I think it's making a memory solution a little cheaper than they would like.

Does this also include using flash drives to run video content?

No, it is only for the memory cards, not anything via the from panel usb.

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

Damn. I bought a used HDD to save some money and it ended up being a modded drive. Looks completely legit, but I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work with Xbox1 games. Did some research and discovered my drive was a bootleg 120GB. Works perfectly fine except for that, but with this update it looks like that was $60 down the drain. Oh well, time to move everything back to the 20GB. At least this gives me incentive to not buy any more content on XBL since my 20GB was full. I refuse to drop $130 for an official one.

Um, I might be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure you CAN'T move info from a 120 to a 60 or 20 -- only to a larger or identical drive. You might be stuck having to buy an official 120 GB one, or else back up your game saves and XBL profile to an official memory unit and re-download everything else.

Wait! Stop! I had the same exact thing happen to me, ordering an "official" drive off ebay. But I was able to fix it.

All you need is a transfer cable. And then download the hd kits off the internet and format the drive. It took me about an hour in total to do it (made a few mistakes first few tries) and had to do it with my WinXP computer.

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

Why does it change the Win XP to ShittyP?

Also, you should be able to back everything up to your computer before you format and then copy it back onto the drive once you're done.

But basically what happened was that when they made your fake drive they forgot to put the Xbox original root file on there, that's why you can't play Xbox games (I found this all out when I tried to play Fable 1).

Hmm, I got my drive off eBay, guess I need to see if Xbox games work on it.

I really want to upgrade my 20 GB to a 120, but I refuse to pay $135+ on principle.

If they don't, you can fix it using a transfer kit.

Hmm, tried Halo and Halo 2 last night and they both work fine. Does that mean I'm in the clear? I guess I should back up whatever saves I can just in case. sigh... fucking modders.

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

I don't think that they're going to be banning HDDs. MajorNelson specifically says that
unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360
They are more than likely targetting those MUs that are actually just a MicroSD card in a standard-style MU housing, like this.

Those of you who bought the cheap 120GB drives off of eBay are probably in the clear and are just spreading FUD.

true, but who saw this move coming? is it only a matter of time until MS decides that unofficial hard drives are problematic and decides to ban them too?

I don't have a transfer cable so this was how I moved everything to the 120GB one. My 20GB still has most of my files except for the few that have to be moved because they don't allow copying. I have all my profiles and saves back on my MU. So if Microsoft kills the HDD with the update I will only lose stuff I can redownload.

I know some people think this only is for memory cards, but knowing MS this will kill these HDDs as well. There has to be a way MS can tell they are not legit. The weird thing about mine is it looks completely real with the 120GB logo and everything. If it wasn't for the Xbox 1 thing and really looking closely at the torx screws I would never have known it was fake. I've thought about emailing the guy that sold it to me, but it probably isn't worth it for $60. You only pay $60 for something that sells for $130 you have to expect something like this. Lesson learned.

Of course there is. Virtually all of the cloned HDDs have the same internal serial number on them. I'm sure they could just ban "that one drive" and it would take care of 90+% of the 'fake' drives out there.

Like you said, paying half-price for something off of eBay or other auction house, you're almost guaranteed to be getting into some shady waters. I was lucky enough to get a legit 120GB drive as a X-Mas present shortly after they were released, so at least I know I'm safe.

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

Well, congrats. You all made me so paranoid about the HDD I bought off ebay last fall that I broke out my copy of Halo for the first time in six years. It works, so I guess I'm okay.

In other news, I just noticed that there's a new featured area called "Coming Soon". It tells of this week's upcoming XBLA games and some DLC that I think is out already (at least for the PS3) for Dirt. What I found interesting is that a University Collection for the Avatars is coming. Like many of you, I've never been a fan of buying clothes and stuff for an avatar, but if they represent the Big 12 (and keep things reasonable), at least pinata and I will be making purchases there.

Yeah I popped in Halo 1 & 2 and despite playing 3 other games after that they remain at the top of my recently played list.

Looks like the new update will break out the music add-ons to a music store, and allow for previews right there.

Good news for us, but not what Pixy wants since it likely won't clean up the common area on the dash or the website.

I wish they would fix the notifications option. There are some games where i want the achievments to pop up, but I dont want to be constantly notified of who's on Live at the moment. They need to have those two options separated.

Yep. I've been wanting that for a while. There should be two options:
1. Friend Notification - on/off
2. Achievement Notification - on/off

Then they can lose the "show during videos" option since the above two would cover everything.
