Pachter: Netflix, Microsoft To Partner For Xbox 360 Video Delivery?

Based on comments at a Wednesday Netflix analyst event suggesting the online video rental service’s focus on “internet-enabled video game consoles,” analyst firm Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter predicts that company has either already partnered or will partner with Microsoft to expand its online streaming capabilities.

The event follows a report in March in which a Netflix spokesman admitted that the company has recently polled its users on their potential interest in receiving streaming movie content via the Xbox 360.

Also, in its Q3 2007 call to analysts in October, Netflix said that it would consider delivering movies to its subscribers via internet-connected HD-DVD and Blu-ray devices, which include the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Pachter notes, “While there are three such consoles, only one (Microsoft's Xbox 360) has a sufficiently large installed base to make sense from a streaming partnership with Netflix.”

At the San Francisco event, which the company used to outline its revenue and subscriber growth strategy in the face of declining DVD demand, Netflix emphasized the importance of “Watch Instantly,” its free streaming service to be offered with its overall service package for DVD-by-mail subscribers.

Despite initial predictions that Netflix would hit a ceiling in subscriber growth at the 4-5 million level, Wedbush now believes can compete for a much larger customer base, especially if it offers products and services that differentiates itself from competitors. Said Pachter, “In our view, free streaming video is such a differentiated service, and Netflix can gain a competitive advantage by building an integrated product offering.”

Wedbush also believes that the company is investing heavily in building its online streaming capabilities to the point where it is both a market leader and a desirable partner for consumer electronics companies hoping to participate in “digital media convergence.”

Pachter concluded, “The competitive advantage of such an alliance is clear: Netflix customers who are Xbox Live members will have the ability to stream online content through their Xbox 360s directly to their televisions. The ability to do so is available without the Xbox 360, but requires a measure of technological sophistication and a high tolerance for failure.”

That's interesting news. Considering Microsoft has an online video download service with Xbox Live already. They seem like competing services to some degree. If this happens, I'm curious to see if the pricing structure remains the same.

Does Netflix offer HD downloads? I thought they didn't thus far. So those needing their HD fix would still have to rely on MS's service.

I'm looking at maybe picking up a 360 used. Does anyone know the difference between the model #s: b4j-00001 and b4j-00107?

I'm trying to steer my way to one of the newer models with the smaller chip and hdmi out if possible. Thanks a bunch!

RichC2 06-02-08 06:16 PM

b4j-00107 = has HDMI
b4j-00001 = does not have HDMI

tlwizard 06-02-08 06:36 PM

thank you very much!

Does anyone know if, say, I order an xbox 360 right now from a big respectable vendor like amazon, whether or not I'll receive the newer builds (with the smaller cpu)? I'd like to save on tax and order it online instead, if possible, but I don't want an older model...thanks!

After I play Guitar Hero, how do I switch controller 1 from the guitar to the regular controller for some XBLA gaming without switching off the console? Thanks! :D

Just turn off your guitar controller (if it's wireless) then turn on a regular controller.

GatorDeb 06-03-08 04:43 PM

It's wired.

Sign out of your profile using the guitar. Then sign in with the controller.

GatorDeb 06-03-08 04:51 PM

The problem is that the guitar never shuts off, so I sign out with the guitar, turn on the controller, and it turns on to controller 2, and doesn't let me sign on with it.

GuessWho 06-03-08 04:52 PM

Turn machine off, unplug guitar, plug machine in?

Then stand up and unplug it.

I do this all the time with my drum kit which also stays plugged in all the time. So when I turn on the controller it does take hte #2 spot - but you can sign in to any profile as long as it's not already in use.

It's not going to auto sign in, you might need to do a little extra work by selecting the profile you want.

Wash, rinse, repeat!

So no, other than turning off the console or unplugging the guitar there's no way to switch. Oh well. They should have a way to switch player 1 and 2 like the Wii does.

It's not a matter of just signing it in, controller 2 is inactive you cannot physically use it to sign in, so I haven't found a way to go from guitar->have regular controller as player 1.

Did you not read what I wrote? I do this all the time with the wired drum kit, and also have done it with two separate controllers as one is out of batteries.

At the dashboard, press the xbox button on the guitar. Press X to sign out. Put guitar down. Turn on other controller, it will indicate it is using quadrant 2. Press the guide button and then press X or something to sign into a profile.

It makes no difference that the quadrant the light is on in is #1 or 2 or 3 or 4. Each one can sign into a profile if there are more than one profiles.

Could you turn on the controller first and then the guitar? I think that would work - I don't remember GHIII being picky about the guitar needing to be controller 1, but I could be wrong. I don't usually switch around too much.

Jeremy517 06-03-08 05:03 PM

Turn system on with controller, wait, turn on guitar.

That works too. If I turn on the system with the controller and the drums are already plugged in, the controller takes quad 1, the drums quad 2.

1. Sign out with guitar.
2. Turn on regular controller (quadrant 2).
3. Regular controller is unresponsive and will not let me sign in into live

GatorDeb 06-03-08 05:09 PM

Thanks GoVegas and Jeremy517, that worked! :D
