Ditto. Plus it's my absolute favorite guitar solo in the game, so I'm down!

Gotta love how lurkers who never post feel compelled for some reason to compete. I guess they simply want to see their name be at the #1 spot.

Howdy...yep, long time lurker, first time poster (well, seems like it anyway). I like to keep up with the rb news here in this thread, but don't typically check in every day, so I don't bother posting. I'll try to change that.

Fun fact about my submitted scores - I typically play expert drums, but found that on Clouds of California I scored significantly higher in hard mode than expert. (~20,000 points higher if I remember correctly). Much harder to keep a streak with the flurry of notes in the expert version!

Looking forward to the Alive challenge...we'll see if I can defend the top spot now that I have to sing and play guitar too :)

FWIW, I recognized your name from the little bit of time I messed with the auditions thread.

Though knowing there are potentially countless people out there watching us makes me feel all self-conscious. Like I should put on some pants.

Yes. I thought everybody knew Kevad because of that thread. How can you forget the other guy with a PS3?

Why does it matter if they don't post or not? They've just as much right as the rest of us to compete.

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread

Shag, can you factor in our post counts as a weighted average or something?

final score = combined score * (1 + (number of posts on dvdtalk / sum of all posts of participants)).

I think that would give me a much-earned edge.

It just seems odd. I mean, at least its interesting to see how we rank up with each other, since we "talk" to each other on the forum. But with some of these guys, they are basically forum strangers, so its no different then seeing how we would rank on the public leaderboards or something.

I'm probably off base on this, but I just find it kind of odd. Especially if we do a Top 5 and all 5 of them are lurkers, that just makes it even more pointless.

Guys, guys. Don't worry about it. We're all winners here :grouphug:

Spoiler:
unless you play the Wii version

I still think there should be some type of perk if you play at a higher level.. keeps people from sandbagging. :p

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread

The perk of playing at a higher level is that you (usually) get a higher score.

I toyed with the idea of minimum post numbers, but I didn't realize that we had a bunch of "lurkers" around. They're still members, they're just not active members of the community. I wish they were, as more participants in the conversations we have is always nice.

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread

I agree. For a competition that has no prize other than pride, I don't see why having lurkers participate is a problem. For those that are bothered, just mentally remove any names you don't recognize from the Top 5 list. ;)

:D2:

The one other guy I know with a PS3 and I went to a Rock Band 2 party/competition, and named ourselves "The Unfortunate PS3 Owners". That was in that 30 day span between the 360 version release and the PS3 release, so we were trying to win some sympathy points! (Didn't work...we still sucked :))

Alas, I remember those days well. I wallowed in self-pity until Locksley came and made everything right with the world.

Okay bitches I just ordered a replacement cymbal for my crappy GH drums. You guys are toast. :D

ETA: Last time I checked the folks on eBay wanted $25 per cymbal - good to know they've dropped in price as low as $8.

Sorry if I ruined the fun for the regulars. I didn't enter it to win or to see my name on the leaderboards, but just for the challenge. (Not many of these type of contests include PS3 players!) While I don't post much, I have read every post in these official rock band threads over the past 1.5 years and do feel like I know you guys. I'll try to start posting more so the reverse will be true...

Dude, there's no need to defend yourself at all. IMHO the more the merrier.

Yep, definitely no problems in my eyes. I think flashburn and I just thought it was odd to see names up there in the "Top 5" that we had never seen before.

I was mostly just curious if the names listed were their DVD Talk names or Live/PSN names?

You must defend yourself from everything around here! Also we require you to get your # of posts per day average up to at least 2, which means you've got your work cut out for you. ;)

I didn't submit scores for this challenge, but if I had my score would have been ~314k. I FC'd Alabama Getaway on bass and scored 129k on expert guitar. I am picking up RB on my way home from work today so I can actually compete in any future contests that require those songs.

coulda woulda shoulda... as it stands your score was a nice big fat zero. :p

ETA if you're a fan of the dreaded alt-strum machine gun style a la One or Master Exploder, Clouds over California is a great chart. Props to Shag and these challenges because otherwise I would have never downloaded it.

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread

I'll admit it - I'm a lurker. Although I enjoy reading what everyone has to say (aside from the occasional hyperspeed argument), I don't really feel I've got anything to add to the conversation. By the time I read most threads, someone has normally already thrown out the same two cents I would have, and I personally don't feel it adds much to throw an "I agree!" to the mix. I had fun participating in a few of the Reverse Sheep threads recently, but now that I think of it, I may have been more of a lurker there as well.

All that said, I'm glad I've been able to participate in these challenges. I was messing around on gamebattles.com for a while until I got tired of the b.s. over there, and I've always kind of wondered how everyone here on dvdtalk stacked up against each other - especially since us PS3 types can't battle it out on the same network with you 360 types.

I purchased Clouds Over California specifically for this challenge (Mississippi Queen just wasn't giving me more than 69k on guitar). I told Shag when I submitted my scores that I wasn't sure if I liked the song or not, but I guess now it'll always have a special place in my heart because it helped me reach the TOP 5! Of course, that puts me in the middle of the pack like most of the Battle Of The Band challenges, but at least my name is out there now...

I wish I could do the name battle, but stupid RB uses the cover version of Tom Sawyer. -ohbfrank-
