Today ends my career at Ziff Davis Media, where I spent six of the richest years of my life as managing editor for EGM and then the 1UP Network. I'm leaving game journalism and heading over to the production side, where I'll be working at Sega as Associate Creative Director for Family/Casual games. This is a big deal for me. I started at Ziff in 2002 when EGM closed its Illinois office and moved to San Francisco with half a staff. Its managing editor at the time, Dean Hager, decided not to make the big move. I happened to need a job, having been at Next Generation magazine when it closed in December 2001, and I jumped at the opportunity to join EGM.
Six years later, I'm pretty shellshocked it's all over. The end hasn't been sudden -- obviously, my old print team has mostly dispersed, EGM has a bold new look and direction, and I've been working online at 1UP for almost a year. But having spent the better part of a week going through old work files and emails trying to decide what to save and what to toss, I've come to the bittersweet realization that I'm saying goodbye not just to a job, but to an era.

After reading her A- review of Wii Music I was wondering if she hadn't already gone to work for Nintendo. I liked her on the EGM Live podcast. Another 1UP member moving on.

Speaking of 1UP people... I saw Kathleen Sanders, formerly of 1UP (and the 1UP Show) on Major's Minute on XBOX Live the other day as a member of Microsoft's XNA division (independent games).
She looked a lot less weird and I guess Microsoft doesn't let her carry around her dog
Can't blame these people for fleeing a sinking ship though! Every man/woman for themself!

After a comprehensive process, this morning we completed a deal with Hearst Interactive, the owner and operator of UGO Entertainment. 1UP.com, MyCheats.com, Gamevideos.com, and Gametab.com will now all be part of the UGO Entertainment business. Many of our employees will travel with this business and become part of the UGO team.
With this transaction happening, we have also made the decision to discontinue publication of EGM. The January 2009 issue will be the final issue of the publication. With demand for print continuing to decline amongst both advertisers and readers and the content being produced by 1UP no longer available for use in the publication, it simply did not make sense for us to move forward with this business any longer.

Great, I wonder what "replacement sub" I'll get instead. What else does Ziff Davis still publish?

Re: EGM is near death.
Ryan O'Donnell has been twittering that he along with the rest of the 1up show team have been layed off.
Sucks but I can't feel bad for anyone that didn't escape the sinking ship of 1up... it's been years coming. I'm sure the 1UP team will come up with something entirely new though, lots of talented guys there and really the only part of the 1UP Network that I paid attention to.

Re: EGM is near death.
As much as some of them annoyed the crap out of me, I'll miss listening to 1Up Yours. Since the Hotspot went in the shithole, I was down to 1Up Yours and the CAGCast for video games. I haven't found a good alternative to a "hard" videogame podcast.
But I'm sure those guys will end up somewhere good. Except, I hope, for Shane. That guy needs to go away

Wow. This seriously fucking sucks. I've been a reader of EGM for over 13 years, never missing an issue, and listening to 1UP Yours/1UP FM/Retronauts every week for a year.
Seeing all those names on the "canned" list makes me really sad, especially after hearing their voices so much. No fairwell issue, no goodbye podcast, nothing.
Where do I turn to now for a great podcast? All I have left is KOXM and CagCast, which is quickly turning into 75% personal life and 25% gaming.

Re: EGM is near death.
I liked Shane, his retro knowledge is pretty amazing compared to most of the other staffers. Pity he wasn't on Retronauts more often.
For podcasts I have now just have Gamers with Jobs for games and highly recommend that podcast. I do have a CagCast subscription but I don't think that much of it.

And somehow Gamepro still survives... Ill miss the glory days of EGM for me back in the day when SF2 was so popular in arcades... this sucks
