Can someone briefly explain what controversy each of those generated? I've never heard of most of them (though I will admit I don't really follow Sony's marketing).

I don't recall some of those generating a lot of controversy. Citing "everything" doesn't seem like it should count, and I don't remember any controversy around that baby commercial other then it just being weird.

Although I couldn't think of anything at the moment so whatever

The E3 2006 presentation was a disaster for Sony because nobody but nobody wanted to pay $599 for a PS3. And the presentation didn't show anything interesting, plus all the games looked like crap. Compare that to the Wii's, or the 360s which had Mass Effect, Bioshock, etc. around the corner.

All I Want for Christmas is a PSP was a terrible fake viral video along with a "alliwantforchristmasisapsp.com" blog about someone who wanted a PSP. Gave us headlines like: Sony marketers are horrible liars, pretend to run fansite.

The baby and golfers commercials should be pretty self-explanatory. The baby one wasn't shocking, but it was a stupid and slightly weird way to start your big advertising campaign.

God of War Goat: "Oh, Sony, when will you learn? The UK's Daily Mail is reporting that Sony has created an uproar with a photo from their official magazine, showing a burly man wearing fur, a topless girl wearing body paint and no pasties, and a mostly decapitated goat. It's the goat that's got everyone's ... goat. During a release party for God of War II in Athens, attendees were invited to reach into the head-hanging-on-by-a-thread goat and eat still-warm intestines (as it turns out, the offal was procured elsewhere and stuffed inside of the goat). Yum!"

LittleBigPlanet was recalled worldwide due to some lyrics in one of the songs in the game that had a line from the Quran. LBP was easily one of the most awaited game for the PS3, and the delay certainly hurt sales. And this was all over a song that they knew would be in a game by an artist who is Muslim.

"Coming on the heels of widely publicized news that Sony music CDs infected customers' computers with security-hole-inducing spyware, the campaign for the PlayStation Portable is being derided on the internet as an attempt to buy the credibility of street art." Sony decided to actually deface communities to get the word out about the PSP.

When a new color of PSP was introduced, the ads seemed to be racially charged.

Basically, from about mid-2005 to sometime in 2007, Sony couldn't do anything right.

I always erred on the side of caution, even if the answer was a bit broad or inexact.

I think you missed me on the first question. I had MGS PS3 also.

The second one, I guess I get zero? I wasn't listed as a wrong answer.

I missed you somewhere. I need to update the Round 1 scores again.

Also, check my post about the sheep.exe you sent me. It wasn't working. Do I need to DL any runtimes?

Chris_D: Metal Gear 20th Anniversary
That's not a Metal Gear game. It's a repackage of a bunch of Metal Gear names. That would be like asking me to name a Star Wars movie and I answer "The Original Trilogy."

So Chris_D gets a point for every duplicate answer for:
  • Metal Gear [PS2]
  • Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake [PS2]
  • Metal Gear Solid [PS]
  • Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Libery [PS2]
  • Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater [PS2]
  • Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops

Well played... well played.

Yeah, seriously...that should not be a unique answer.

For Chris_D's, I know of no such thing and couldn't find any information on it. If there is indeed a special version of the PS2 hardware that was released for FFX, let me know.
Ah, it was the PS2 I bought in Australia. To be honest the hardware was the standard black issue, but the box was emblazoned in the FFX logo and main character. So I guess I misread the question and was also thinking of official game pack-ins as being a separate console release.

Well, I totally misread #2. I was thinking the IGN comment meant controversy picked up by media outside the gaming industry. Also, I'm pretty surprised things like the E3 debacle or toy story comment count in that one. I don't see how a press conference/presentation constitutes an ad, campaign or promotion.

A press conference is all about promoting your own products.

Sweet! I only answered with the E3 presentation because it was mentioned in a later question.

So's a press release, but it's not a promotion. A promotion is something like sticking a free Blu-Ray or game in the box. The Little Big Planet one is a bad answer too. There was nothing controversial about anything they did to advertise or promote that game. Some people seemed to take the question as 'name something stupid Sony's done' and the answers are mostly being accepted. It doesn't really matter to me as I've got no chance with this round, but it doesn't seem fair to those that provided correct answers and might have a chance of winning.
