Re: EGM is near death.

Well this certainly sucks. They will be missed. Like the GameSpot crew and Dan Shoe moving on, I doubt this is the last we'll see of some of them. Shane & Garnett will certainly make the rounds.

It really blows that there is no farewell show. Pretty lame on UGO's part.

Re: EGM is near death.

The saddest thing is that in many ways they went out with a whimper and not a bang. Milkman said that a last issue was made; I'm curious to see how it's distributed / labeled.

Re: EGM is near death.

Holy fucking shit.

This is pretty goddamn horrible. The 1UP crew/podcasts were a huge inspiration for my greatly increased interest in gaming over the past 3 years. This is really depressing.

Re: EGM is near death.

This is really sad news. EGM was really the only gaming magazine I read. And 1upyours was one of my favorite podcasts.

I just hope the people I enjoyed on the various 1up podcasts continue the work elsewhere. It really doesn't matter if it's at 1up.

Re: EGM is near death.

This may be a stupid question, but is there any way to acquire all of the podcast entries for 1upyours at once rather than downloading them one at a time? I tried the RSS feed, but that only allowed me to download the most recent 10 or so entries.

Re: EGM is near death.

Very horrible news. It could mean a similar fate to at least a few more gaming mags out there.

Re: EGM is near death.

With Video Game news, previews, reviews all over the Internet, it's not a shocker at all that this Magazine and others will go out of business. It's sad, but it's the reality of the modern times we live in now.

Re: EGM is near death.

I just got back home from Phoenix and was checking my twitter when I saw posts on this by Shawn and Garnett. Extremely dissapointed about the podcasts, and I'll feel pretty shitty for everyone who lost their job. UGO, by shitcanning all the podcasters, has ensured that I have no reason to ever visit their site. Quality move there.

Re: EGM is near death.

I enjoyed the magazine but i can understand print dying - but why they would axe the podcast folks when that is the only thing that drives me to the website is beyond me.

Now i have nothing to listen to at work. I must find another video game podcast.

Re: EGM is near death.

Very sad news. Sure, it's not as good as it used to be but I always looked foward to getting my copy in the mail each month. It's a sad day when EGM is dead yet Gamepro is still around.

Re: EGM is near death.

Looking back at the list, it appears Garnett survived the firings. I wonder if he will be tasked with getting a UGO podcast going (with Wombat?). That wouldn't even seem right after they fired everyone he had on the 1up show.

Maybe he will bring people back as guest hosts?

Hopefully a bunch of them go with Shoe and write for Crispy Gamer. I just subscribed to their podcast and hope it is decent.

That's the first thing I thought when I read about all this. I bet Shoe got more than a few phone calls that day.

Thanks for the heads up on Crispy Gamer. I didn't know Shoe had a show going. Looks like I need to give Giant Bombcast a second chance to fill the gap.

Re: EGM is near death.

Well i just subscribed - so i don't know if he is on it or not. It is called Blazing Prattles (according to iTunes) and it appears there are only 15 episodes and the newest was in October.

I need a weekly video game podcast to listen to on my plan period at work. I can't be expected to grade without podcasts!

Re: EGM is near death.

Has Joystiq updated the quality of their podcast? I like the interactions between the three of them, but its all shitty Skype quality.

Didn't David Ellis stick around too? So honestly, Shane is the only one that's really "gone" from 1UPYours right? (Since John isn't even with Ziff and was still coming back for the show.)

It'll be interesting to see how it all works out.

Re: EGM is near death.

Like Garnett or not, he is the reason the show exists existed and has maintained the quality it has had.

I've been listening to the newest CAGcast this morning and it looks like UGO let Wombat go as well. I guess they are banking on their current stable of popular personalities.

How many video game magazines are there left, though?

There are still the three "official" magazines for the individual platforms (Xbox Mag, OPM, Nintendo Power), which I'm assuming won't go away. There's Gamepro, which I'm surprised is still around. Game Informer, which is tied to Gamestop. Anything else? Those "Videogame cheats" ones that seem to linger on the rack (who the heck buys those anyway)? I think Play Magazine is a UK mag, right?

Re: EGM is near death.

I subscribed to Giant Bomb this morning. I will check it out tomorrow.

Right now i am catching up on Superfro's podcast (Signed In). I'd recommend checking it out - decent podcast and for those in cubicle-land there is no foul language that i have heard.

EGM is dead. Long live EGM. VIAGRA CIALIS ALL MEDS 4 U

The Giant Bombcast has gotten a lot better since the early days. No more energy drink talk (for the most part) and the addition of Brad and Vinny has made it more interesting.

Gamers With Jobs is another one that I've recently gotten into thanks to some posts in this thread.

I also like the CAGCast.

Having said that, the 1UP shows were my favorites (1UP FM, Retronauts, 1UP Yours, and GFW Radio) and this news really depresses me.

Re: EGM is near death.

Sucks. I'll miss the podcasts too. The shows got on my nerves at times, but 1up Yours, Lan Party, and 1up FM were all pretty good.

It seems like they maybe should have tried to charge for the podcasts before getting rid of everyone. I know most wouldn't have paid, but maybe enough would have to save some jobs.

I never used the 1up site for anything, so I won't be going there at all now. Oh well.
