cel shading + realistic backgrounds = ugh.

Bring on JSRF: Next Gen! Cel shading rocks!

boredsilly 05-22-08 11:50 PM

So people don't like cel shading now? I personally love it! I was tempted to play those Naruto/DBZ games just because I thought they looked so good.

RocShemp 05-23-08 12:21 AM

I don't think I'ver liked cel shading. I liked the cartooby look and feel of Dragon Quest VIII but cel shading always makes me cringe.

RichC2 05-23-08 07:18 AM

DQ8 is cel shading.

The ones you're thinking of are just previous generations of the same thing. The goal has always (seemingly) to get the 2D handdrawn look on top of polygons to allow more freedom. DQ8 managed that in spades.

Noonan 05-23-08 07:29 AM

A lot of my friends hate cell shading but it's my favorite art style. Those pics look great.

Wind Waker, DQ8, and Rogue Galaxy =

RocShemp 05-23-08 08:37 AM

Well then that makes me love DQ8 all the more as the graphics were a big part of what set such a wonderful mood in the game.

Pretty much. You can add Jet Grind Radio (the first to perfect it), Sly Cooper, and to a much less extent X-men Legends. Cel shading for president!

Drexl 05-23-08 09:57 AM

I'm kind of mixed on cel shading. I think it's appropriate in some situations, but not in others. I'm not sure PoP is the right game for this.

At least current-gen cel-shaded games have the high resolution necessary for avoiding the thick outlines that plagued some of last generation's cell shaded games. Now at least they look natural.

However, they got it totally wrong because the Prince does not look anything like Jake Gyllenhaal.

I know that's a joke, but this is a different prince. they can make him look like whomever they want. :)

UncleGramps 05-23-08 10:47 AM

Those screenshots look amazing. Glad to see them taking a new artistic direction in the Prince of Persia series.

mattysemo247 05-23-08 01:40 PM

Looks pretty good. Reminds me of Auto Modellista. I guess I need to finish POP: The Two Thrones before this comes out.

I don't think anyone's mind has changed. If people used to like cel-shading, then they probably still do. Those that are complaining probably never liked cel-shading to begin with. Personally, I never liked cel-shading because I don't care for cartoons much and therefore don't like cartoony looking video games.

Just to note: You don't need to play the previous three games to understand this one. The "Sands of Time" trilogy is complete and done with. This new game is a brand new story with new characters.

It's like the entire game is in slo motion :p

Michael Corvin 07-15-08 08:50 AM

The PoP trailer is very reminiscent of the Assassin's Creed trailer.

Michael Corvin 11-21-08 08:40 AM

Don't like the looks of the new Prince? Play the entire game as the original Prince from Sands of Time, or Altair from Assassin's Creed.

From IGN:

November 20, 2008 - The Prince of Persia is leaping onto PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 the first week of December with a brand new look. This is an all new Prince, different both in appearance and attitude from the Prince of Sands of Time fame. But what if the new Prince's look just doesn't do it for you? Fear not. Today, Ubisoft announced the inclusion of alternate skins for the Prince. You can play the entire adventure as Altair, star of Assassin's Creed or as the classic Prince of Persia from Sands of Time.

To gain access to the Altair skin, you'll need to register (for free) at Ubisoft.com. Once you have a copy of Prince of Persia, link your Ubi account to your Xbox 360 Gamertag or PSN screen name to access the Altair skin. You can switch skins from the main menu. This is Altair, but rendered in POP's slick art style.

The Prince is in another castle.
Those who pre-order Prince of Persia from GameStop will get a code to access the Prince of Persia Classic skin. Pre-orders will also get a free upgrade to the Limited Edition game, which includes special packaging, a making-of video and the original soundtrack.

Altair searches for someone to pickpocket.
Ubisoft is mum as to what additional skins will be made available, but has confirmed that there will be additional skins for the Prince and Elika. Some might want to see a Sam Fisher skin, but we find it hard to imagine Ubisoft passing up the chance to let players experience Prince of Persia as a fighter jet from HAWX.

Drexl 11-21-08 08:55 AM

Yeah, but I think that for most people who don't like the look of the new prince, it's because of the art style, which is the same for the skins.

So, when are they releasing the Rayman skin? ;)

Michael Corvin 11-21-08 09:05 AM

I love the art style, so the skins are a nice option. I wonder if using a skin will affect cut scenes in any way.

slop101 11-21-08 10:47 AM

Honestly, I think it looks pretty bland - the textures are rather muddy and look very last-gen. The environments are sparse with simple, rudimentary geometry. Take away the high-resolution and it looks like a PS2 game.

UncleGramps 11-21-08 10:59 AM

Man...I don't need another game right now, but that art style is fantastic. I'll have to rent it.

pinata242 11-21-08 11:01 AM

I love the series and I like the art style, especially since the physics in the game are suspect. A hyper-real style, imo, helps sell the crazy acrobatics as feasible.

mdc3000 11-21-08 11:58 AM

I've got a preorder for this one and can't wait to play it... I'll definitely sign up to get that Altair skin too.

PopcornTreeCt 11-23-08 02:32 PM

Think I'll play this just to play as Altair.
