For those of you interested, it looks like at least the PS3 version is available at most Target stores already. Oh man that's tempting, but I shall wait!

Tell her that you're spending time with the kids and they are playing the games, you are just watching. If she walks into the room toss the controller to one of your kids and pretend like you are cheering them on.

Bribe them with cookies or cars depending on how old they are.

This game has totally given Shadow Complex the dirt-nap for me. Make sure you finish that before starting Arkham.

Seriously, not to hyperbolize, but this is definitely "game of the year" material folks.

What's taken me by surprise, even more than the solid game play, is the atmosphere and the level of immersion that even gives Bioshock a run for it's money.

I'll field questions.

I totally agree. At first the game was boring but as the game progresses, the story gets better and the missions are awesome! I'm also around 10%. It really makes you feel like you're Batman!

Absolutely. It's a AAA-game all the way - even if it wasn't Batman, it would make a great game.

You get to choose your difficulty (easy, medium, hard). I picked easy just so I can focus more on exploration, and it's been a cake-walk so far. I could totally see playing this again, and picking hard for my 2nd go-through.

The fighting works well as both button-mashing or combo-strings - it's fun either way, but you have to make sure to look out for counters, which are easy to get the hang of.

The game just keeps surprising me every step of the way.

Apparently. I asked the workers at my local Gamestop the same question, and they said the amount of preorders alone warranted the special midnight event.

Lots of hype with this game, I suppose. I cannot wait until I get my copy Tuesday.

Deftones 08-23-09 10:08 PM

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

Let's be real here. What percentage of people come and pick the game up at midnight? 10%? 5%? I mean, if people have already preordered it, the likelihood is they'll come in and get it there instead of buying somewhere else.

Supermallet 08-24-09 02:25 AM

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

My Gamestop is not doing a midnight, which is fine, because I won't have time to play this until Wednesday anyway.

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

i've been lucky enough to get the game today from a preorder.
I've played about 2 hours and only got 2% completion. strange because the ign reviewer said it took him 9 hours. maybe the % completion includes getting all the achievements?

Graphics are pretty good and i love the cut scenes.
I cant figure out when the game is saving though. There is supposed to be an autosave icon that pops up when it savings, but i've yet to see it.

Playing it on normal and so far the game is a cakewalk. I encountered one boss fight so far and he was pretty easy.

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

We're doing midnight because most stores have 50-100 reserves for Batman (we have 150 and #1 in the region)....the Beatles is lucky to have 5-10 at any store (we have 26 and are awesome)

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

Also, the game does kick ass....I'm about 20% or so into it as I don't wanna rush it. 3 of my friends already beat it after a day or 2 it's that good. It's VERY close to Bioshock for best dark/adventure game ever.

As if I haven't talked this game up enough, I'm just a little past when you first get to
Spoiler:
The mini-Batcave Wayne installed on Arkham "just in case"
, and I can attest that this game is a flat-out masterpiece. Maybe my expectations were low, but man, they fucking knocked this one out of the park - this game's on the same level of quality and polish as a game like Bioshock, Gears of War, or a next-gen 3D Metroid game.

I'm honestly surprised at all the praise for this game. I thought it'd be just another screwed up attempt at bringing a comic book to video games. Definitely picking it up now though.

I stopped by one of these for a game I got once just to see if there was any kind of scene going on, showed up at about 11 pm - did my trade ins and they said, "OK here you go." I was out of there with a new game an hour before they were "supposed" to sell it.

I don't know if all these places do it like that but it works for me.

The midnight openings for games are usually pretty quiet around here. Then again, I have only been to one (MGS 4) and that was 30 mins tops, and we were done.

My feelings as well. I'm pretty sure my skepticism is well documented throughout this thread.

But the demo is pretty good, and it sounds like it get even better.

And another review, this time from JoyStiq, calling it the best game of 2009 so far:

Rest assured, I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that Batman: Arkham Asylum is unquestionably the best licensed game I've ever played. At the end of the day, however, that's a fairly low hurdle to clear -- it better reflects the game's quality to say it's one of the best stealth-action games ever made, and easily the best video game 2009 has had to offer thus far.

A big part of the game that you don't get a sense of in the demo is the exploration aspect of it, and the fantastic world they've created for you to explore. This is much more of an exploration game with a solid story than anything else, and that's what's pleasantly surprised me about it. Because going off the demo, you'd think it was just a sold action game, and while it certainly has that aspect to it, it's so much more.

That sounds really promising, as I love Metroid and anything that feels like it.

I'm getting a Metroid with Batman vibe...which sounds f'ing brilliant.

Fuck it all. I guess I'll be at TRU at 10am tomorrow to get the 360 version. I don't care enough about the extra content to bust the cherry on my PS3 gaming for anything that isn't God of War or Kingdom Hearts.

Brent L 08-24-09 05:15 PM

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

For those of us with both a PS3 and the 360, I don't see how anyone wouldn't pick the PS3 version. I mean, read this...

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/101/1017156p1.html

Again, this is way tougher than Batman's challenges, and I love it. Aside from getting even more dynamite dialogue from Mark Hamill, these modes provide a challenge by stripping away the gadgets you've been leaning on the entire game and diminishing your health bar. Joker's ground takedowns take longer to pull off so you'll need to have an eye for when to spring them, his reversals are funny like when he salutes a guy while simultaneously hitting him in the face, and so on.

The long and short of it is that the Joker's addition is a free piece of downloadable content that really changed the way I viewed the challenges. Suddenly, my go-to tactics were gone and I was left on two feet and surrounded by good guys trying to take me down. These modes are a worthy addition to Batman: Arkham Asylum that'll separate the Batmen from the boys.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lcOwEvkjzhc&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lcOwEvkjzhc&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I guess if you don't care about the Joker I could see why you'd spring for the 360 version. Some compare site gave the edge to the PS3 version too, from the technical standpoints, although I can't remember the name of the site I was looking at earlier. They're just about the exact same though, so either way you'll have a great game.

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

My hopes certainly weren't high for this game, and I wasn't that impressed with the demo, but I'll definitely be picking this up before the end of the week.

Sadly, this means stopping in the middle of Infamous, but I'll pick it up again in a couple weeks when I'm through with Batman.

Oh yeah, and I'll probably get the PS3 version.

UncleGramps 08-24-09 05:18 PM

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

Yeah, given the lack of online features and that review of the Joker content, I think I'll go with the PS3 version.

After much internal debate, I decided on the 360 version. Controller & achievements/gamerscore decided it for me. There have also been reports of the game looking better on the 360 than the PS3 but I have nothing to really confirm that, so those statements may be just fanboys dreaming. Supposed screen tearing and stuff.

Plus, I seriously doubt the Joker stuff will be a "forever" exclusive. And even if it is, I will just nab a used PS3 copy from Goozex in a year or so if people say it is worth it. From the descriptions I have read, it is mainly for "trial" type levels which I generally don't enjoy in games anyway. This title sounds good enough that there will likely be plenty floating around used/clearance/trades in the future.

My main curiosity is seeing the sales figures a month from now. Since the 360 usually dominates the PS3 in cross platform game sales, it will be interesting to see if the Joker missions are enough to push the PS3 version ahead of the 360 one.

Here is the site doing the comparison that I mentioned earlier...

http://www.lensoftruth.com/?p=14110

Although we’re pretty sure you’re gonna be happy with buying Batman: Arkham Asylum on either console, we believe the PlayStation 3 is the better game even if it wasn’t a perfect win.
It's really a toss up if you don't include the PS3 exclusive Joker challenge maps and all of that.

It's really, truly a 3-D Metroid, through and fucking through - with just as much attention to detail and quality, if not more. The only difference being, since you're Batman, instead of guns and shooting like in Metroid, there's a beat-em-up combo system in place, and upgraded gadgets to get you to areas you couldn't before.

I once got tracking info for a bluray 1 day after I had already received it lol...

Not only that, but it will probably be packaged in a refrigerator box. Last bluray I got was in a box the size of Rock band 2. I thought I had somehow just ordered packing peanuts, but turns out I did actually order a bluray
