Super Metroid still gets my vote as one of the top 5 games of all time.

slop101 08-20-07 07:24 PM

I was gonna say top 5 of all 2-D games, but I think for me, that'd still be top 5 of all games, more or less.

Without a doubt. The music and sound is also amazing for the time. I played about 45 minutes tonight and really am glad to have this game finally on the VC. The sound emulation of the Virtual Console really lives up to the greatness of the soundtrack for Super Metroid.

The gameplay is solid as well. As much fun as the later GBA games were it is nice to return to Super Metroid again.

If I can just get to play Super Mario RPG again on the VC my purchase of a Wii will be fully justified.

Funny you used those as an example. I bought the Mega Man Collection for GC a couple of months back and once I started, some of my skills seemed to come back up from hiding. I rememberd patterns and tricks I once employed, etc. Many games these days are challenging, but not in the same controller-busting cheap way they were then.

tanman 08-20-07 11:20 PM

Super Metroid ties with Zelda LTP for greatest game of all time.

A must buy.

Played it for about an hour and man is it filled with nostalgic goodness.

argh923 08-20-07 11:56 PM

I think I'm the only one who never really liked Super Metroid all that much. It was good, but not great...I enjoyed the original Metroid much more.

My wife (along with everyone else) thinks I'm an idiot. :)

chess 08-21-07 06:52 AM

Super Fucking Metroid...finally something to make me stop playing RE4 every night.

Downloaded at about 4PM and played till I went to bed. Gamecube controller works better than I expected. I usually use the analog stick and only use the D pad to go into morph ball mode and to wall jump. Still might have to suck it up and get a Classic Controller.

cleverusername 08-21-07 09:08 AM

Super Metroid is brilliant. The timed escape sequence at the beginning with the screen tilting is totally cool and very panic inducing. The atmosphere is incredible. It is the only game I played through more than once, and I look forward to playing it again.

You can get them from buy.com for $19.99, free (slow) shipping with Google Checkout for $10 off. $9.99 for one card, but $19.99 for each extra. Not a great deal, but the best I can think of.

C-Mart 08-21-07 01:56 PM

Holy crap! Buy.com wants $6.18 to ship 1 little card!!! You would only save $3.83.

I was looking on eBay for point cards, and one guy had the Buy It Now price at $25. I emailed asking why I should buy his when I could go to any Wal-Mart and get one for $20... his response was "Because mine is oh so good." Weird.

pinata242 08-21-07 02:00 PM

Damn, I thought for sure they'd ship it free like the XBL subscription card they also sell. If that's the case, then screw Buy.com.

bahgee 08-21-07 02:19 PM

Can't you pay with a credit card to buy VC games?

pinata242 08-21-07 02:21 PM

Yes, without tax typically, but there are still slightly better deals to be had. It's all about minimizing the $/pt ratio.

Toad 08-21-07 02:48 PM

I have only played the original Metroid (I sucked at it).

Is it worth getting Super Metroid for a newb/lame Metroid player?

C-Mart 08-21-07 02:56 PM

I think the general concensus is that it is one of the best side-scrolling platform games in existence. If you like side-scrolling platform games, then I'm sure its worth the $8.

This kind of deals with the discusion we are having in the Metroid 3 thread. I have always had fun playing Super Metroid and the Castlevania games like it because they do a fairly decent job of putting the save points near major points in the game and major boss battles. You may die a lot, but you usually have a close save point and only have to replay small sections of the map when you die. In Super Metroid it is usually pretty easy to figure out the pattern the second or third time and get past the section. This game has one of the greatest final battles in gaming history and is worth it for that.

I really never got that into Super Metroid, but 9 out of 10 metroid players will say its the best one. The save spots were well located as well.

PixyJunket 08-21-07 03:26 PM

Super Metroid is probably the most well-designed 2D adventure ever. It is also probably the easiest Metroid game there is, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the save points, they're just there to let you stop playing for a bit.

spainlinx0 08-21-07 03:45 PM

I really loved Metroid for the Gameboy. How come no one ever brings that up? I must have beaten that thing like 3 times on that crappy green screen.

Would be so great if the month of Metroid ended with an 8/27 Wii update to add GB/GBC VC games with Metroid 2 headlining for 500 points. -pray-

I loved this game as well and played through all the Game Boy Metroids a few times. Had no problem with the green screen, but replayed it again on the Super Game Boy for the fun of it and some added color.

Outside of Super Metroid, Fusion is my favorite, but this one is a close third.

I like it. It's pretty linear but I think it portrays an freaking amazing sense of horror and isolation, which is quite an accomplishment given the hardware. The creepy music and the sudden appearance of a metroid in an empty corridor just shot your nerves up something fierce.

chess 08-21-07 09:21 PM

I tried to play Metroid 2 on emulator, and found it nigh unplayable...in spite of the fact that I generally love Metroid games. Perhaps it was just meant to be handheld.

Super Metroid, however, was an absolutely amazing game. Beyond that, you can thank Super Metroid for the formula for pretty much every 2D Castlevania since Symphony of the Night along with a couple of great GBA Metroid Games.

So much gaming goodness from the Super Metroid formula, yet none of the clones have topped it yet.

Absolutely agree. The creepy organ music adds so much to the feel. I always kept a save spot right before the final battle just so I could go back and play that section.

I never got into Metroid 2 on the original GB no matter how much I loved Metroid on NES. I would try it on VC though, and, may have to try it again emulated, etc.

KurrptSenate 08-22-07 02:45 PM

I beat that old game for GB. It's decent, but there is SO much wandering around it's not funny. It's nice that the metroids mutate into bigger and bigger enemies, as well as the fact it introduced the spider ball

VGchartz.com is reporting that the Wii has overtaken Xbox360 in worldwide sales:

Michael Corvin 08-22-07 11:49 PM

Yep. Until the 360 figures kick in from the price drop. Not to mention Halo in 4 weeks. I think the 360 will retake the lead, briefly before Nintendo settles into first.

The 360 will have a spike, but isn't the spike just going to match what the Wii is doing every week?

Michael Corvin 08-23-07 07:58 AM

I'd say a spike due to the price drop, but I think Halo will be more than a spike. Plus Nintendo still isn't ramping up production, so the best they seem to do every month is 350k-400k.

 All rampant speculation of course.

I'd certainly anticipate the 360 to pick up with Halo, Bioshock and the holidays... of course the same can be said for the Wii ... I think they'll both be at around 14 million at the end of the yr.

Amen. For the 360, I have a hard time paring down my budget to buy every game I would want. This would be a nice problem to have with the Wii.

To be fair, I'd probably be in the same boat with the Xbox 360 in the same timeframe of its life. I'm only enjoying a handful of its first-year games right now as I've been able to get a lot of them at $20 or less. I'm sure I'll be picking up a few early Wii titles later on once they get on the cheap.

What the fuck is Japan's problem with the 360? I thought they loved American things like Levis, Elvis, etc...

shumway 08-23-07 10:52 AM

They just don't think Americans are good at making videogames or videogame systems.

Honestly? Microsoft is the problem and not in that real internet nerd way where it's like "Micro$oft is a big evil corporation," but more in that they're not marketing the system to tastes of Japanese gamers. They like fantasy games, colorful graphics, RPGs, characters, etc. but MS still thinks that they can market ugly gun and sports games there and make a name for themselves. Hell, on the OG Xbox they at one point just stop translating games to Japanese and just released the English versions over there (true). Plus, apparently their marketing campaign for the 360 over there was so bad that it drove people away from the system.

The Japanese are not xenophobic, which is usually the response you'll get from Halo fanboys about the Xbox's lack of success over there.. but they do have their own likes and dislikes and the Xbox has thus far represented a whole effing lot of dislikes over there. I used to have an awesome article bookmarked about the whole Xbox in Japan thing from someone living there that had a whole slew of anecdotal evidence of American products and companies that were insanely popular over there and how they adjusted to the market to come to that success. I'll see if I can find it again.
