Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
It's $39.99 at Fry's until next Thurday, per today's ad.
I'm really curious to see what people who've have it for weeks think about it now. I guess I wonder if it's like with Scribblenauts where the newness is exciting for a few days before dissatisfaction sets in. I listened to superfro's podcast and they kept talking about how awesome the game is, but the more detail they went into, the less awesome it sounded -- to the point where I'm not sure I'd even enjoy it. At that price, I'm not risking much by buying it, but it's not like I'm lacking in new games right now and if I won't enjoy it much or if it's too difficult or tedious to really have much fun with, it probably isn't worth me getting it this year. |
Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
If you're not a super-metalhead, you won't get as much out of it. With that said, I am a super-metalhead and enjoyed the world and atmosphere of the game and think they fucking nailed it so well. However, the RTS and stage battles (which make up that majority of the story) did little for me. I don't think that the 3rd person action and the RTS genres mesh well together. Also, if you don't like collect-a-thons, it's gonna be a pretty short ride.
If you want to support Tim Shafer and metal, then pick it up. Otherwise, it's at least worth a rental. I doubt I'll revisit the whole game and just pick up the couple single-player achievements I missed in a bit and shelve it. |
Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
I'm not a super metalhead, though I'm finding I like metal more than I thought I did. More importantly, I really enjoy this game. I like the story, I like the gameplay, I like the sense of humor. I don't regret buying it even a little.

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
I'm with the people who are saying the RTS elements killed the game. Definitely not my cup of tea. Wish I could trade it in and get Borderlands instead.

Heads-up : The new DLC pack, TEARS OF THE HEXTADON, which is 400 points on the XBLA Markteplace is FREE on the PSN for two weeks. It's a very small download, 108 KB.

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
The characters, setting and fighting are great in this game but the RTS is not.

Brütal Legend TEARS OF THE HEXTADON Map Pack expands the addictive Brütal Legend Xbox LIVE experience with two new maps. In "Circle of Tears", vile waters have carved a rough-hewn circular battlefield into a forsaken land that players must circumvent to destroy their opponent. In "Death's Fjord", players find themselves on an icy mountain pass. A dense cluster of fans lie below, waiting to be harvested by those brave enough to capture them without cover from enemy attack. BONUS: includes a free axe, the Blade of Ormagöden. There are no refunds for this item. For more information, see www.xbox.com/live/accounts. Why is it free on PSN and not 360? |

We PS3ers, we got 'em and those particular BALLS aren't allowed on a 360. Warhawk has no business in the Brutal Legend thread, but it's here anyway! But seriously though, it's nice that at least one developer throws us a bone every once in awhile. I understand that every day can't be Locksley Day, but we need some love too. |
Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
Just finished this up yesterday. The final RTS battle pissed me off until I finally managed to get past it, though the stuff after that was pretty cool. The game is super stingy with the achievements, so I'll probably spend a bit more time on the side missions and hidden relics, etc. to get more sweet, sweet points.

How close am I to the end? |
Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
Not close at all.
You're maybe halfway through the game, if memory serves. |
Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
The RTS has kept me from wanting to go back and finish this game. Everything else about the game is pretty sweet but the RTS just leaves a sour taste in my mouth and is just not fun at all.

Hammer of Fate DLC coming 12/17: http://www.destructoid.com/brutal-le...d-157368.phtml
A second piece of Brutal Legend DLC is slated to hit PSN and Xbox LIVE soon -- as in December 17th, soon. Dubbed “Hammer of Infinite Fate,” the content adds several new Eddie Riggs outfits, a few item upgrades, and four fresh multiplayer maps. Sounds f'ing metal, right? Below are some quick-hits. * The three new outfits for Eddie Riggs are as follows: Mountain Man, Black Metal, and Zaulia Threads. Seven more back patches and even new paint for the Deuce are coming as well. * Those having trouble locating all the serpents should be pleased with the “Oculus of the Lost,” one of the new items introduced by "Hammer of Infinite Fate." The Oculus operates like a GPS, pointing out the locations of these numerous and sometimes well-hidden stone beasts. (Sorry, GameFAQs.) * Purchasers will also be able to get their hands on three fresh (and sharp) weapons: the Eye of Sorrow, The Disgorger, and the Coiling Maw. * New Achievements and Trophies. * And finally, the four new maps are: the Altar of Blood, Coiled Remains, Crucible of the Titans, and the Amplified Cliffs. All of which will supposedly pack an “in-game element of surprise,” according the official release. The DLC is slated to hit at 480 Microsoft Banana Dollars over Xbox LIVE and around five bucks ($4.99) over PSN, which seems like a rather rad deal. How many of you are interested in this? Pass. |
Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
I will probably get this. I'm not much into multiplayer, but the new weapons and Oculus sounds pretty cool.

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
well i picked up the game for 5 bucks a couple of days ago. i read that there were some RTS parts in the game, but I had no idea that there was this much. I have always disliked RTS games. I love metal and Shafers games, but I probably won't finish this one.

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
The RTS battles in this game are not that hard... not sure why so many people had problems with them.

Re: Tim Schafer's new game: Brutal Legend
I was mixed on this one. I also love Tim Shafer's work, have ever since the classic LucasArts adventures games like Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island and Grim Fandango. And Psychonauts was a superb blending of that style with a more open-world 3D vibe.
That said, there are many excellent things about Brutal Legend that made it fun, but what was lacking was actually the story. Seems like they had to take a lot of shortcuts in the overall arc of what happened in order to make it fit the deadline and budget, and that's what really hurt. Some of the turns were just so sudden, it wasn't believable, and really took you out of the flow. Especially at the end; it seemed there was an entire final act that was cut out, and they fast forwarded to the final fight. A real shame too, it would have been great to have more Tim Curry and less Ozzy. But definitely worth playing, and again I credit Tim for being incredibly innovative and original with his ideas. |
