Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
I'm up to 74%. Not sure how close to the end of the game I am, but I've been pretty lucky with the stage battles. For the most part, I just fly around and spawn guys to send into battle. I'll land every once in a while to do a face melter in the middle of a large group or to build a merch stand. I think the only battle I've had to do more than once was the first appearance of the goths. I assumed they had a base to destroy and ended up dragging all my guys out into the middle of no man's land, only to have a bunch of assholes come in behind me and trash my stage before I could get everyone back.

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
I rented the game and liked it for the most part, but the RTS parts will keep me from finishing it. I don't like RTS and even the simplified RTS of this game is too annoying for me to play. My son is on the Bladehenge battle now and just watching how annoying the battle is will probably keep me from even playing the game again. I love that Shaffer put all of these different play types in the game and that the mission types are really mixed up, but that can also be a downside if you hate one of those and it is a key component of the game. Like other people here I also have a hell of a time telling the enemies from my troops in the midst of a battle. It is weird because I love almost everything about this game except actually playing the RTS parts.

Both of these have been frustrating for me too. It's also annoying that there's no easy way to define a distant target, and newly-generated units are on the opposite end of the battlefield and won't join me unless I zip over there first. C'mon, the characters have walkie-talkies...why can't they use 'em?
I'm also in the "lack of a mini-map is annoying" camp. There is a rally flag solo so that you can make all newly spawned units come to the flag. There is also one that will call all troops to you no matter where they are on the map. |
Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
I really like the fact that this game doesn't fit neatly into the "Action RPG" box or the "RTS" box. And I think the way Schafer has blended the genres really works well.

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
I beat this yesterday and it stays enjoyable right up to the end. I'm not a metal fan at all, but I'd buy a soundtrack to this game. Just a whole lot of fun. The biggest key to the stage battles for me was to be patient. If you spend the first five to ten minutes gathering souls, upgrading your stage and building an army, it's pretty easy to wipe out anything it throws at you. My only small complaint with the game is I wish beating it unlocked some sort of homing device or map for finding the collectibles. I'm missing two statues and one legend and am guessing it'd take hours to find them, even if I looked up a map online.

Brutal Legend DLC Map Pack Coming Next Month
Tears of the Hextadon drips onto Xbox Live on November 3 for 400 Microsoft Points ($5). While PlayStation 3 owners might need to wait a torturous extra two days until November 5, the DLC will be completely free there until November 19, costing $5 thereafter. Microsoft ripping off there customers again, while Sony does it the right way. |
Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
Are those just Stage battle maps?

Is this your typical standard of measure? If you have to pay for something the company is "ripping you off" and if it's free the company is doing it the "right way"? Or does it only pertain to videogames?

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
Isn't more Sony being nice (or desperate depending on your view) rather than Microsoft being garish?

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
ok ok I get it :D2:, maybe ripping off was the wrong word to use. Shoot me. :suicide: I own 2 360, and prefer the 360. I was just upset.

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
Are you guys talking about Signed In, the excellent Xbox 360 podcast? I'm currently listening to the latest episode, which, by the way, features a lengthy discussion of Brutal Legend (the topic of this very thread). How's that for synergy? ;)

DO NOT LISTEN TO SIGNED IN. The guy says he'll pay you for drumming up publicity on internet message boards and then backs out all of a sudden. -ohbfrank-

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
I just started the game last night and I'm really loving it. Although I can see where the frustration for the RTS element comes in, since I just had my first stage battle. But mixing up the gameplay, the humor, and the environment are all really awesome.
Can't wait to hear the new Signed In, although the lack of pay for typing that is disappointing. |
Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
In my experience, the stage battles are a ton of fun if things are going well for you. Once you get the hang of how to play them effectively, they are great.

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
Yeah, once I realized that I was creating new units but leaving them at the stage, it got a lot more fun.

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
I look at it this way. Sony is giving it out free, but so what. We don't get the monstrous deals that 360 members get with their arcade games. The deals on psn content are few and far between, while 360 is always giving up good deals for the content. I really do wish that sony would cough up some more deals on psn content.

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
I just started this last night. I really like it. but I'm not to the stage battles yet. I'm not big on RTS, sop we'll see. I find the lack of a better map system frustrating though.
