Here is something different. The 2.5 update is supposed to hit tomorrow (at least for Europe, US may get it Thursday as usual) and they are updating the browser to Flash 9. That makes the PS3 capabile of playing a crap load of online content and handling websites better. It is rare for a non PC to get Flash 9 so this is really a big update.
I was seeing if my PS3 could be used to watch shows on NBC.com last night, since my DVR crapped out while recording Heroes. When I tried to access it, it said Flash 9 was not supported on my "unknown" operating system. |
What the heck is Hulu?
Do I automatically get promted to update my PS3 when I turn it on or do I have to do it manually? Ive had my system for a month and havent gotten an update prompt. |

Go to hulu.com to check it out. It is a site owned by NBC that lets you watch/stream full tv episodes.

Fox is also a partner with Hulu. They have lots of cool stuff on there including the Film Crew DVDs that came out from the old MST3K guys.
Hopefully the update hits late tonight. I will definitely try out stuff like Hulu. I'm trying to be optimistic, but the PS3 browser may also have memory issues or something else that prevents it from working. I've held off on buying one of those streaming from PC programs that works with Hulu and hopefully that patience pays off. I'm just wondering if the Netflix service could work as well? Does it use Flash? Seems like Sony has to have a good reason to pay the licensing to add Flash 9 so I'm hoping it works. |
Flash 9 support, if real, would be huge! It's like the Xbox having Netflix support.
Btw, Youtube has always worked for me. Now, YouPorn, that another story.. :p |

I've been using PlayOn since it came out, but haven't paid for it yet.
If stuff like Hulu, Fancast, nbc.com, etc actually work tomorrow...........I think I could live without paying for PlayOn if all that's left for it is Netflix. I don't think Netflix will work on the PS3 with this flash update, you need Netflix's movie player installed. PlayOn actually requires the player to be installed first on your PC in order for it to stream. |
Adding Flash 9 is one way for them to compete with the impending netflix feature on the 360 which I think is going to negate that somewhat.
Here's hoping Hulu works. |
Holy shit! I just checked out Hulu and randomly I entered 'hercules' and it looks like every episode of Young Hercules is on there! So I can watch this for free? Soon maybe on the PS3? Now... is there a way to save em and burn them to a DVD? Id be in heaven!
Edit: Spoke too soon. None of the damn vids loaded. It says unable to stream and to check my interent. Yea... like thats the problem |

There is a way but it violates their Terms of Service so don't do it. Works for me. |
Update is Live go get it!

Not perfect but it works. Looks like the side options don't work, but starting and zooming with the browser works fine.
|
...sigh... just sitting here staring at the install creep by.
*edit - I can't get shit to load on Hulu. First I tried the Unit which is a CBS show and is apparently just linked off hulu to CBS's website. No go on that one, so I tried ER since it's an NBC show and only get a loading screen. |

I have the 80 gig mgs4 bundle. Its ps1 and ps2 BC. Did Sony take out the BC on new 80 gigs? It's getting really annoying how Sony keeps changing their minds on what goes into the ps3.

How does the quality look when you zoom? |
i will be downloading this later today - hulu support would be huge. if this update supports hulu through the browser and with the 360's support of netflix coming 11/19, there is no reason for me to get off the couch ever again.

I only had a minute or two before leaving for work this morning to try Hulu, so I'm glad to hear some kind of full-screen option is working.

PlayOn actually requires the player to be installed first on your PC in order for it to stream. This was my thoughts exactly. I was thinking of paying $30 for PlayOn since it seems "reasonable", but now with everything basically free...I will pass on it. PlayOn is still more convienent though. Although, I have a 360 and Netflix support will be free for that, so PlayOn is obsolete I suppose. |
Quality is decent. I got it to work with an episode of Daily Show and Colbert Report which I watched all the way through, but a movie I tried would not load last night.
The downside is the options on the side like full screen or 480 quality don't seem to work, but just starting the video and zooming in with the R2 button seems to work fine. Quality is decent enough and the fact it is there if I need it and free is also nice. I'll try other websites today. |
