Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
I've always thought they should do something to poke fun at Microsoft's nickel and dime strategy and their reliability...
Sort of a "Sega Does What Nintendont" strategy. I miss the old console wars.
Are you paying fifty bucks a year to play online? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Did you pay a hundred bucks for Wi-Fi? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Did you pay two hundred bucks for a standalone Blu-Ray player? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Are you sending your console back for the fourth time? Definitely shoulda bought a PS3.

Yeah, that works in a forum post but when they came out of the gates this generation with the egos they had, I think that kind of marketing would have been just as bad as what they went with, possibly worse.

Except that that kind of marketing is for underdogs, Sony has never been an underdog. They have the best console this generation that will last for 10 years. So why bother with the inferior products.

thinking about buying the PS3 later this year since my wife hates our DVD player. compared to all the $250 models with BD Live and whatever, does the PS3 support them?

I don't know if it's still the case, but up until last year, the PS3 was the best Blu-ray player under $1K!

But I do agree that Sony acted like a bunch of douchebags early this generation.

You see this 'ad' on launch day:
Are you paying fifty bucks a year to play online? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Did you pay a hundred bucks for Wi-Fi? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Did you pay two hundred bucks for a standalone Blu-Ray player? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Are you sending your console back for the fourth time? Definitely shoulda bought a PS3.

Are you sending your console back for the fourth time? Definitely shoulda bought a PS3.
It may work now though, especially as a viral campaign.

Anyway, I think they've struck the right tone with the new ad, and "It only does everything." is pretty good turn of phrase.

And the consumer goes to the store and sees that $600 price tag and Sony gets laughed at and MS still gets the sale. $200 more than the competitor at launch and people were/are paying for all those things this 'supposed' ad claims you don't. I contend it wouldn't have worked.

Not to mention many people don't care about losing Wi-Fi. They either don't go online or just use a cable to hook it up.
Nintendo was actually kind of dumb to put Wi-Fi on their console. They could have charged the same $250 and left it off adding millions of dollars in profit. I doubt more than 10% of Wii owners go online.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
I saw one today at BB and have to admit that I wasn't impressed. It looks a lot cheaper than the original. Could be just the high gloss missing but it seemed to be lacking something that the old one has. Couldn't put my finger on it.
Did many people have an issue with the size of the fat? It never bothered me. All I ever heard bitching about was the price.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
The only issue I have with the FAT is the sound of my drive on the 60GB. It can whirl quite louad at times. I was thinking of selling my fully B/C 60GB as I have 0 PS2 games, but the premium on it is gone now. I MIGHT be able to break even for a slim...who knows though.
In either case, my PS3 barely fits in my stereo cabinet, but it does so there is no reason I can think of for me to get a slim.

fixed!
Well, at least the PS2 had a high-end option:
