Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
Got my first PlayStation 3 today and I setup the Internet and ran the system update, and an hour and half later it is still updating! Is this normal?
I can still see the hard drive light flashing, and when I look at the TV screen the clock is still working; does an update usually take this long? |

The progress bar is moving, yes?

I don't see any progress bar the only thing I see moving on the screen is the clock; the hard drive light is going as well. And yes it is still installing, or so it says!
I'll guess I'll let it run overnight.. Depending on the size of the update, the downloading process can take a long time. This is the biggest complaint people have about their systems. But the install itself shouldn't be taking forever. Can you see a way to cancel the process by pressing the circle button? |

Does it say installing or does it say downloading? For either one, there should be a progress bar indicating how far along in the process it is.

Anyway I got sick of wating and I turned it off and turned it back on and thankfully it came back up and everything seems to be OK. The update seems to have took as it says I don't need anymore updates. Thanks for everybodys help! |

I got a Harmony One remote for Christmas. Has anyone bought the official Logitech PS3 adapter? Does it work well? Power on and off etc? I have a few gift cards for Best Buy so I can get it pretty cheap.

As far as the PS3 adapter, I hear it works well, but I don't know. I like using the PS3 for one reason : If I'm doing one of those 20-30 minute downloaded updates, I can switch activities while keeping the PS3 on, allowing me to watch TV or play 360 while I update. It would be nice to get rid of my one other remote, but I can live with that. Either way, everyone will agree it was pretty retarded to make the most popular blu ray player without an IR port. |
Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
I bought one of those Nyko remotes a long time ago but I never used it. I think I'd rather have a full functional remote. The Nyko one doesn't control power on the PS3 far as I know. Based on all of the reviews I told my wife I wanted a Harmory One. It's pretty good so far. I haven't really played with it much but the quality is great and the setup was easy. I agree about switching activities, it shuts off one system when I switch to another, which I like. I think in the rare case where I want to keep the PS3 on and switch to another system I can do that through the device menu on the remote. Based on my initial impressions I would recommend the Harmony One. However it is pricey. My wife got it on sale at Best Buy for $149.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
Man, I'd love to buy it for that price. It's on sale for $199.99 at Best Buy and Amazon now. Since I'll be able to return the 720 to Costco (kept the box), It'll only cost me about $50 for the upgrade.

The game is 720p on the 360 also, it's just that the 360 upscales the 720p to 1080p.
To get your PS3 to do the same, in video set-up, uncheck 720p and it will upscale to 1080p. |

I'm happy to say that I got a PS3 for Christmas and have it all hooked and playing to The Beatles game. However, I have a quick question in regards to the PS Store. How are you able to log off completely from it? I logged in using the Beatles game and exited the Store but in my homepage, I can see my avatar for the PS Network. What am I missing here?

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
Thinking about getting a PS3 with Xmas GC's and money, etc... I was wondering how easy it is to put video files from my computer onto the PS3. I know how to convert and all that so I'm not worried about that. I was just wondering if it's as simple as putting videos on a flash drive and then putting them on the PS3 drive to watch at a later time.
I've tried googling this with varying results which is why I came here for a quick answer. Thanks. |
Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
It's extremely easy. You can use a flash drive, like you say, or you can stream them to your PS3. You can even copy them directly over your local network.

I love the HarmonyOne. I got it initially for my theater and just picked up another for the downstairs family room. If you wait, Best Buy will have it for $150. They do periodically. It does take some tweaking to get everything just the way you want it. Edstein, There is a choice in the setup for each DEVICE (I think it is under options) where you can setup up that device to turn off or not turn off when switching to another activity. |

Staying off-PS3 topic: anybody with the Harmony One have a TiVo too? I love my peanut remote, but if the One makes it easy to give up......

I read this in another thread and want to address it here incase others can chime in. My TV is either 480p or 1080i. I HAVE NO 720 available. Ive noticed that the PS3 only upscales SOME games to 1080i whereas other are downgraded to 480p. Most notably GTA4 looks like unfiltered shit. DVDs during playback are also downscaled to 480p. Now I have it connected with Component (the TV does not have HDMI), does this matter and should everything be upscaled? Its one of my biggest complaints with the PS3. It doesnt upscale everything! It truly keeps me from getting certain games.
My tv doesn't technically do 720 either, it upscales it 1080i. With GTA4, I ended up unchecking everything except 1080i in the PS3s video options, and that forces it into 1080i. The picture looked much better that way, but not sure if all games can do that. |

The PS network isn't just for the store. It's for playing online, updating the system, etc. It will automatically log you in every time you turn the system on, unless you turn that feature off. And I don't know if theres a way to manually log out either.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
My brother just got the yellow light of death of his PS3 last night (original 60GB version). He told me he has some family pictures and videos on there that are not backed up anywhere else. I told him he was stupid for not having that stuff backed up on something more reliable. Then I told him I'd try to find out if he can recover those videos. I have the same PS3 as him. Would I be able to simply swap hard drives with him so that we could pull that data off his hard drive with my working PS3? If not, is there another way we could do this?

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
Not sure if that'll work or not...but at the end of the day, it's just a laptop drive.
|
Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
No, the data is encrypted and tied to that specific PS3. When changing the drive, it will reformat it.
The only thing he can do is get the PS3 repaired ("re-flowed") by a third-party service. If going through Sony, there's a chance he would get a different system. |
