I played the first two levels last night and I enjoyed it. I'm not sure how any levels it'll take before it gets old/routine, but they have a research/development system that should add new things to try as the levels progress. One thing I didn't see, and maybe I just overlooked it, was any sort of difficulty setting. So it looks like once you are finished w/ a level that's it. I mean I guess you can go back and play it again until you get all the rewards for the level, but there doesn't seem to be a way to play it on a higher difficulty.

EDIT: Although after you finish each planet a "Vengence Mode" unlocks. In that you face an unlimited hoard of bugs and all you have to do is survive as long as you can. So far this has been a lot of fun.

As far as whether or not it is worth $10, personally if you haven't already, I would sink my money into Age of Booty (esp if you are into online gaming as I don't see an online component in Savage Moon). Overall though I think I'm going to be get worth out of this $10 than I'm getting out of Cubiod ;)

I'm currently stuck on level 4 of Savage Moon.

I'm enjoying it, but am already starting to get a "it's getting old" feeling. I never had that with PJM.

One thing I love about PJM is that you can see the entire board without having to move a camera. When a "baddie" makes it's way to your base, you see it coming. With SM, it's pretty easy for something to sneak in when you're off in another area.

If there's an orbital view, I'd like to know how to get there.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - October 08 edition

I think it took me about 1/2 dozen tries to get past level 4. I think the key finally was to set up enough obstacles on the floor that the turrets on the rocks could do their work.

Specifically from what I recall I did...
Spoiler:

- turn on the credit bonus

- build the initial defenses on the rocks near the base/on the middle rocks on the same side as the base

- as soon as you can put a couple of blocks on the passage to the south, these seem to last most of the level start w/ a machine gun or so on the rocks by there, eventually you'll want to add a laser turret and maybe a mortar

- by the 3rd round (IIRC) make sure you have some air defense, I found on the middle rocks on the side opposite of the base, and on the floor (not on the rocks) as close to the base/on the south side as you possibly can

- make sure you stay up on upgrades/whenever possible start the next level early to get the credit bonus

- about 1/2 way through the level start building blocks in the main passage, it finally took 2 complete rows (2 closest to the base and 3 in front of them) to delay the bugs long enough for the laser/mortar turrets to do their work... if you have some available turrets you can re-enforce the back two w/ repair turrets but I'm honestly not sure how much that helped... make sure you replace the blocks whenever they are lost/or in between levels sell off the damaged ones and refresh them that way

- when you have a couple of available turrets set them up on the rock outcropping to the north of the screen (mortar and lasers... maybe some air defense but I think for the most part the flying units stay out of range of these)

- if you really want to setup a mortar/machine gun turrets by the entry points, and some air-defense in the upper left hand corner... this will do some initial damage to the larger bugs when they first appear... I'm not sure how much of an impact it really had though

- where I almost lost it was on the final wave when one of the large bugs finally broke through the south block so don't forget about that passage... I just kept building block towers in front of it while the other turrets on the rocks whittled it down

EDIT: and if you think level 4 was fun just wait till you get to level 5... the bugs start fighting back -eek-

As far as the game itself, I agree the camera could use some work. When it auto zooms during an upgrade that's ok, but it doesn't put you back at the same zoom level when you are done and that's annoying. Also if any game needed a record/playback feature it's this one. During the level you're too busy running around trying to replace/upgrade turrets you really don't get a chance to enjoy the carnage ;) (or try to learn what strategies work/fail).

Good luck

You need to scroll all the way to the left on the XMB. Then choose turn off system. If you have something currently downloading, a checkbox will appear after you select turn off system. Check the box by hitting X and you're good to go.

Here's a question for those who use the PS3 as a media extender or connect it to a media server. Does the PS3 upscale any SD content? If I were to stream a VOB file to the PS3, would the video quality be the same as if there were a disc in the system?

The PS3 upscales even divx files and it supports them for 5.1 sound. I'm sure it will upscale vob.

What programs can convert files to play on the ps3? I've been using PS3 Video9 since I got it in june, but recently it seems to freeze halfway through the conversion and I've given up looking for a solution to the problem.

Just convert them to divx. It fully supports divx. They even added support for older divx 3.1 files recently. Plenty of free divx converters online.

Thanks. I knew it was going to be something simple that I was missing.

Is there a way to support 720p res video files without having them in vob or converted from mkv to vob? Do they support them in anything but vob? I know it doesn't support them in normal divx format.

After I get my new hdtv (my first), I plan to use my ps3 as my blu-ray player but do you guys think I will overuse it if I use it as my regular DVD player too? I use it for games as well but less than my other consoles. I ask because my current standalone DVD player only has component OUT and I don't think it upconverts the quality as opposed to the PS3. Also, the hdtv I'm getting unfortunately only has 1 component IN which will be utilized by my Wii as well so it'd be hassle switching those back and forth. Should I just buy a standalone dvd player with a HDMI out that can upconvert to decrease the useage of the PS3. My main other concern about "overusing" the PS3 is that it's among the last batch of backwards compatible PS2 versions which is important to me.

Also, how durable are optical toslink audio cables? Unless I get a new receiver with 2 optical audio inputs, I'll have to switch the cable back and forth between my 360 and ps3.

I was a having problem with my sixaxis controller. The left analog stick was not registering in the "right" direction. It was still under warrenty so I sent it back for repair. Sony sent me a dualshock to replace it. Sweet! The only downside was it took about 3 weeks for the whole turn around. Not too bad I guess. We don't play that many 2 players games so I didn't miss it that much.

Does your receiver have a coaxial input for digital audio? If so you can buy a optical to coaxial converter pretty cheap.

Here it is from monoprice.com. $11.16 before shipping...

You were right. Vob files look fantastic on the PS3.

However, I have a new question that perhaps you or some other knowledgeable soul can help with. The general question is: What are you doing in regards to multiple vob files? More specifically: How do you organize them, do you group them into albums? Is there a way to load the ifo file so you can have a menu structure?

Now that I have connected to my media server, in the PS3 under video I have hundreds of generically-labeled vob files and am trying to figure out how best to deal with them (without encoding).

Thanks for any help you or anyone may have.

Do I need some special software encoding to play back vob files?
