No one remembers the Crash versus Nintendo commercials? Where they had a big guy in a Crash suit yelling outside Nintendo headquarters calling out Mario? Come on...

I remember that but it was more funny than controversial

I feel like a moron after seeing all of those. I remember every one of them, but couldn't when it came time to answer.

It's not from this decade, so it doesn't count anyway. But if you want my opinion, it's a better answer to "controversial ad, promotion, or campaign" than many of the answers.

Alright, well it seems the ones in question are:

  • HD doesn't start until we say it does
  • The PS2 can do Toy Story in real time
  • LBP Recall
  • The Entire PS3 Campaign

Let's make this simple. Let me know (by posting here) if those answer should count as unique or wrong. For the time being, pinata242, Jeremy517, BlueCC, Imprint, and FatTony will have Barry-Bonds-style asterisks after their score.

Answer, say, before 1PM EST. And that's what we'll go with.

I say every answer different from mine counts as wrong.

All kidding aside, LBP recall doesn't seem like an ad, promotion, or campaign. The rest qualify as ads, promotions, or campaigns, but I couldn't tell you if they generated controversy. I never heard of the first two, and I don't think there was anything controversial about the PS3 campaign (as opposed to the timing and price-point), but I wasn't very plugged into video games for most of this decade, so maybe there was controversy and I just missed it.

I can't really defend mine anymore than the general "lol wut?" reaction of the HD community on the net and here (the HD forum, specifically). Controversy? Maybe not, but it was certainly a folly of PR, of which Sony has had in spades lately.

From: Formerly known as "orangecrush18" - still legal though
ad, promotion or campaign
  • HD doesn't start until we say it does

    - Was not an ad, promotion or campaign.

  • The PS2 can do Toy Story in real time

    - Was not an ad, promotion or campaign. (and possiblly never actually said by Sony)

  • LBP Recall

-This was defiantly controversial, but it was not an ad, promotion or campaign.

  • The Entire PS3 Campaign

    - This is entirely too broad to count.

When something is said by a company executive in a public forum what is that called? I guess I don't know where the line between PR and "promotion" is drawn.

HD War should count because of what pinata242 said.

LBP should count because it was a campaign "2 : a connected series of operations designed to bring about a particular result"

Entire Campaign does seem to broad, but it is still a campaign

I don't know anything about the Toy Story thing.

Basically, anything public they do is advertising in some way, I suppose.
