Hmmm. And here I thought "learnt" was a southern thing.

I'm also happy to hear about the background patch download.

Just fix the .vob file support that was crippled in the last update and I'll be a happy camper.

As long as they don't force me into Home as the default GUI, I'm open to anything.

I haven't played a .vob file in a while, but what did the last update do to them?

And here here, to patches updating in the background.

The last update caused the system to dramatically slow down in recognizing .vob files on an attached harddrive. It now takes literally 10-20 seconds for the system to recognize an individual .vob file and display it in the directory listing. Not too bad if there are only a handful. But when there are 70-80 in a single directory it can take 15-20 minutes to populate the listing. Once listed the files play back fine though.

Some PS3 websurfers have reported that, as of this morning, they're no longer able to play Hulu videos. Engadget dug through the Hulu TOS and thinks it knows why.

The PS3 had access to Hulu thanks to the console browser's flash support, leading some to wonder if this was a glitch or a block caused by the firmware. But do not adjust your set, reports Engadget:

The Hulu TOS was just updated as of June 26, and although we haven't found any PS3-specific passages, changing a browser's user-string to match the console reveals it is definitely being specifically blocked.

What's this shit I'm hearing about Sony making Home an essential requirement for future PS3 games?

Are they fucking kidding?

I agree with this guy [at around 1:11]

It sounds like they're just going to require that games support launching from within Home. It's only important for those who use Home on a regular basis (show of hands?), and would like to just launch a game from within there. It's not as if someone who just wants to play a game is going to start up Home first.

"There’s more. Simultaneous HDMI and digital optical outputting will be included in the release, a move likely to bring big smiles to the audio heads in the crowd."
That will be nice. It's kind of silly that the PS3 never did that in the first place.

Thanks

I just noticed yesterday that they seemed to have finally fixed this with the latest firmware. The controller I powered on the system with was #1, and the Rock Band dongle was #7.

Definitely still an issue I am seeing ... the only thing I have plugged in is the Buzz! Wireless dongle, and the controller I turn on the system with keeps coming up as Controller #2.

Yes, I am running the latest firmware.

Turned on my PS3 yesterday and it defaulted to #4. You sure the system wasn't already on?

Positive. I've turned it on a couple more times since I first noticed it, and it's been consistent.

I'm pretty sure it's been happening since the firmware upgrade, it just took me a few times to notice because I don't always need to reassign the controller ... some games don't care if it's in slot 2. I guess it could be some other random thing that's making it work, but the firmware is the only thing I can think of that's changed.

I'm pretty sure this is so Sony can be able to sell everyone with a PS3 old PSX/PS2 games for download.

The one time I want to actually go into the PSN and download something, I get an error message because it's down.

I guess you really do get what you pay for. I'm heading to my 360, instead.

Home...what a joke. I'm surprised anyone uses Home. I downloaded it to see what it was and deleted it 15 minutes later.

Makes you wonder if it will allow disc based games to work or if they'll still have some kind of block forcing you to buy the d/l versions.

Now I know you're the biggest PS3 fanboy on this forum, so I'll put this in a way that you can understand from my perspective...

XBL - has never been down when I've wanted to play or download something.
PSN - the one time I decide I want to download something, is down.

So if Live does go down, it's probably in the wee hours of the morning. Not at 9am.

I doubt they'd do that - even for Sony, it would be the dick-move of all dick-moves and would piss off way too many people.

Live was down for maintenance most of the day a couple of weeks ago on June 16.

Apparently I didn't turn my XBox on June 16th.

However, I did turn my PS3 on today.
