Thanks for the info, brianluvdvd and Decker

Does anybody know of any B&M deals on a new Xbox 360 this (or next) week? I'm probably picking one up for my friend's birthday tonight and was wondering if somebody had something going on or if I should wait until Sunday for something else, etc. I can't check CAG at work, so..

Decker 10-05-07 09:09 AM

Damn, Pixy. Everyone should have a friend like you. I hope this friend saved your life or put you up for several months or bought you beer when you were under age or did you or something. Anyway, no new console deals this week or next. New bundle should be out by the end of the month, but not yet.

Here's the coupon from CC for $40 off $200. It does say it excludes consoles, but people are saying they've got it to work for them.

One (or more) of you have a Samsung LNT4661, right? I'm looking for a 37-42" LCD for my sister, and wanted to keep it at $1200 or under, but if the LNT4061 is really THAT good, I'd consider ponying up the extra ~$300ish.

Any info on your set I should know about (will be used with 360 and DirecTV)? And any ideas of best prices? Thanks.

pinata242 10-05-07 09:24 AM

I like my 4661. Can I justify it over something else to you? No... It depends on what your sister notices/needs. I think it has great blacks for an LCD and a nice matte screen (whereas the 4665 was too glossy and reflective). It looks great on my 360, PS3, Wii, and cable box in any lighting.

PixyJunket 10-05-07 09:28 AM

I got my 4661 from Amazon for two Clevelands. I heard that Consumer Reports voted it best LCD in their November issue and second best flat panel overall. I have to imagine there's something better out there but quality to cost on this set is insane. The blacks and colors are UNREAL for an LCD, I've got my gaming settings very bright and poppy and the thing still has inky blacks on dark scenes with none of the backlight showing through (set at 8 out of 10 even).

Also if you buy at CC you can get their Gamer Card (10% all game related purchases for a year, $20 value) free.

PixyJunket 10-05-07 10:00 AM

I've only got a B&W laser printer at work, I don't think I'd be able to use that coupon. :(

I might check into the 10% thing though.

PixyJunket 10-05-07 10:16 AM

You know, I really want Quake I on XBLA. 1080p the graphics, tweak the controls ala Halo to allow it to work as best as possible with the controller and viola. You've got my 800 points. It's still my favorite FPS of all time, I still run through the single player mode every year or so (using FuhQuake to "modern" it up a bit).

So the GOTY version doesn't save any hard disk space, the extra stuff still gets saved to your hard drive? I was going to pick up the GOTY for that reason.

GatorDeb 10-05-07 11:54 AM

GiantRobo- you forgot I'm from Brazil? Shame on you! ;)

+1 to whoever remembers where I'm really from

Oh, and wow you sounded younger than I expected... I thought you were in your 50's and you sounded 20-ish.

I picked it up a few weeks ago and I really like it. It's much more convenient than using a wireless USB keyboard, the price is reasonable, and it works perfectly.

GatorDeb 10-05-07 12:06 PM

Whose great idea was it to put a headset connector with a CABLE going off of it on the bottom of the controller?

edstein 10-05-07 12:09 PM

It's better than the cable coming off the top. I like it.

GatorDeb 10-05-07 12:10 PM

But you can't rest the controller on your stomach.

Yes - I've got one, and really like it as well.

Decker 10-05-07 12:31 PM

Deb, there is a wireless headset. It sells for $59.99. Originally, they apparently weren't very good, but they've been redesigned and I've heard they're better now.

They also come in fancy Halo versions for those that can't get enough olive green accessories.

Maybe someone who has one can post an impression.
------------------------

Those who bought a QWERTY keypad, what do you use it for? I'm sure it would make entering codes a lot easier, but I do that so rarely. If the 360 could browse like the PS3 (or the Wii, or the PSP) I would get it in a heart beat, but I don't use Windows Messenger and can't really think of a good use for it.

GatorDeb 10-05-07 12:34 PM

Hey Decker you never replied what you do for a living :D I saw the wireless ones but $60 is an outrage. When my two current headsets break from laying them on my stomach, then maybe I'll bite.

The messenger thing would be great to send messages to people. As it is, I just send voice messages.

Yup, load once onto your HD and you're done. I'm sure the GOTY versions will be all over ebay since the second disc is unnecessary after the first load and the first disc is just the same as a regular cheap Oblivion disc. If you could rent or borrow disc 2 for a half-hour you'd be good. I wish you could save the hard disc space, but you can't.

I use it for sending messages to other people on Live. I find it easier to type out a message on the pad than to record a voice message and play it back to make sure it sounds okay. Plus you can type a fairly long message, whereas a voice message is limited to (I think) 15 seconds.

Deb, I'm a physician. I've told you where I work and what sort of physician I am over Live, you just don't remember, apparently. We'll talk this weekend.

The keyboard sounds cool, but it's too big an expense for the limited benefit it provides, for me at least. Ditto the wireless headset.
