I just picked up a ps3 and I'm having a problem getting sound over the optical cable.

My connections:
Video: hdmi (ps3) -> dvi (tv) Looks great
Audio: Optical (ps3) -> Optical (receiver)

Audio set up on the ps3:
Sound Settings -> Digital Out (Optical) -> Checked boxes for Dolby Digital 5.1 ch., DTS 5.1 ch., AAC, Linear PCM 2 ch. 44.1 Hz, Linear PC 2 ch. 48 Hz

BD/DVD Settings (I've searched online and this is what people recommended):
BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital)-> Bitstream

My receiver only has one optical in and I have the PS3 plugged directly into it. If I switch the cable to my 360 over optical everything works great. So the cable works and so does my receiver. The receiver is old, a Pioneer VSX-D511 but it works great with the 360.

Anyone have any ideas?

You can get the white DS3 from Amazon also

This is going to be an expensive few weeks for me for new games, and I haven't bought any new retail games in awhile... LBP, Fallout 3, then Resistance 2, I won't know which one to play!

edit: I forgot about Bioshock... my poor credit card!

You'll probably want to uncheck AAC, as I believe that is for streaming AAC without decoding it first. Many receivers (including yours I imagine) don't accept this. Of course you can still play AAC files.

With what are you not getting sound? One thing I thought of is that many BD movies have a 640kbps DD track (higher bitrate than DVD), and some receivers don't accept this either. You should still be getting sound from the PS3's XMB if you enable the "key tone."

I've tried unchecking the AAC.

I'm not getting any sound from the XMB or anything via optical. I tried just the standard composite cable last night, I get sound from those. But I get nothing from the PS3 via optical.

Have you updated all the firmware and stuff? If I remember correctly, at one point you weren't able to do HDMI out and optical out but I may be thinking about my tivo. But nonetheless, make sure you're firmware and ps3 are all up to date.

FWIW, I couldn't get shit to work when I used a HDMI -> DVI cable. Try component/optical just to see if it works, if so then you've pin pointed the problem.

Really? I use HDMI to DVI for a computer monitor, and I haven't had any problems.

Msdmoney, since the PS3 can only output audio over one type of connection at a time, if you're getting audio out of the analog cable, the optical must not be selected for some reason. Maybe you didn't save the configuration. You have to go to that last screen and press X to save the settings.

If anyones still interested in the game, Folklore is $15 at best buy in the clearence section. Thats a great deal considering most stores still have it priced at $60.

I checked here in Manhattan and the price is still $60. Which is a bummer because at $15 I definitely would have picked up the game.

pinata242 10-09-08 12:24 PM

^ That happened to me yesterday here in Owasso, USA. Had them scan it, just in case - still $59.99.

Just as well as I already have a large backlog.

Yeah, I mentioned that last week in the RPG discussion thread. It rang up as $59.99, but it was in the 30% Off Clearance bin. So, I could have gotten it for $42, but still too much for me.

Yep I'm using 2.43

I started out with optical out, and then when it wasn't working I just switched the settings on my ps3 and tried composite and it worked. I've gone through the setup for optical and every possible combo about 20 times now.

I'll try that tonight.

I'm thinking it must be my receiver since it's so old. I ordered a new Onkyo SR606 so I can just output via hdmi.

Good update, but is anyone subscribing to Qore? I can't imagine why. They are also launching the premium themes today, but I don't understand why Xbox users pay for these and I'm definitely not buying them on PS3.

Agreed. I'll stick to the freebies.

fujishig 10-09-08 05:16 PM

My last issue of PSM came, again, with a free issue of Qore (issue 3). I'm not sure how long they're going to continue doing this, but I'm fine with waiting a month to get it for "free."

Music 10-09-08 05:31 PM

Not seeing anything new yet... or is it updated at 8PM EDT / 5PM PDT?

SonOfAStu 10-09-08 05:51 PM

Can't remember where I read it, but one of the upcoming Qore issues was supposed to have the Home Beta.

The update is up.

Usually the store updates between 4 and 6 PM Eastern, but updates have come as late as 8 or 9 PM, before.

Music 10-09-08 06:33 PM

Thanks!

That might get me to drop the $2.99. The current one lists Valkyria Chronicles exclusive demo and as much as I want to check it out I'm not paying $3 for the priveldge.

Most of those premium themes are kind of lame, but I have to admit the Bioshock one looks pretty nice. Can't believe some of the lamer ones are $2.

I'm really happy to see Puzzle Quest available for $15 with the Xbox add on included. Definitley buying that one.

BTW, EA continues to disgust me with the cost of their add on content for Tiger, FIFA and NBA. Burnout can give us so much for free, but they charge $20 for some of that sports bullcrap. They also jacked the Tiger course to $7.50 for 09. Ridiculous.

SonOfAStu 10-09-08 08:17 PM

I haven't checked out an issue of Qore yet, so I bought the latest one. Bought Linger In Shadows because it's cheap and looks interesting enough to try out. Then the Hot Shots Golf DLC (it's just new outfits, but my girlfriend will enjoy it), Offspring Pack, All Right Now, and Bad to the Bone.

Expensive week! :)

Chew 10-10-08 08:39 AM

I tried Linger in Shadows for about 2-3 minutes. Had no idea what the hell was going on, how to do anything, or what the point was.

Ended up with 3 trophies.

Dead Space is "the world's scariest game" says the latest issue of PSW magazine, which goes on sale tomorrow with the first PS3 review. Needless to say, it scores well.

So well, in fact, that the magazine goes so far as to say it topples the Resident Evil series from its survival horror throne.

"No one has really come close to jostling Capcom's T-Virus infected romp through Eastern Europe from its top spot since it arrived back in 2005. That is until now, of course," says the review.

"This is bold, bleak gaming from the haunting opening credits to the pulse pounding finish.

"Stunningly detailed, expertly paced and lavishly slaved over by Glen Schofield and his crew at EA Redwood, Dead Space should be classed as one of the finest looking and intelligently crafted games in many a moon," the review gushes.

"This is a horror game first and foremost, so naturally you expect gallons of gore, but to keep things from feeling like a tireless trudge through bloodbath after bloodbath, Redwood has thrown in a few puzzles along the way that require a little brainpower."

Concluding the review, the mag says Dead Space is "the new benchmark to beat in survival horror that pushes the genre to twisted new heights and into the outer limits of space itself," before slapping it with a nice 9/10 score.

http://www.destructoid.com/elephant/...llchargers.gif

If given the option of only being able to charge my iPhone from the computer or the wall, I would always choose the wall. But the great thing about the iPhone is that both options are on the table. The same can’t be said for Sony’s wireless controllers, which require some sort of USB contact with a machine turned on. Thankfully, the problem of having to leave your PS3 on for the sake of charging is about to end ... in Japan. Sony has announced a wall charger for PS3 wireless controllers.

According to Engadget, the charger will be ready in mid-December for approximately $30. Sony hasn’t given any indication on western release as of yet.

I can’t say that I’m not disappointed, but I’m fairly certain that this item will hop across the pond at some point. I’ve always been mildly fearful that I’m in danger of burning down my house whenever I walk out with two controllers plugged in to my PS3. Anyone else think this is a good idea?
What a fucking joke. Why not just update the firmware to allow the USB ports to pass power while idle? I guess that way, they couldn't charge you $30 for this thing. Thanks, but I'll just continue to use my Wii or PC to battle this bit of proprietary nonsense.
