Yeah I thought the bots could kick down the shields pre-patch. Fixing the backwards shield thing is good because people could exploit that.

First, the multiplayer connection issues are just awful. And when you are finally in a room, Epic forced everyone to be ranked (of course you can do private, but you need a room of 10). So, after the pain of getting into a room, you play the match, and then you are kicked back out to the lobby and have to go through the same process. So for every 5 minutes of waiting to get into a room, you have a equal time of gameplay. I assume Epic was so worried about rank cheating.

The contrast is in COD, everyone stays in the room and teams are rearranged. So in Gears 1, they had basic unranked matches and you could stay in the same room for hours and you had very little idle time (once again, I know there are private rooms, but many don't have 9 Gears friends at once).

In addition, Epic is forcing gamers to play gametypes you don't want to play. I can't imagine Halo or COD forcing gamers to not be able to play team deathmatch solely or some other gametype. The best Epic allows you to do is get it down to 3 gametypes and hope you play team deathmatch.

From a playing aspect, little things like powerful guns overtaking maps, smoke grenades knocking you down, grenade tags on walls (not a bad idea, just implemented poorly), etc..

GOW 2 is a great game, but being a flagship title, these problems, which should never have surfaced in the first place, are unacceptable. And worse, they still haven't been patched.
That pretty much covers it. I play Gears 1 with my Gears buddies almost every night. They don't like Gears 2 much...especially being forced to do the matchmaking and stuck playing gametypes you don't want to play.

I thought the patch cleared up some weirdness and it's better IMO but being forced to deal with the matchmaking sucks. And the smoke grenade knock-downs get really annoying.

We're still playing Gears 1 every night. It's full of wonky stuff, but at least we can play match after match without twiddling our thumbs for matchmaking. And it sucks you can't play folks more than once you meet in matchmaking.

Is there still a decent community left?

GOW 2 fixed things I hated about GOW 1 (getting shot not stopping an animation, hipfire shotgunning, etc...), but I spend more time at the menu than playing GOW 2.

Not really. There's still some good folks on but lots of split screeners and other awful people. I play really late at night (about midnight EST) most nights with my Gears buddies on the West coast.

I generally fire the shotgun from the hip myself. I never aim it unless someone is running or I've got the jump on someone. I prefer to keep moving.

I registered for this, but...

I played a complete public Annex match yesterday morning. My Xbox profile says the last time I played online was in January. The gearsofwar.xbox stats page also says the last time I played was a month ago. Either the stats take a long time to update or my entry didn't go through and there's no reason to keep playing for 12 more days.

Finally finished this game last night, and I really loved the single player game. Now I'll probably play multiplayer for a little while before I start on my next game.

I was playing some Versus type Multiplayer matches and now I know why I like Horde better.

Re: Gears of War 2 Discussion Thread

I love/hate MP.
Sometimes is basically hoping that you are in the team that stays intact before the game starts. If you are in the team that drops or two players before the game starts then...

But it's still fun when it's 5 vs 5, and I specially like KOTH and Annex, since I kinda die pretty often

Re: Gears of War 2 Discussion Thread

Yeah, I seem to end up with people on the opposing team who've apparently partied up and played GOW2 all day so they're impossible to beat, and people on my team who drop when things get tough.

Screw versus.

Argh so far the farthest I've gotten in a public horde match is wave 47. So close!

you know you can start your own private horde match at level 47 to try to complete all 50 right?

^ What DVDChris said. You can pick up where you left off and get the achievement. Your score just resets to zero.

Re: Gears of War 2 Discussion Thread

Yeah, I was thinking it might be a bit hard though to start off at 47 with no shields and just your normal weapons. I suppose it's nice that you can put it on easy. What difficulty is public horde set to? Normal?

Yea with no shield it's tough. Can't remember which level down you can get them or which map may be a good choice for quick respawn. I know Avalance has the shields respawn quickly in the bed of the truck.

Oh yea I can vouch for Marc, he''ll hang till the end. I wouldn't mind some Horde with fellow DVD Talkers. It's getting frustrating with random with drop-outs. But I've got Left For Dead coming and I'll be with it Friday. Anyone for tomorrow night?

Re: Gears of War 2 Discussion Thread

If you are playing Horde alone one of the easiest maps to finish the game is Day One. I had 37-40 missing and completed them by myself in that map. In easy of course. You have to go up one of the stairs and try to kill everyone from there. In the past it was even easier with the shields, you could block the entrance, but I didn't use them and I was able to complete those 4 levels.

Re: Gears of War 2 Discussion Thread

When you play Horde that way you don't get any Team AI/Bots right?

I got lucky and was able to finish all 50 with a team and host who kept the game going even when we all got killed.

Yep, it's just you. No bots, no nothing.
That's why even at Easy you have to find a really good spot where to stay.

Anyone for a group of Horde tonight? I'll check in about 7-7:30 Central. If not I'll crack open my new one...Left For Dead.

Re: Gears of War 2 Discussion Thread

I tried Horde last night by myself, and I only made it to Level 5.

A big problem of mine is that I was trying to finish off a few achievements, so I died while trying to do some pretty stupid things. I think the only weapon-related one I have left is the chainsaw duel, which I should finish up tonight.

Re: Gears of War 2 Discussion Thread

I've got a few more achievements to get myself. I need one more level to get the one where you reach Level 10 on all the maps. Problem is I'm not sure which map. Level 10 is of course when the "Bloodmounts" come.
I need one more for all the execution which is with the sniper rifle. I would normally be searching for Horde matches on Friday night but since I just got Left For Dead I'll be looking for coop on it instead.
