They have built up enough goodwill with me, but from a business standpoint, this is one of Harmonix's worst plays...and so near GH...it is pretty astonishing.

As you all know, I'm a staunch Harmonix supporter. We don't know the whole deal here. It could be a masters issue, as was the case in both the Boston album and the Who's Next deal. If this is the case, there's nothing they could do besides maybe make covers or find alternate versions.

If it is not a masters issue, and is a money issue of them wanting to put these on a physical disc release or release them as a pack later on, I won't stand by their decision as much. It could also be that the label/Love were asking too much for these tracks and they didn't see it as profitable at this time. I don't know how this will pan out in the future, we'll just have to wait and see.

With their decision right now, I'm sure the pack won't sell as well as it did with the three big ones missing. I'll probably only end up picking up two or three, where I would've probably picked up the whole album if it had all the tracks.

Shag, I am also a Harmonix supporter. From their marketing machine to delivering everything from Avenged Sevenfold to Duran Duran, I have no real complaints.

But whether this is a license/master/or whatever issue, this is just a huge headscratcher. They should have held it all back until they had all their ducks in a row. But the stupidity is only compounded by being so close to the GH release. They have GH on their heels....could deliver a vicious blow...and they absolutely whiffed at a critical juncture.

I'm going to guess it's a Love/record label thing as well. I'm very disappointed that they didn't choose this week as the time to release the 20 songs. I don't get it. I sure hope they're not waiting for the Wii release in December now.

blah blah blah Nirvana blah blah blah

But has anyone in the Pittsburgh area found a retailer breaking street on the PS3 RB2? C'mon fellow 'burghers. Help me out. And for the record, Robinson Town Center is a no go. It ended badly for me, redirecting my purchasing urges onto a $30 copy of Warhawk.

Help

Can someone clear this up for me please...

I have a PS3 and Guitar Hero III for it. I wanted to buy the Rock Band 2 disc tomorrow, will my wireless les paul for the ps3 work with rock band 2? I think there was a patch or something, but will it work so I can only buy the disc?

Also,
Can I just rent the Rock Band 1 disc and export the songs for $5? Do I understand this right, as well?

Thanks!
-Stephen

I went to a bunch of rental places by me and nobody was renting RB1 any more, and this was months ago before RB2 even came out. It may be hard to find a RB1 to rent.

I ended up picking up a used copy for 25 bucks. still not a bad deal ( at least I don't think so ).

They could shut down the speculation and the annoyed feelings if they just kind of communicated the situation. We don't need business secrets or anything but saying there were "issues with the rights" or "problems with the masters" would go a long way imo. Especially since Nevermind was rumored to be a full album release from the very beginning.

This all compounds with the lack of info on the 20 free tracks to become really irritating. The game case itself claims you can download 20 free tracks. So does the manual. It is complete garbage they used it as a selling point and it isn't here yet.

However, if they at least told me what i would be getting and an ETA i wouldn't be nearly as annoyed.

The thing is this isn't labeled "Nevermind Minus 3". It's "Nirvana Pack 01" that has 7 songs that all happen to be from that album.

They don't owe anyone an explanation, they don't. It sucks that we don't know, but we don't need to know. They are a business and they have relationships with artists and labels as well as secrets from their competitors. It is in their best interest to protect those relationships and secrets.

Yes, I want to know. Teasedale has said they have access to all of Nevermind so it isn't a masters issue. They'll come eventually.

The free 20 unknowns does suck, though, I agree.

You are correct they don't owe anyone an explanation. However, without an explanation the situation breeds some discontent and grumbling. IMO, an explanation would cut a good bit of that down.

From a business perspective though it would be a situation where they needed to decide which would impact their business worse: online grumbling among fans of their program or the potential of leaking secrets (like you mentioned). Obviously the impotent grumbling online won't hurt them like trade secrets would.

But that means i'm allowed my impotent grumbling online.

Well, we already know that HMX needs a dedicated PR person or staff, so... I would expect the discontent to continue.

That's my main gripe with the "free" 20 as well - I put it in quotes because as you say, it was actually promised on the game case itself, so a person could consider them part of what you paid for in the first place.

Agreed, give us a date or general ETA and it would stop most of the complaining.

I was just going to edit my post to include that ...poor PR from HMX is nothing new, so you'd think we'd be used to it. Whoever they DO have on the payroll in that department needs to be canned.

I think they have a pretty kickass PR team, and it's much better than GH:WT's "Community Countdown" bullshit that I've seen being kicked around.

Yeah, I guess I get the irritation over the missing 3, but from a business perspective, Harmonix knows they'd sell tons of the album complete, and will lose a lot of sales from anything other than serious Nirvana fans or DLC completists with the current pack. There is no doubt in my mind that it is an issue over rights. If it was a desire to make any of these disc songs, one of them would have been on RB2.

The 20 free songs I don't get. It's one thing to say that they dropped the ball on Nirvana right at GHWT's release, because most new buyers aren't as concerned with each week's DLC as they are the DLC available overall. And most current owners are probably going to pick up both games regardless (or have long since made up their minds). But it makes sense from a competitive standpoint to make the advertised 20 available prior to GHWT's launch, or to at least release the list. Honestly, I don't care when I get them, as I know they'll come, but I'm a little surprised by the lack of info given the competition.

Oh, and Dr. Feelgood is awesome. Figured I'd thrown that in since I've been out of town and have missed all the fun until now.

The 7 Nirvana songs, while not bad songs, seem like they'd be pretty boring on most instruments...IMHO

So it's a pass for me this week. Though HMX could set themselves up for an amazing 3 pack someday; Who knows, maybe the last 3 songs will be released at the $2.99 pricepoint

This is my problem with album releases. Sure musically they are great, but the game is not really about the music. Its about how fun it is to play. What is the point of releasing tracks that are boring to play?

I would rather have a song I never heard before that was a blast to play than some chart topper that is a borefest.

I couldn't agree more. Give me Jagged Gorgeous Winter by some group I never heard of over boring stuff from established artists any day. Not to say I think the non-hits from nevermind are boring, but I have not much desire to get them.

Precisely. They could easily have a Nirvana Pack 02 in the works that include these three songs and you will still get the full album/challenges, just not this Tuesday. Not a huge deal.

Count me as another losing faith & patience on the HMX20. It's supposed to be a bonus for buying the game. Not a bonus for keeping the game for 3 months. They seriously need to put out one of two things. Either put out the track list (so we can discuss the free tracks), or put out a firm release date that is not three more months away.

Secondly, we're not really in the habit of making an announcement about why we didn't release something. Don't like the Pixies example? There are plenty of others to choose from. Why did we only release three tracks from Weezer's Red Album? Why didn't we release Pork & Beans instead of the three tracks we did? We only make announcements about the songs we are actually releasing. And next week we're releasing the 7 Nirvana tracks listed. That's the announcement.

The Nevermind rumor has been beaten to death and I would have hoped people would have gotten over it by now. It was never announced. It was never confirmed. It was a misunderstanding. I think it's pretty awesome that Nirvana fans have In Bloom in RB1, Drain You in RB2, and now 7 other awesome Nirvana tracks coming out next week as DLC.

An update from HMX about the Nevermind stuff.

Have a little more patience, the PS3 users are only just now getting the game at all

I think they will surprise us with the 20 songs, that's HMX's style IMO.
