a functional, if somewhat drab, hunk of grey plastic put together by (or at least licensed by) real turntable manufacturers Numark.
Also contained in the same document is a taste of the game's tracklist, which unlike Activision's messy attempts at covering all bases (which will probably please none), is targeting a specific audience: hip-hop and RnB fans. Eight songs were mentioned, and they are:
Flashing Lights – Kanye West
Let's Get It Started – The Black Eyed Peas
Peter Piper – Run DMC
Hot in Herre - Nelly
Milkshake – Kelis
Friends – Whodini
Party Like A Rockstar – Shop Boyz
Don't Sweat the Technique – Eric B. and Rakim
There are, at least in theory, supposed to be another 52 songs included in the final game (some licensed, others covers), which combined with the turntable will retail for $100. That is, if it's ever actually released...

Oh, never mind then.

At least that music suits the songs needed for a DJ game.

It's kinda like those people who bitch and moan that there isn't any R&B or Hip-hop on Rock Band & Guitar Hero.

I personally am waiting for Piano Hero so I can get my Barry Manilow groove on. :)

No, I agree with that, hip hop is a huge part of DJ culture and this was pretty much expected for an American based DJ game. I will just wait to see what DJ Hero's track list looks like (to see what the genre split is) and probably have to hold off until one of the two games does a specific trance/electronica set.

I could just grab the Vaseline and invest in a bunch of IIDX imports for PS2.

Or I guess the proper answer is to wait for Harmonix to do a DJ game, right?

So it's Beatmania with better visuals, different soundtrack and presumeably a less gruelling difficulty? Yeah, still not expecting much, though I don't particularly care for Beatmania to begin with.

Who knows? I don't think they've shown anything other than the controller mock-ups yet. I'd imagine that's probably a pretty good guess though, since that's pretty much what happened with Guitar Freaks/Guitar Hero.

Developed by Freestyle games.

1-2 players.

Turntable has two parts, the "platter" for the disc is the largest piece, it has three buttons on it, green, red and blue. The second piece, which is detachable to enable lefty mode, includes the face and directional buttons, a Euphoria button, an effects dial, and a crossfader.

Only three "scrolling" tracks, the outside two must be used with the crossfader in order to work.

Each track slides left and right to indicate the crossfader's direction.

Playing consistently will build up the Rewind Meter, which can be used to send the song back to an earlier section.

The tracks have up or down arrows showing which way to scratch the disc, and occasionally an X will be shown, letting the player scratch in either direction.

Tracks will have an overlay in some parts of a song, giving a player an opportunity to use the effects dial.

The Euphoria button is used to trigger Star Power.

Most of the game's songs will be unlocked at the beginning.

Freestyle microphone input is supported.

10 songs will support duet play with a guitar controller.

Those mixes sound pretty cool. Depending on the pricing and full tracklist (and the reviews), I might have to get this.

Billy Squire!? We finally get Billy Squire in these games and its DJHero?!

Well I guess its nice that you can play guitar in DJ Hero but it'd be much better in GH.

Re: The Official DJ Hero Thread of BPMs, Faders and Scratches

Looks like this one's going to be $120, according to GameStop. Don't see it selling very well at that price and with that soundtrack.

Seems that's the only way to get the game at all at this point as well. I'm sure it wouldn't be very great on a regular controller, but it could at least be workable.

UncleGramps 05-26-09 08:53 AM

Re: The Official DJ Hero Thread of BPMs, Faders and Scratches

I'm sure that we'll see a similar pattern to those we've seen with all "big box" releases (i.e., items that take up a lot of shelf space). Within 3 or 4 months, they'll be slashing prices trying to clear them out. At $120, there's no way I'd buy it. For $60 I probably would.

I would much rather have Keytar Hero. Bring on the 80s synth-pop!

Seriously all you jaded motherfuckers can suck it!

I can't wait for this fucking game. I want it NOW!

I think the controller is perfect actually. Not overly complicated, but still requires some coordination practice/skills.

As far as the soundtrack not selling the game, I take it that the folks stating such aren't big DJ or mashup fans/listeners. DJ Z-Trip, Girl Talk, Steve Aoki, etc...these guys do some amazing stuff with mashups and mixing of different genres. Looking at that list sounds awesome to me, but if you're not into that style of music making, then I can understand not thinking it would be that great. Now the question is will they be able to capture the fans of this music and get them to buy a game around it?
