I think the general concensus is that it is one of the best side-scrolling platform games in existence. If you like side-scrolling platform games, then I'm sure its worth the $8.

Super Metroid is probably the most well-designed 2D adventure ever. It is also probably the easiest Metroid game there is, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the save points, they're just there to let you stop playing for a bit.

I really loved Metroid for the Gameboy. How come no one ever brings that up? I must have beaten that thing like 3 times on that crappy green screen.

Outside of Super Metroid, Fusion is my favorite, but this one is a close third.

I tried to play Metroid 2 on emulator, and found it nigh unplayable...in spite of the fact that I generally love Metroid games. Perhaps it was just meant to be handheld.
Super Metroid, however, was an absolutely amazing game. Beyond that, you can thank Super Metroid for the formula for pretty much every 2D Castlevania since Symphony of the Night along with a couple of great GBA Metroid Games.
So much gaming goodness from the Super Metroid formula, yet none of the clones have topped it yet.

I beat that old game for GB. It's decent, but there is SO much wandering around it's not funny. It's nice that the metroids mutate into bigger and bigger enemies, as well as the fact it introduced the spider ball

Yep. Until the 360 figures kick in from the price drop. Not to mention Halo in 4 weeks. I think the 360 will retake the lead, briefly before Nintendo settles into first.

I'd say a spike due to the price drop, but I think Halo will be more than a spike. Plus Nintendo still isn't ramping up production, so the best they seem to do every month is 350k-400k.
All rampant speculation of course.

I'd certainly anticipate the 360 to pick up with Halo, Bioshock and the holidays... of course the same can be said for the Wii ... I think they'll both be at around 14 million at the end of the yr.

The Japanese are not xenophobic, which is usually the response you'll get from Halo fanboys about the Xbox's lack of success over there.. but they do have their own likes and dislikes and the Xbox has thus far represented a whole effing lot of dislikes over there. I used to have an awesome article bookmarked about the whole Xbox in Japan thing from someone living there that had a whole slew of anecdotal evidence of American products and companies that were insanely popular over there and how they adjusted to the market to come to that success. I'll see if I can find it again.
