I have this on pre-order as well. Dunno if I'll bother with the Altair skin, though. I'm sure it'll be amusing at first but wear thin after a while.

Michael Corvin 12-01-08 02:17 PM

Damn!

9.3 from IGN
5 out of 5 from Gamepro

Wick 12-02-08 02:29 AM

Hopefully my EB Games pre-order will come in today so that I can play it tonight and on my day off tomorrow. It's good to see the review scores so high.

Michael Corvin 12-02-08 07:29 AM

Odd that it comes out today and there are only two reviews.

steebo777 12-02-08 08:30 AM

That is weird, I wonder why? I asked for it for Christmas, so hopefully it is sitting under my tree in a few weeks.

Michael Corvin 12-02-08 08:52 AM

Same here. Although isn't Ubisoft one of the companies that blacklisted EGM/1up? That could be why there is no review from them.

juanmgonzalez 12-02-08 09:08 AM

How about the Beyond Good and Evil skin?

RocShemp 12-03-08 06:37 PM

Would be kinda fun to play as a wall running Pey'j. :D

Dr Mabuse 12-04-08 06:21 AM

I think I'm stoked to play this one.

Michael Corvin 12-04-08 06:30 AM

I picked it up yesterday but haven't had a chance to play yet. Apparently Jade from BG&E is an unlockable skin when you finish the game. Not quite the same though. She looks much older and is desperately missing the green lipstick.

Did you get the limited edition version?

Michael Corvin 12-04-08 01:21 PM

Yes I did. Pre-ordered so I could get that original 'Prince' skin at Gamestop(9 digit & unique, fwiw). The LE was a bonus since there wasn't an upcharge. The game comes in the standard 360 case slipped into a cheap cardboard box. Not very impressive.

Cool, thanks. I was wondering what it came with, but it doesn't sound like anything too exciting. But since it was free, I guess you can't really complain.

FYI, in certain aspects of my work I deal with the art/paper industry, and the paper stock they used for that box is actually very expensive. Feel the texture of the paper and how it's sort of like suede, and certain highlights are slick? That's not cheap paper. I would estimate that that non-bulk production on a box like that would be about a dollar a unit, which is much more than the typical slipcase would be - even ones with holograms on them.

Michael Corvin 12-04-08 04:27 PM

I'm aware, not sure why I chose the word cheap. It's nice enough for cardboard, but compared to other LE tins and the like, this is more akin to a slipcover. Nothing too fancy. Nicer than nothing but not as good as other LEs out there.

There is a bonus DVD with the following on it:

Making of Featurette (12:00) - Nothing more than a fluff piece. Looks as if it was made around the time of the trailer. They basically only show game footage that was in that trailer... over and over again.

Digital Art Book - Missed opportunity here. It was clearly designed to be a physical printed book. Not quite the same looking at the images on screen. It would equate to a 60 page book.

Prima Hint Book - Appears to be the first chapter or two of the hint guide.

Soundtrack - Another missed opportunity. It's six tracks and from what I sampled it sounds like a killer soundtrack. Unfortunately it's on this DVD and does me no good.

Video -
  • Speed Art Drawing - Prince (2:00): pretty cool animation of creating the Prince in Photoshop.
  • Speed Art Drawing - Elika (2:00) - same as above
  • Speed Art Drawing - Hunter (2:30) - same as above
  • Art Video (1:40) - Kind of a history of the Prince told through still paintings
  • Development Diary (4:20) - A look at the Prince's new moves and combat system

Trailers - 3 PoP trailers from Ubidays, E3 & a Games Convention Walkthrough

RocShemp 12-06-08 12:36 AM

That's disappointing. But I guess I was foolish to expect much given it was a free LE. However, I truly expected the soundtrack to be a separate CD at the very least. :(

dvdsteve2000 12-06-08 02:46 PM

I picked this up yesterday but haven't played it yet...damn Fallout 3. Gonna give it a go, I hope it plays like Assassin's Creed.

redcat 12-07-08 11:12 AM

I got this yesterday and I'm really liking it so far. It feels weird to never actually "die" in the game (Elika swoops in and plants you back on your last spot if you fall) - it almost feels like you're cheating compared to other games. But in the end, I guess it actually makes sense. There's a lot less repetition to get back to the point where you died, which makes the whole thing less frustrating. I like the art style and the controls - it feels pretty immersive. The combat, which has been limited so far, feels tacked on and irrelevant due to the seeming inability to die I mentioned before. It turns into just mashing buttons until the fight ends. All in all, I'm really impressed with this as a platformer. The puzzles start out fairly simple and get progressively difficult at a rate that keeps me wanting to play.

pinata242 12-07-08 11:39 AM

Really, though, how is it any different than checkpoints? It just seems integrated into the story this time (like Vita-Chambers in Bioshock as freshest on my mind).

I agree that it's not really any different, other than the fact that it seems to always put you right back where you were (or very close), and checkpoints usually seem to require a little more backtracking. Either way, it's a positive thing overall. It makes the game feel a little smoother, and there's not even any load times to wait for.

dvdsteve2000 12-07-08 09:36 PM

Well, I put in about 80 minutes of playing, got 130 achievement points, and am cruising along. The 'back from the dead/never die' concept is pretty cool. I actually 'died' a couple times before I caught on that I actually was 'dying' and she was bringing me back. I'm not a cel-shading kind of guy, but it does look and play very smooth. The combat is kind of weak-you only use X for sword attack, A for acrobatic manuever like dodge/jump/etc..., RT to block/counter, and Y to get Elika to attack with magic.

What I really don't like is, the game basically tells you every move to make. Press A to wall climb, hold LS to move up, press X to attack, etc... It never goes away (so far). The game kind of feels like Assassin's Creed for Dummies. I don't think it warrants a purchase, but rent it (like I did) and play the Hell out of it for 5-7 days and I think you'll be good to go. There's an achievement for completing the game in under 12 hours so a rental should be all you need.

Once I got the hang of the new control scheme, I just went into the settings and turned the Tutorial to "off." That will take care of it.

mzupeman2 12-07-08 10:07 PM

I love the acrobat stuff, as always, but the combat controls feel really weak and tacked on. What happened to touch battles of three foes at a time and such? You get one enemy once in a blue moon, and you do the same thing throughout the whole game. Clear an area, collect stuff, clear an area, collect stuff, etc. Yet for someone, I'm still loving it. Go figure. This should be a terrible game in almost every common sensical way, but it's actually really cool.

The look, flow, and overall presentation are so good, that I don't mind the fact that I'm doing the same 4 things over and over. If you can hit your buttons right and keep moving in a fluid motion, it's pretty damn impressive looking. :)
