I might even go back to Etrian, which of course is another story.

You really have to have a different mindset playing Shiren. I'm such a power-gamer when it comes to RPGs and my natural instinct is to slaughter every monster and collect every treasure. That'll get you absolutely nowhere in a Mystery Dungeon game. It's a thinking game through and through, it's about surviving and resource management. Sometimes it's better to paralyze a monster and just leave it alone. Sometimes it's better to jump down the stairs then to find out what's in the rooms you haven't gone into yet. You have to really learn what each monster is capable of and save items for dealing with dire situations. But don't conserve TOO much. If you're surrounded by three weak monsters and can't make it to a corridor to take them on one by one, use that Scroll of Sleep.

If you come back to Shiren, I can offer tips for specific situations if you need it.

If you seriously still haven’t gotten enough of Guitar Hero, here’s a slightly shittier version of it that you can play ANYWHERE YOU WANT:

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of being chained to my television when I want to play Guitar Hero. The wireless controller was a nice attempt, but it still kept me stuck in my living room. I want complete and total freedom of movement when I rock out, you know? I’m sick of looking like a total fucking douchebag playing Guitar Hero in the privacy of my own home. If only there was a way that I could play Guitar Hero… IN PUBLIC! On the train, in the food court at the mall, in the office break room; If possible, I’d like to be able to look like a prick anywhere I go.

That used to be just a pipe dream, but come Summer 2008 that pipe dream will finally become a pipe reality!

And what better way to announce the coming Guitar Hero DS revolution than with what may possibly be the most instantly-dated commercial I’ve ever seen. Look at that guy and that girl. They are ready to ROCK! You can tell because they brought their Nintendo DS’s and copies of Guitar Hero onto that rooftop, and they’re totally rocking out in front of… what skyline is that? San Antonio, Texas? Yeah - they’re totally rocking out in front of the San Antonio skyline. If that isn’t enough to convince you that Guitar Hero DS is the premiere game of Summer 2008, then I don’t what will.

If I didn’t know the product was brand spankin’ new I would assume that this commercial was made in 1992. The only explanation I can come up with is that Guitar Hero DS is early 90s themed and features hits by Spin Doctors and Counting Crows. Oh well - at least it works on rooftops!

Thanks.

So i made it past a village where it said i couldn't return. Now I am ascending a mountain (i think the name of the level was 18 something). Am i heading to another village or am i on the last leg? Any idea how close i am to the Plains of the Sun?

ok, so stupid question. I bought a DS on Satruday, do I need to get a memory card? I was trying to save my game of sim city ,but it wouldn't save.

Baron Of Hell 04-07-08 02:18 PM

The DS doesn't take memory cards, so no.

No memory cards for the DS. It saves to the flash memory of the game card itself. So it sounds like your game is bugged.

Baron Of Hell 04-07-08 02:19 PM

Oh I don't have sim city but I know you can only have one game at a time. I believe it auto saves on exit.

Sounds like it is a bootleg.

House 04-07-08 02:47 PM

I bought it used from gamestop. I have a 30 day guarantee so i'll just take it back.

PixyJunket 04-07-08 03:46 PM

Final Fantasy IV = July.

Dragon Quest IV = :( ?

pinata242 04-07-08 04:08 PM

Didn't we just get FFIV for the GBA like 3 years ago?

Baron Of Hell 04-07-08 04:20 PM

In Shiren can you become a vampire or werewolf like in nethack

I guess this is with the 3d engine overhaul though. Anyway, colour me unexcited.

fujishig 04-08-08 02:07 PM

Damn you Pixy (and xmiyux). I broke a longstanding policy and actually bought a game at Gamestop yesterday, despite it being the "display copy" for full price. The game? Mystery Dungeon. All the talk that was just dominating the DS board finally took it's toll on me, despite the fact that I have a bazillion portable rpgs to go through already.

I actually panicked a little, when, while waiting in line, the employee told the family ahead of me that they were out of "Mystery Dungeon." Of course, he was only talking about the Pokemon version.

Only got to play a little of it so far, but as I missed the boat on Etrian, I figured I'd give it a go. I need a slight break from GBA Super Robot Taisen OG2 anyway (which reminds me, Yggdra Union is still sitting there unopened...).

Speaking of Etrian, should I torture myself even more and try to track down a copy of the game now, or just wait until the sequel comes out in a couple of months?

xmiyux 04-08-08 02:41 PM

I've even been quiet about it lately due to waiting for a rescue from Pixy.

I enjoyed Nethack on the PC but until Shiren i had never played a Rogue game on a portable. It seems custom built for this type game. You can play in bursts and there isn't really a story to bog you down. I <3 it and will probably keep an eye out for more like this in the future.

Etrian i had a love/hate relationship with. I enjoyed playing it. I enjoyed how hard it was. But the difficulty needed spread out over more levels. I would get to map a level and then spend hours and hours just grinding that level. I would have rather seen a more gradual progression so i was graphing more often.

PixyJunket 04-08-08 02:46 PM

I'm taking a "Shiren Break" after being mentally tortured by one of the bonus dungeons. I'd say it'd be worth getting a copy of Etrian if it interests you, shouldn't be too hard (yet). That one is more Wizardry then Rogue though. Although I think fans of one will embrace the other, to be honest.

I wonder if I should grab a copy of the new Pokémon game. The first one was definitely not as good as other Mystery Dungeon games as far as having a bite to it, but I think a lighter game would be a good companion to Shiren. On the other hand, obsessing with these games can't be good for my backlog.

xmiyux 04-08-08 02:48 PM

Pixy,
No Shiren break until i am rescued. :D

Also, you need to tell me how close i am to the end.

I'll take care of that tonight.. might be a good chance to test out my uber-items if you're in deep.

DEFINITELY made for portables, DEFINITELY made for the DS (using one screen as the constant map).

There's 30 floors. The game really turns the heat up once you get to Table Mountain (18F, I think).

I thought you were playing Izuna? How's that game?

Izuna is pretty crappy. It's horribly tedious and horribly uninteresting. I got close to the end pretty quickly and couldn't stand it anymore. The game is filled with boring monsters that only attack you, there are spells that aren't very powerful to begin with and your attack strength is tied to your MP, meaning casting spells makes your attacks weaker so the spells are almost entirely useless since there's so much hacking required with little chances to recover that missing MP. It does have an interesting system where you can stick the spells to your weapons to power them up, but again.. it seems to have little effect.

I'd say to pass on it if you've got Shiren. Shiren is a superior game in ever single aspect ten times over.

Canis Firebrand 04-08-08 08:36 PM

Shiren:

I added you as well Pixy and Miyu. I have just started in the game, but I am really having fun with it.

Anyone play Orcs and Elves?

Talking about Shiren yesterday was too much. I gave up on being rescued and started a new run. I couldn't help myself, the desire to play the game was too strong.

Yeah, thanks for that. I made the rescue and then it said I was too late.

I did rescue Lurker Gal after that though.

And it's much appreciated!!!! I think I'll start the game when I'm home and not during my commute. I seem to get screwed up alot when I do that.
