VC Update for 5/18 - 300th Game Edition:
Virtual Console
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Nintendo 64, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Cartoon Violence, 1,000 Wii Points™): Link™ must save the world! This time, he finds himself trapped in Termina, an alternate version of Hyrule that is doomed to destruction in just three short days. Link must race to recover the Ocarina of Time (which allows him to manipulate time in multiple ways), defeat challenging bosses in dungeons spread across Termina and discover the key to the mystery of Majora's Mask. Along the way, he'll obtain new weapons and items and help other characters (some strangely familiar) in their everyday lives. In addition, Link must use a wide assortment of masks scattered throughout Termina, each with its own specific use or power. Never before have three days offered so much in the way of action, mind-boggling puzzles and depth. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is an adventure unlike any other!
Nintendo DSiWare
Art Style™: PiCTOBiTS™ (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Nintendo DSi Points™): Your goal in Art Style: PiCTOBiTS is simple: clear large blocks that fall from above ("megabits") by combining them with "bits" (square blocks) of the same color. Add in the ability to pick up bits and place them anywhere on the touch screen, and you'll quickly find that strategy is critical to your success. By clearing the bits, you gradually reveal each stage's hidden game character - look for favorites from classic NES™ titles - and earn coins that can be spent to unlock DARK stages or to listen to the game's soundtrack in MUSIC mode. This grand mix of familiar elements and new game play leads to the uniquely enjoyable experience that is PiCTOBiTS.
WiiWare
CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R2 (SQUARE ENIX, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): In CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R2, you must deploy various units, such as Fencers and Black Mages, to stop waves of encroaching monsters from escaping the area with your party's crystals. There are many types of units to choose from: Some specialize in powerful short-range attacks, some wield far-reaching magicks and still others are equipped with bows, enabling them to bring down aerial foes. Deploy units in strategic locations to take full advantage of their traits. Each time an enemy breaches your defenses and reaches a map's exit, your party will lose crystals. When all your crystals are gone, the game is over. CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R2 offers several new, challenging maps containing multiple entrances and exits. It also introduces three varieties of Power Crystals, allowing you to enhance the abilities of your units, while new jobs, including Flintlock and Tinker, set the stage for even more complex strategies. Can you defend all the maps without losing a single crystal?
Silver Star Chess (Agetec, Inc., 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Suggestive Themes, 500 Wii Points): Silver Star Chess has two modes: 1-Player and 2-Player. 1-Player mode allows you to play a chess match against the computer opponent. 2-Player mode allows you to play against another person. In 1-Player mode, you can select one of five different computer opponents, as well as turn the background music off, adjust sound effects and access in-game help features. Also, during the match, you can redo your last move, save the game at any point or resign from the game. After the match has ended, you can review each move made during the match. While reviewing the match in this way, you can resume that match at any point.

Figured we would get Majora's Mask for the 300th VC title. I already have it for the Cube though so it isn't a must. PiCTOBiTs however, looks very cool. I will have to watch some videos of that one.
Big thumbs down to Square for breaking Crystal Defenders into 3 pieces and charging 800 points each.

I just watched a gameplay video of Pictobits on YouTube. It doesn't seem mind-blowing, but it looks like a solid, simple puzzle game with an 8-bit Nintendo aesthetic:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZJJgzi0IbIM&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZJJgzi0IbIM&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
For $5, I'll definitely be getting it.

Yeah, but it is one that "technically" is ALREADY available on the system....anyone can pop in that GC Zelda compilation disc and have already been playing it for the past two and a half years....come on Nintendo, this one a week crap REALLY needs to stop.....

The time-limit restrictions really killed any potential Majora's Mask had for me. It was a frustrating disappointment back when it came out, I can't imagine revisiting it today.

I thought it was ingenious. I loved that game, but don't need it on the VC (yet) as I still have a good copy of the compilation disc.

The GameCube version of Majora's Mask has a few bugs in the emulation, but the freeze bug is the one that really sucks, it's pretty game-breaking due to the game's save system (you only permanent save after a three day cycle).

I feel the same. I have the N64 and Cube version, but have never made it very far in either. I do not like games with time limits like this no matter how good the other parts of the game are.

I never made it far into MM for the same reason. The time limit sucked. On the flipside I enjoyed Pikmin with the timer (versus Pikmin 2 w/o) and Dead Rising.

Never played Majora's Mask so I'll probably donate some money to Nintendo to give it a try.

Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)
I never got the time complaint for Majora's Mask. Once you use the slow time song you have THREE HOURS to do whatever you need to do before restarting the cycle and there's all of FIVE tasks in the game that require any time to complete.. the four dungeons and the three day trading quest. If you need more than three hours to do something, you're probably doing it wrong.
When Wind Waker came out, people were crying like petulant children for a "dark matooor lol" Zelda like Ocarina of Time.. which had NOTHING dark or mature about it. It was still an ageless fairy tale like the ones before it. I suppose the game's color palette made it seem mature to those people? I never got the obsession with that argument. Majora's Mask, on the other hand, is one of Nintendo's most mature efforts. But I don't know if people in the gaming community understand that as it's a thematic mature and not a roided space marine blood and gore with lots of shits and fucks mature.
If you've never played or completed Majora's Mask and/or thought Twilight Princess was stale.. go back and give this game another whirl. Don't be afraid of the time limit. The three day trading quest to reunite the couple is a combination of one of the most touching yet most disturbing moments I've ever come across in a video game. And the feeling of despair of the entire game's world during the third day is just chilling. The dungeons. Oh man, the dungeons. There's only four in the game but they are EASILY the best designed in the ENTIRE Zelda series. The puzzles revolving around using each mask form's abilities are just incredible, especially if you go for collecting all of the hidden fairies in each dungeon. THE SOUNDTRACK. I dare you to walk around clock town in the game's final hours, talk to the townspeople with that creepy music playing in background and not fall into a cold sweat. AH FUCK IT. I'm going to buy it again myself.. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about how amazing this game is, it's might be one of the best Nintendo has ever created.. certainly one of the most ambitious.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I have the disc version just haven't felt the need to give it another shot.
I definitely fall into this category:
Ocarina is the pinnacle, MM lost me with the time & mask gimmicks(gave up after a few hours). Wind Waker was good but I thought the cel shading was misused(and sailing sucked). I gave up on Twilight Princess about 8 hours in. The Phantom Hourglass was the most fun I've had in Hyrule since Ocarina.
I definitely fall into this category:

It's not that I need more time - it's the psychological effect of a time clock behind the hole game, ticking away at the back of my mind that sours the whole experience - it distracts and keeps me from getting into the game.
