I can't name most of them, but I enjoy quite a few. Will pick up on release day for sure.

To continue the discussion that started in the RB thread:

While I think more RB/GH players know and love The Beatles more than some posters here would like to believe, I think that the game will provide a great opportunity for Beatles fans to interact with their music in new ways, and for Beatles neophytes to get exposed to the fantastic and timeless music The Beatles made.

I was watching Helter Skelter tonight (the 2004 one with Jeremy Davies) and I would love it if that song made it in. I highly doubt it because of its now infamous background, but it sounded like it'd have a pretty rockin' guitar chart.

I think that is a likely outcome.

I know there was a story recently that I read about discussing how Rock Band and Guitar Hero is introducing many classic rock and older artists to the younger generation now a days.. Artists that before these games the kids never heard and now that they have played it in the games, they are picking up cds and seeking out more music from those artists.

That's a little different though, since someone who already has RB is going to end up playing them since they're on the disc. It would be a harder sell to purchase a ~$60 game of a band they may only know a little about. I'm not sure many people "discovered" Aerosmith by just buying the game blindly.

I don't know about that, but Steven Tyler recently said that the band made more money on the game than they did on their last album release.

Right, Activision boss Bobby Kotick actually said it's generated more revenue for the band then any of their albums. But I assume that's based more on licensing of the songs and the higher cost of the game versus a $10 CD. I think it would be hard to say how many people bought it as fans or their interest in the band, although I'm sure people have purchased the set for the convenience of an extra guitar as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that only fans will buy this or anything. Just that I think any band specific games don't really attract that many folks that know little about them.

Does MJ still own any of the rights to the Beatles? Would be funny if this got him of bankruptcy.

re: The Beatles: Rock Band - Available on Revolution #9-9-09

I looked it up, and it appears that Jackson still does have partial ownership of the Beatles catalog. There are a lot of articles from 2007 saying that he is going to have to sell them, but no articles from any later date saying that he did sell them. I did find an article where McCartney said the rights were going to revert back to him at some point, I'm not sure how that one works out (McCartney, by the way, is the one who turned Jacko on to the lucrative business of owning publishing rights--he owns most of, if not all of Buddy Holly's songs).

Jackson's purchase of the publishing rights to the Beatles' songs gave him 50% of the profits from the use of the songs. The other 50% always go to the songwriters or their estate. In 1995 he merged the catalog with Sony, so at this point he only gets a portion of that 50%. It is possible that this game could pull him out of his financial troubles, but his troubles may not be so bad if I can't find any info on him actually selling the Beatles song rights.

I guess it really depends on what you grew up listening to.

I went: Hair Metal -> Gangster Rap -> Extreme Metal -> Most Everything.

I've just never taken the time to look into the Beatles, as I've got more than enough music to really keep me busy for a lifetime. I'll definitely be buying this title day one though, and it might expand my genre selections just a little bit more.

I went: Hair Metal (pre-teen) -> Gangster Rap (early teens) -> Extreme Metal (mid to late teens) -> Most Everything (20s+).

If you listen to "mostly everything" and can't name more than a couple of Beatles songs, I would amend that statement.

I really don't want to disparage anyone who says they don't know any Beatles songs... but you do. Maybe you don't know you do, but you do. You know a ton of them. They're covered like crazy, they're in movies, commercials, they're EVERYWHERE.

I guess by most everything, I meant varied. I know next to nothing about modern pop, R&B, hip-hop, rap, country, and probably a couple other genres.

However, I do listen to such varied things as lots of metal (progressive, death, black, etc) to EBM, alternative, stuff like Depeche Mode or Bjork, throw in some Tori Amos as well. So I do have broad enough tastes to appreciate almost anything at some level, it's just that I haven't had the exposure to it. My parents weren't Beatles fans and none of my friends have ever been (that I'm aware of).

That's why I pointed out that I can't really name Beatles songs, but can recognize and like quite a few of them

That means absolutely nothing. That means that I may have heard a Beatles tune somewhere. That doesn't mean I "know" the song. Like I said, I can name just a couple Beatles tracks (throw in Revolution No. 9, since I just watched Helter Skelter). I might be able to say "Yeah, I've heard that before," but I would have no fucking clue if it was the Beatles or not.

Now ask me to name 10 Monkees song and I've got you covered.

Not really, since listening to "mostly everything" in the 2000's doesn't necessarily mean The Beatles would come up frequently in anyone's rotation.

Yup, that's why I had said the same. Hearing a song and recognizing it is different from being able to name a bunch of songs off the top of your head

re: The Beatles: Rock Band - Available on Revolution #9-9-09

General query:

If you don't know many Beatles songs AND you're interested in this game, it must just because you're a fan of the game genre and/or Harmonix. There's nothing wrong with that and anything that can get you into the music is a good thing, imo.

So the question I have is: Are you going to spend some time over the next 8, 9, or 10 months to familiarize yourself with the catalog or are you going to wait for the game to do that? (Or split the difference and only listen to the confirmed songs ahead of time).

No, what I mean is that you know the songs, and probably pretty well too. You just don't that they were Beatles songs. Maybe you know a famous cover version and always thought it was that artist's song (Joe Cocker's version of A Little Help From My Friends, the theme from The Wonder Years, for example).
