Just some info...

News: You can only buy Best Buy Gamer's Club Unlocked in Store Now. The reason is because it wouldn't activate immediately on their website and they had too many customers calling in and complaining. Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
I re-upped online about six weeks ago and had that issue. Kind of annoying. All they needed to do was be more informative during the process. I got no emails alerting me to activation. The only correspondence was my initial "order confirmation." I didn't think to check it until a week later to see if it was working.

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
Oh shit, GCU is dead. No new memberships or renewals.
|
Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
RIP GCU.
I'm sure Amazon will follow suit with their preorder discount soon enough too. I'm good till next May, but I guess I'll need to go into a preorder frenzy next Spring. (The discount is based on when you place the order, not when it's supposed to ship, right?) |
Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
Fuck that sucks ass. I think I am good through 2020 iirc. Still was a great perk.
Edit: yeah I am good through May 23, 2020. Fuckers won back my business from Amazon for games. Now back to Amazon I shall go! |
Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
OMG. This is big. RIP, me buying new games on impulse.

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
I just went in a store and tried the GUC card and it won't scan either. It's officially dead. :(
He said they killed it this afternoon. Oh well, it was awesome while it lasted. I have about 18 months left on my membership. |
Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
 Oh shit. That sucks ass. Guess I re-upped just in time.
|
Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
Thanks to GCU just getting me in the door, I'd actually shifted a lot of my non-gaming purchases (movies/electronics/appliances) away from Amazon and back to Best Buy. Doubt that continues once my GCU subscription runs out.

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
I'm only good through November. Oh well.

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
Dumb move by Best Buy. They’ll lose a lot of gamer business.
|
Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
I'd like to hear more on the reasoning. I always liked comparing the different Pre-Order Bonuses among the retailers selling a game...a lot of the time I went with BB. We got Amazon Prime several months back when we cord-cutted DirectTV and I can get the 20% off on games. But I do think they'll lose some gamers on this unless they just start running sales & pre-order bonus offers alone.

I switched from buying my new release games from amazon to Best Buy back when the GCU price dropped. I preorder games off their website, do in store pickup (since one is a block from my house), and when I arrive I just go straight to the pickup counter and leave. Having GCU has never made it more likely that I was going to walk around and buy other stuff. This is probably the way the majority of people with GCU shop (although most probably never even step foot in the store) and it's an unsustainable way for them to make money. |

In case anyone was unaware. Games typically cost Best Buy between $45-47 a piece so they were already making almost nothing on any game sold with GCU. In fact, first party Nintendo games actually cost $48 so they are already losing a penny on all of those plus whatever it costs to ship them. |
Re: The Video Game Deals Thread
Even if that's true, they aren't making any money on GCU sales, and if you're stacking them with pre-order bonuses, that puts them back in the negative, unless you're buying other stuff, which most GCU customers probably aren't.
