I'm wondering that too. When RB1 came out, there were quite a few songs and packs for download right away (not free of course), so maybe they will be more than just indie and HMX bands. Maybe it's some songs they wanted to get on disc, but couldn't because of time restraints? Or maybe they just want to trump Activision and their 85 crap.

At any rate, they're free, so no complaints out of me.

Maybe it is just the masters. At least tracks on disc by The Who, Pixies, etc. should be included.
Yeah, I only have a few that I can't imagine losing...The Who and Boston primarily. You have to figure that they and the Pixies will be included. But once I sit down, I'll probably find that I want most of them.

Somehow I don't think I'll bother importing Green Grass and High Tides or Flirtin' with Disaster if there is a limit to the number of songs that you can import.

IGN article says:

Harmonix actually wanted to toss in 100 tracks total for the disk, but couldn't get them all in one time to ship for Xbox 360 by September. So this fall, MTV is releasing an additional 20 downloadable master tracks... for free.

Yeah, definitely a big variety. I'm curious to see how some of those like you listed (Duran Duran, Dylan) end up playing on guitar or drums.

My thoughts:

The 20 extra tracks will be known bands, not homebrew stuff from the developers. I think some of those Offspring tunes might be a part of it.

'Extracting' tunes from the RB1 disc: I bet there were rights issues with some of the master recordings. i.e. licensed for use in Rock Band not Rock Band 2.

Joystiq is reporting that the RB1 import feature will cost $5 to execute: http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/ro...-to-rb2-for-5/

The Rock Band 2 press release, which included the final set-list for the game, also mentions that Rock Band content from the discs will be transferable to the sequel, but for a price. The release states that "owners of the original Rock Band will have the ability to export most of the Rock Band disc tracks and upgrade them into Rock Band 2 gameplay-the first time ever in videogame history!" You will need to pay an unlocking fee to do so, which will be "under 5 dollars."The Rock Band 2 press release, which included the final set-list for the game, also mentions that Rock Band content from the discs will be transferable to the sequel, but for a price. Did I miss that in the PR here or are they just making shit up?

I call bullshit on that joystiq story, but we'll see.

As for the "most" thing, someone on ScoreHero guessed that maybe the GH-Exclusive bands can't get ported over. So maybe no Aerosmith?

I'd say these are the ones that I'm at least pretty geeked for, but I'm excited over most of this list. I had forgotten Fleetwood Mac (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) was on the leaked list, and that is almost worth the purchase price for me.

And the beauty of what I've found from RB and GH before it is that I usually end up really enjoying the songs that I didn't expect to, so I don't poo poo much. Harmonix has shown that they have a pretty good feel for what works best in their games to appease casuals looking for certain music and more advanced players looking for challenging charts and high scores. And anyone looking for fun..

Ahh, that's another good theory. That might leave out Enter Sandman as well.

As for it being bogus, it is E3 and everyone who's everyone will have meetings with the Harmonix guys, so I don't see why this would be bogus. There will have to be an update to allow the transfer, so I can see them charging for it.

I don't know why they'd do it for free, and the PR posted here has a footnote reference "[2]" that I couldn't follow.

Seems to me that the PR we read is missing a bit of info. $5 is small enough to not matter, but it does make it highly arbitrary.

I didn't see it anywhere. Still, I'd gladly pay $5 if it included most of the songs. But I'd much rather pay $0.

Shagrath - I'd be willing to bet the Aerosmith thing is true.

I wonder if we'll be able to select which songs to import?

Yeah, I'm the same way. What looks great on paper won't necessarily be fun to play and vice versa. I ended up enjoying the songs I didn't know in GHIII more than I did the ones I did know.

joystiq is a banned word on other large forums I go to because of their long history of coming up with bullshit stories. Not saying that this is one of them, but I'll wait for the official word from Harmonix.

$5 not to have to disc swap? Even if it's true, I'm totally in, considering I would have re-bought many tracks if offered as regular priced DLC.

And good point on Aerosmith.

I would totally pay a fee as well to DL the old setlist. But I don't trust this thing by joystiq. Again, I could be wrong, but I always wait for the official word nowadays.

Shame Metallica is already in the RB2 set list...and there's that Death Magnetic single yet to come.

But if only that could happen. I would love to see the face of 90% of random people on RB online.
