They're also going to be adding new online challenges with the Cagney update. This is the stuff I've been waiting for. Freeburn challenges are my favorite part of the game.
Criterion announces 70 new Freeburn Challenges for its upcoming "Cagney" software update
We're pushing to bring you a completely fresh and a new way to play challenges. We’ve evolved the Freeburn Challenge experience in 3 major ways for "Cagney":
1. Multi Part Challenges
We've started to string together multiple challenges – this adds depth and allows you to play a heap of challenges in sequence.
Here's how it can work – 8 players hook up at the Observatory on White Mountain and head for the Rock Hole on South Mountain Drive taking in a long sequence of challenges. Jump over Dead Man’s Edge, hit the windmill jump, race through the tubes in the building site and nail the jump sequence leading to the rock hole.
That's the sequence we play-tested today. Because so many of us were crowding through the jumps they became completely chaotic and hilarious. Stacking it in first place then repeatedly watching your rivals slam into your crash debris as you try to restart caused some immense comedy moments. The carnage contributes to creating a constantly changing Freeburn Challenge environment – it's great fun.
But that's not all...
2. Timed Challenges
Each of our new Challenges has a time limit that really encourages cooperation. If the team doesn’t finish in time, everybody fails. It's co-operative, but there's a competitive edge too. We call out the player that performed best, so while everyone works together to get the best team time, they’re still competing against each other to be the first to finish.
3. Co-op Leaderboards
And finally, each Challenge has it’s very own Leaderboard. Once you’ve nailed the target time, you can compete to reach the top of the Leaderboard.
Here are some 2, 3 and 4 player examples that will be coming in Cagney.
Partners In Time - Here, you can see a 2-player Challenge. Charnjit and SteveW are trying to hit each other mid-air, before jumping over each other to beat the challenge. Charnjit wastes valuable seconds lining up for jump.
Rail Cars - This one's 3-player. Meet up at the yellow bridge then head to the Read Lane Super Jump and complete the barrel rolls. This is always harder when the pressure is on, in the video you’ll see Charnjit miss his first attempt!
Leaps of Faith - And finally, everyone meets up at Charnjit Communications Tower and then rushes to N. Rouse Drive to hit the Super Jumps down to the train track 5 times. DiscoD ends up being the fastest to the jump and contributing the most overall!

I've just started playing this and I dont like this blue "haze" at the bottom of the screen. Does this have the potential to damage my plasma? Anyone have any problems with this?

The new updates are fantastic. I've given up on the elite license as those last 5 events have proven impossible to complete and had stopped playing, but this update will get me back. Playing Marked Man and Road Rage online against real people kicks so much ass.
On top of that they have made some great updates to the main game. Custom Soundtracks and a bunch of new classic music tracks to drive to. The menus have been tweeked and the news page is much better with weather from around the world. They have also tweeked the cars and improved the engine sounds. The cop F1 racer now has working sirens and CB chatter. My only question is how to unlock the new car. Still trying to figure that one out.
Okay. I read the PS Blog and apparently getting the new cars is going to be a complete pain in the ass. You have to win an online event on a certain day to get the Hunter Olympus for instance. That means I will never have access to the new vehicles which sucks. I'm not some guy that plays these games online non stop to master every turn and those are the only people that win these online events.

It's probably just my fanboyism shining through, but I'm so glad to see a major 3rd party publisher finally show the PS3 some love. Criterion has really come through for PS3 users.
We get the Cagney update a couple of weeks before the 360, we got the save game analyzer, and we will get retroactive trophies. I believe Cagney also gave us access to play our own in-game music and it also now allows 1080i support for tvs that don't do 720p, making it one of the very few disc based games that allows both of those features.
Now, if we could just get some of the other major developers to quit treating PS3 owners like red-headed step children, life would be so much better.

If you and/or other people are down, I'd be willing to do that on saturday.

I've been playing online a bit this weekend and many of the online challenges for 8 people take cooperation to pull off. It is really nice when you get a good group that works together to get stuff like aerial takedowns done, but unfortunately you also get the occasional person that keeps screwing everything up. They have had the Carbon vehicles available so you can try them out this weekend. That is a nice feature. I'm still trying to complete my online challenge sets to unlock the cars.

Found a nice little shortcut yesterday. I was trying to complete all the record times for every road, but all the freaking traffic was kicking my ass on some of them. I switched the game to online and created a room and made it invite only so no one else could join. This cut the traffic in half and I was easily able to beat every road to get another achievement and a new Carbon car. I'm working on the Showtime now for every road.
I'm at 95% complete now with 4 events standing in my way of getting the Elite. I've got to find a way to finish those last two races and stunt runs. The races are brutal though since they go all the way through downtown with wall to wall traffic. I've failed both at least 50 times already. I haven't got 100% on a game of this size in ages and I would love to do it.

Since using turbo keeps your multiplier going, all you have to do in order to keep the stunt run going indefinitely after the run timer expires is to let off the gas completely, and just tap the turbo button every time the multiplier timer is about to run out. Doing this makes you go slow enough that it's very easy to avoid crashing -- just make sure to hit any small jump and go through any gas station on your way to wherever you're headed, in order to keep your turbo filled. I passed almost every stunt run using the same route.
Just got done being the guy that screws up the challenge for everyone. All the other guys hit the jump through the red hoop at the airport, but even though I have done it many times before I couldn't hit the jump. Probably missed it 20 times before I just did everyone a favor and left. God I suck.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - THIS IS THE BEST PS3 GAME EVER! Now that I have my huge playlist that I use as my custom soundtrack, this slams! Nothing like racing around to Immigrant Song, Hella Good, Aero Dynamik, Ain't We Funkin' Now, and many others!

I really loved GTA IV and The World Ends With You on the DS, but this is my game of the year. I've played it more than any other game this year and will probably still be playing it next year.

The 40X stunt run combo. I'm hoping there is a video or something online to show a good route to take for this.
Surviving Marked Man with the Krieger Racing WTR. Edit: Nevermind. I passed this easy. Just do the Marked Man event Strikeout. Boost straight ahead and hit the ramp to the right onto the tracks. Follow it around to a super jump. When you land boost straight to another ramp in the middle of the street back up to the safety of the tracks. You will jump off the end here and continue straight into the finish. They will have little chance of taking you down even once.
Outside of that just the final achievement for getting everything.
Now online I have a ton. I'm only about 80 or so in out of 420. Online will take me awhile. BTW, the new car (Nakamura Rai-jin Turbo RWD) is available today to drive online. It is fast, but has no boost. It is also kind of fragile. I like it though and wish we could have it in the offline game as well.
BTW, looking at the Criterion website it looks like the Hunter Olympus will be online only as well. I expect to see a lot of them playing Road Rage when it debuts on the 26th.

I guess they figure the new vehicles are overpowered and they don't want them used to win events in the offline game.
I did finally 100% the game. A rarity for me and speaks to how much I really enjoyed this game despite its flaws. I used Falling Down as my starting point for the 40X combo and ended at the Quarry. It also took me three hours to get a 40X run which either speaks to how hard this is to do or how bad I am at Burnout. None the less I have Platinum cars to tool around in and the only thing left for me is to 101% the game by finishing two sets of online challenges. This will probably take the longest. It is hard to get a good group to complete a set of 50 challenges. I have 100 or so total, but they are split up among all the different sets.
By the way, the timed challenges are a complete joke. You really have to know the people you are working with to pull these off. Most of the time someone screws it up. I've probably started 40 of these and only completed 1. When the host starts picking these I now leave and look for something else to do online. I've not a big fan of online Road Rage or Marked Man. The lag always seems to make me miss and them to catch me from out of no where. Not sure if the lag is me or them, but I never notice it in the regular challenges.

I didn't find any mention of this in the thread, but apparently there are some special unlock codes for various cars. If you go into your under the hood menu, there should be a spot called "sponsor codes." In that section you can enter "bestbuy" "walmart" "gamestop" and also "circuitcity". There is another unlockable "Steel Wheels" car that is basically an armor plated GT Concept. The code for that one is not as easy apparently (I haven't tried it yet) but one of these codes should work "Q83E 3H1S BI3B 40P4" or "E60J 8Z7T MS8L 51U6"
Steel Wheels looks like a full out new car while the Best Buy ones I believe are really skins on old cars.
