Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)

Regarding Megaman: I would also add the ports on the GameCube are not as pixel perfect as the ones on Wii. The perfection of Virtual Console emulation, especially in regards to sound and correct resolution, is definitely a factor in some people buying them on the Wii.

Nothing of interest this week for me, but I wanted to put in a good word for Alphabounce on DSi. This came out last week on DSiWare and its pretty enjoyable. If you like Arkanoid type games this one is worth the 500 point cost. Tons of levels and powerups with RPG features to make upgrading your ship and traveling to different planets a bit more interesting. This game is much better at 5 bucks than the DS version of Arkanoid I paid $20 for.

Also this game officially runs my DSi out of space so I guess I'm either done buying DSiWare games or I have to start cleaning the fridge and deleting stuff. F&@king Nintendo.

Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)

I went on a buying spree this weekend. Picked up a few cards 50% at Target (giving me 6 total just collecting dust). Nabbed Donkey Kong Country and my daughter loves it. She's been on a NSMBWii kick lately so her automatic response to picking up barrels is to shake the controller, even in DKC. Pretty funny. Grabbed Donkey Kong, Mario 2: Lost Levels, Mario 2 (US) and F-Zero X as well. I still have 5 cards left.

The only ones that matter are I-III anyway so that's a $15 savings!

That's true, Michael Corvin.

Darkside, I had no idea about this "pixel perfect" VC emulation versus the Gamecube ports. How accurate / inaccurate are they?

The old blister pack cards have been on clearance for a few weeks now, so a huge YMMV at this point. I found a local target that had 3-4 dozen last week at $13. I waited until they hit $10 and there were only a few left.

how does the old blister packs look? I've been using the $10 off $20 coupon for Kmart to get them (plus a $.35 gum to make it past $20). I need to check out target but i need to know what they look like.

This is something I'm not an expert on, but I have read articles talking about it and they mention it frequently on Retronauts.

M2 is the company that handles many of the games emulated on virtual console and they have a reputation for doing nearly flawless emulation in Japan as apparently the Japanese are very picky about this. As opposed to the US where companies like Backbone/Digital Eclipse have handled many XBLA versions and disc collections that have a reputation among the hardcore of being very sloppy emulations. The thing I usually see complained about is sound. I know many of the Genesis collections I have tried over the years have a tinny sound. It is apparently one of the hardest things to emulate and is usually near perfect on VC. The other thing is resolution. Many disc collections are modified to run on the resolution of the console. Wii has the ability to output the original resolution of the hardware being emulated so things look pretty close to exactly the way they originally did.

I don't have specifics on the Mega Man games. I played through them all on the GameCube collection and didn't have issues. I think people really into these though can find minor flaws in the Cube or PS2 version that was not present on the original or VC versions.

The one system complained about on the VC is the TG16. That apparently isn't as tightly emulated on VC as the other systems if the TG16 hardcore can be believed.

Damn, you got the K-Mart thing to work... and still using it?

The ones on clearance are the ones that have the card in the plastic bubble/packaging. All the new cards are just like gift cards on the rack, like Live and PSN cards.

Meanwhile, the "Big Name Games" section of the WarioWare™: D.I.Y. series continues to offer new downloadable microgames created by the industry's most talented designers. This week's entry comes from Edmund McMillen of Team Meat, the studio behind the upcoming Super Meat Boy, which launches for the WiiWare service this summer. New "Big Name Games" will be added every Monday through July 26, all available to download for zero Nintendo DSi Points™ to anyone with broadband Internet access and a copy of either WarioWare: D.I.Y. for the Nintendo DS™ family of systems or WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase software for the WiiWare service. Visit the Nintendo Channel on your Wii system today to learn more about these games and to see a video of Edmund McMillen creating his original microgame, Meat Boy!

As a special bonus this week, Nintendo Channel visitors can also access a free demo version of the game Picross 3D™ for the Nintendo DS family of systems. This remarkable new puzzle game is easy to play but hard to put down. It combines the fun of crossword puzzles and sudoku with delightful 3-D images. I've owned a Turbo Duo since they were released, back in 93. I've downloaded two releases on VC from that library: Castlevania: Dracula X(Rondo Of Blood) & Bonk 3. It's not 100% perfect...but it's certainly more than adequate and an awesome job of emulation. Honestly, I couldn't be happier and I will be purchasing more TG16 games in the future.

The only notch against TG16 games on Virtual Console is that most games have a soft look to them, as opposed to the crisp, pixel perfect look of every other system. Ys I & II does not suffer this problem however. I don't know if they changed the emulation at this point or if it was simply the fact that Ys I & II was one of the very few games on the system to use a higher horizontal pixel resolution and thus led itself to scaling better.

Everything else you said is spot on though. M2 are kings.

With more than 1,000 jewel-filled puzzles, this fun collection will challenge your mind and push your skills to the limit.

I think Zombie Panic in Wonderland looks promising, but another pretty underwhelming week and no VC. The Wario Ware games are about all I look forward to downloading lately.

Until recently, I thought the same thing about Dracula X/Rondo of Blood. I do believe since DK 64 is a Nintendo made title, it will come around eventually. I am troubled though by the lack of VC titles lately. There is a ton more they can put out there without adding new systems. But I guess they want to stagger things.

Your Donkey Kong is my Contra...with a side of Sunset Riders. If I got those two, I'd pretty much be happy and complete with the VC library.

With full Mii™ character support you can really bring your games to life. Start by practicing with some casual games, then work your way up in fully Elo-rated matches. With all of these game-play options, you're in for some serious chess action.
Photo Dojo is free for a month and is obviously a must download for anyone with a DSi. Sadly there is no VC again. Also, Phoenix Wright 3 is a fantastic game, but many people do not like the DS emulator that is used to play these on Wii. The game is well worth 1000 points if you can deal with that aspect.

In a strategic twist, Kirby can now give up an acquired ability and use it to turn an enemy into a helper. The helper will follow Kirby around and automatically fight as his ally or offer a second player the chance to join in the game by controlling it. There’s never a dull moment as Kirby dashes, flies and swallows enemies in his battle against King Dedede, Dyna Blade and Meta Knight.
Good week. bit.trip and if you didn't buy the DS version Kirby Super Star is excellent.

Next week is Metal Torrent, FINALLY.

Oh, if you don't want to spring for the DS version, Kirby Super Star is FANTASTIC. It's also a GREAT co-op game.

Going to download Looksley, but have to clean the refrigerator out. Really wish we could get a play from SD card update for the DSi.

I'm hoping for it at E3, but unlike WiiWare, the stuff I've moved over to SD I probably won't use again (so far, at least).

My first casualty is Art Style Zengage and it wasn't very good. I like all my other games though so I will probably have to delete something I like but have played through like Mighty Flip Champs.

I've never tested this, but I'm assuming if I copy a game to the SD card it is also copying my save progress. There is no separate save file so I'm assuming it gets saved in with the game like a normal DS game. Anyone actually tested this theory?

BTW, I like Looksley so far, but I'm having major issues getting the head tracking to work all the time. It is very hit and miss. I'm guessing I have to sit in an extremely bright room for this game to really work.

Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)

I don't know if I've tested it, but I do beleive the saves are part of the whole file you're moving over.

I could test it later on tonight if you want confirmation.
