Too bad Don Draper is a fictional character. He could sell a billion PS3s.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

I've always thought they should do something to poke fun at Microsoft's nickel and dime strategy and their reliability...

Are you paying fifty bucks a year to play online? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Did you pay a hundred bucks for Wi-Fi? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Did you pay two hundred bucks for a standalone Blu-Ray player? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Are you sending your console back for the fourth time? Definitely shoulda bought a PS3.
Sort of a "Sega Does What Nintendont" strategy. I miss the old console wars.

Yeah, that works in a forum post but when they came out of the gates this generation with the egos they had, I think that kind of marketing would have been just as bad as what they went with, possibly worse.

Except that that kind of marketing is for underdogs, Sony has never been an underdog. They have the best console this generation that will last for 10 years. So why bother with the inferior products.

thinking about buying the PS3 later this year since my wife hates our DVD player. compared to all the $250 models with BD Live and whatever, does the PS3 support them?

Up until now the PS3 has been the best Blu-ray player. There should a better Blu-rayplayer for high end equipment, but for the rest of the people the PS3 is the best option. Of course there will come the time when there's a $200 Blu-ray player that's a better option, if the PS3 hardware is not updated.

I don't know if it's still the case, but up until last year, the PS3 was the best Blu-ray player under $1K!

I totally agree. I never play PS3 on anything but my PS3.

Well, at least the PS2 had a high-end option:

I disagree. If this generation has taught us anything it's that "internet people" mean nothing in terms of market share and public perception.

But I do agree that Sony acted like a bunch of douchebags early this generation.

You mean that Freaks and Geeks and Firefly aren't ADORED by the general public?

No but price is King.

You see this 'ad' on launch day:
Are you paying fifty bucks a year to play online? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Did you pay a hundred bucks for Wi-Fi? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Did you pay two hundred bucks for a standalone Blu-Ray player? Shoulda bought a PS3.
Are you sending your console back for the fourth time? Definitely shoulda bought a PS3.
And the consumer goes to the store and sees that $600 price tag and Sony gets laughed at and MS still gets the sale. $200 more than the competitor at launch and people were/are paying for all those things this 'supposed' ad claims you don't. I contend it wouldn't have worked.

It may work now though, especially as a viral campaign.

Don't forget that smash success, Snakes on a Plane.

Anyway, I think they've struck the right tone with the new ad, and "It only does everything." is pretty good turn of phrase.

This was a big topic of discussion on a recent video game podcast I listened to where they were arguing how smart Microsoft was to have an Arcade model and to leave out stuff like Wi-Fi to stay cheaper than Sony. Basically the general buyer doesn't care about the accessories they will have to buy down the road for their 360. It might end up costing more in the long run, but right now the guy only has $200 to buy a console so he is buying the 360 and he will get the other stuff later.

Not to mention many people don't care about losing Wi-Fi. They either don't go online or just use a cable to hook it up.

Nintendo was actually kind of dumb to put Wi-Fi on their console. They could have charged the same $250 and left it off adding millions of dollars in profit. I doubt more than 10% of Wii owners go online.

Yes, it was released in Japan in 2003. The price was about $720 for the 160GB model and $880 for the 250GB version.

Did many people have an issue with the size of the fat? It never bothered me. All I ever heard bitching about was the price.
The only issue I have with the FAT is the sound of my drive on the 60GB. It can whirl quite louad at times. I was thinking of selling my fully B/C 60GB as I have 0 PS2 games, but the premium on it is gone now. I MIGHT be able to break even for a slim...who knows though.

I read people complaining about the noice of their 60 GB, and either I'm lucky or half-deaf. My kids are watching a BR right now and I literally have to put my ear down low, right near the PS3 to hear any noise from it. Often it'll be on for hours accidentially before I look and see that the blue light is on and I turn it off.

In either case, my PS3 barely fits in my stereo cabinet, but it does so there is no reason I can think of for me to get a slim.
